He should be a shoo-in, but he's not. The R&R HOF has yet to induct some music legends while bands like Green Day get in first-year-eligble. Don't get me wrong, I like Green Day, and I think they deserve to get into the HOF in maybe a decade. But what have they done except put out the same formula of pop/punk (really more power-pop), all of which is deriviative from other artists, many of which are NOT in the HOF.

The thing is that the writers that vote are of two classes, the 90's era and the 70's era. Now a band like CHICAGO will not get in because they lived to record in the dreaded 80's, these writers despise that era. Which is why if you are holding out for Duran or Depeche Mode or the Eurythmics, they are NEVER getting on that ballot, and i repeat NEVER. the only reason an 80's band like Bon Jovi got on the ballot is because Jon has $$$ and friends that are in like springsteen but jovi isnt getting in or at least not for the rest of the decade. HEART was in the same boat as CHICAGO, great 70's bands then had ballads in the 80's which those so called writers despised and that wrote HEART off, they got in because there really are no females in the hall (that rock).

As for Green Day they are in because they are the 90's, I mean pretty much them Nirvana, and soon Pearl Jam will be in with the other two, and then not far behind Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters easily.

As for D'angelo no, I mean not taking away from his work, but he is more famous for not recording and releasing work than for putting it out. I dont see him getting in or on the ballot, if he does it will be long past the 25 years needed to get on the ballot.

Considering that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke, yeah he will get in.

But if we can consider artists that have a meager output, then sooner or later the New Radicals will get in. Sure, they only put out one album but it was best album of an entire decade.

Give me a few minutes and I could probably come up with a page-length list of people who deserve the Hall of Fame before D'Angelo, but for now: 311, Alice In Chains, The B52s, Betty, Journey, Black Flag, Slayer, Iron Maiden, New Order, and Devo. Devo and Betty especially.

i dont know how this thought can be conjured up until the body of work gets deeper and his influence shows up in others...

Hmmm... Had a different response in my mind until I read your post. He certainly ushered in neo-soul, but what is it really except throwback music implementing the sound of days gone by? It's not the quality of his work, but the amount. Even the elsuive Bill Withers has a larger body of work. However, imo, his first three albums show such progression and uniqueness that he deserves it. When I hear "neo-soul", a lot of artists come to mind, but D'Angelo is the first. I know it'll rub a whole bunch of orgers all the way wrong, but perhaps this is also the reason the Revolution probably won't ever be admitted?

If he continues at this quality level, yes, but if he continues at this pace, no.

BINGO! I think D'angelo's talent and quality of albums spread over 20 years should make him eligible for induction but just not on first ballot. Beck has a better chance of getting inducted into the Hall Of Fame because his succession of albums and experiental reinventions of his sound and aesthetic will impress the gatekeepers. I support quality control but D is so self-conscious that it holds him back in some ways. As far as who will induct him if he makes it, Questlove will do a 10 hour induction speech that'll end far after the janitor turns off the lights and go home.
