I don't think Sugah Daddy is that great, tbh. He needed to come back stronger than this.

Musically it's good but his vocals are all over the place, there's no clarity in the vocal production, and I've listened to the song three times now and the vocals just aren't memorable at all.

I'm glad he's back though and I'm sure I'll like a few cuts from the album.

lol .... unbelievable

Sugah Daddy is good but I think it sounds better live. Good song but great live.

D'angelo has different concepts for his albums than most others. He cares more about the album as a whole than singles. That's why his songs as standalone tracks doesn't sound like instant classics, but rather work as a fantastic piece that glues together a fantastic album. Voodoo had maybe a few standalone tracks, but it was always the total package that made it truly GREAT. D'angelo is one of few that really knows the album concept, and does an album instead of a hit parade.

Ok...

  1. it's new and official.... so applauds
  2. it has a similar complex multi layered feel as voodoo... thumbs up
  3. vocals are a buried as usual and camille like at times
  4. bass is Pino.. although I wish they would clear up his mix a little bit.. he loves that thumb pluck don't change your strings dub sound that doesn't always come out the cleanest
  5. song didn't really go to many places traditionally like bridge and chorus
  6. sounds like chicken grease part 2 meets camille in a back alley
  7. like the claps and rhythm track
  8. horns are classic voodoo
  9. like the guitar

fck it so far so good... 8/10

trying to remember how for 14 yrs and 2 canceled concerts how bad I begged for this guy to do something. so welcome back D... best of luck . thank u for the music

Having seen him perform the track live back in 2012 and having obviously watched videos online since I wasn't blown away by Sugar Daddy...But this is better than I was expecting.. The multi-tracked vocals and that FAT sub kick-drum laying underneath the rhythm track make it for me.

It does remind me of Chicken Grease (which is probably my least fave track from Voodoo) but thats no bad thing..its still funky as sh*t. Just to have a new and official release from him is a bit surreal.

Roll on the Album + Tour next year.

Holy hell this song is great! The plus Charade, Ain't That Easy, 1000 Deaths, Really Love = MASTERPIECE. Prince better put himself back in that freezer for another 45 years.

The vocal arrangement is sick. I wish Prince could still sound dirty like that.

I think it's much better than the first two singles from Voodoo. I think it's pretty basic but good. He's playing it safe.

Sugah Daddy is just okay. Nothing spectacular. This is the same song he did on one of
them awards shows and started all that screaming. Even Nikki Minaj was looking
like WTF lol I hope he has some better tracks than this on the album. Meanwhile I'll just get my popcorn and watch the Prince vs DAngelo shitstorm that's brewing in this thread. lol

He's performed it quite a few times since then, actually. And I don't see any shitstorm brewing? It's entirely possible to enjoy both their music and just go about our ways like civil people. Let's just carry on enjoying this moment and not try to fan any flames by 'refuting' opinions like the one KCOOLMUSIQ posted.

As for the single, I'm loving it. Can't wait for the rest! music

Before we begin this musical journey.

Can we agree not to make the usual mistakes.. I too was guilty back in back 2000 (voodoo) of saying Prince should be doing this etc.

Prince is Prince we can't change that, and D is D.

Let's stay focused on the album so that we don't have a pissing war.

I am excited as hell, but keeping my guard up until I hear it all. The live versions have me very curious and I like them.

While I agree that folks can enjoy both artists I disagree with you insinuating
I'm fanning flames. I could honestly care less. It was just humor on my part. I also don't recall responding to anything KCool stated in this thread so I don't know where you were going with that. Anyways I'm getting ready for Sunday football so anything DAngelo is not a priority for me right now. wink

D'angelo's vocal layering is so reminiscent of prince's till it's scary! He has learned from the best. I'm sure prince is very honored by it. I mean U can tell he studied them 4 years & perfected them perfectly. 'D'angelo comes the closest to prince's vocal layering, than any artist besides Bilal, than I ever heard. prince has influenced him so well..

Just to play the 'annoying Funk Devil's advocate' for a moment..

Funk for Funk's sake,

Is something that i and i assume many of us Prince supporters

fully endorse-

But-

Is there a strong enough Chorus/Hook to this song for the average radio listener?
