Great list Fred12, and I can't argue with your choices! Going beyond your ten, I would include Ike and Tina Turner, the Gap Band, Roy Ayers (if you count him as a band), Rufus & Chaka Khan, Boney M, and Brass Construction. It's hard not to mention or include some of the bands/groups now considered mostly disco or pop, but some had R&B/Funk at heart: KC & the Sunshine Band, Average White Band, and groups like Klymaxx and the Time.

You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I can't envision any list without James Brown.
-Gap Band -P-Funk -Cameo -Zapp/Roger -Stevie -Isley Bros. -Curtis Mayfield -Marvin Gaye -James Brown -Sly & The Family Some may question some of those artists, but I guess it depends on how you define funk as well. Future Shock, Freddie's Dead, etc by Curtis are definitely funk to me, as are some songs others may consider disco, like Got To Give It Up by Marvin. [Edited 12/10/14 22:04pm]

But the OP put R&B, not just funk. I think Marvin & Stevie would pretty much fall under Funk Brothers, at least their records up to the early 1970s and they're solo acts not a band. yeah, I was just asking cause I know Jamiroquai is one of SoulAlives all time fave artits so I was surprised not to spot them on the list
I fully agree for Jamiroquai though, I adore their first few albums, and I still own and will continue to buy all their CDs, but over the years their albums became more and more generic and somewhat patchy and inconsistent, at least to my ears [Edited 12/12/14 0:01am] Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green.
