Anyway, pretty much every time I've seen her sing live, she struggles. She has never been able to replicate her studio versions live.

In her prime yes she absolutely could replicate her studio versions and sing them even better. Anyway yea she's been singing for 20+ years, her chords are damaged but she really doesn't need to prove anything to anyone at this point. One of the greatest voices of our time.

Guess, I've just never seen those performances. Only ones I've seen have her pulling away from the mic because she's not making the note.

Most people just enjoy listening to a good performance. You can't blame anyone for not being interested in hearing a singer have at it with damaged vocal chords - no matter how good they used to be.

Oh I agree with that lol, not blaming anyone for anything I didn't enjoy her performance either. It's more of an advice to her, she can retire. At least at singing live or work on the damaged chords so she can give decent performances.

True. No, you can't and if singers are going to put themselves out there like that... than they have to take the boos when their performance is subpar.

Tell me, what does knowing her personally or not have to do with anything? People commented on her performance, which was terrible. Stating the fact is not an attempt to break her down.

Your post is weird.

No, not "weird." Purely an observation and testament to the fact that so many today "hate." If you knew her personally, would u be so brash and so insulting? That's all I'm sayin'. That's the problem today with society. Rather than build someone up and support them, most take delight in breaking someone down. We all ARE human afterall and 'tis human to err. She had a bad night. She's still amply talented and a very g;ifted vocalist in spite of the fact that she gave a less than par performance, but who cares? The fans seemed 2 have been enjoying themselves.

If I knew her personally (and liked her--if I knew her personally and didn't, I might take a different tack), I'd say, as someone else did earlier, that she doesn't have anything to prove, but, Mimi, your voice is shot. Don't go out there if you can't sing THE WAY YOU"RE SUPPOSED TO SING. I'd also tell her, despite her tweet to the contrary, that a bad performance that's bad BECAUSE HER VOICE IS SHOT is most certainly "in her control," since she doesn't have to do the performance. BUT (and this is a big point)--if you are going to perform live EVER AGAIN, you have to stop pre-taping or lip-syncing so many of your performances, because it only points up how shot your voice is when you actually do sing live (and a live performance to your own backing track counts as lip-syncing, if the backing track's going to be more prominent). If it's something she can fix, I'd encourage her to fix it, or learn to sing successfully with her new voice; if she can't do either of those two things, cut back lifestyle-wise, work out some new revenue streams, and retire from performance (if she can still cobble together studio performances, and still wants to, go for it).

.

Anything else would be wrong, if I cared about her personally. Whether the fans like it or not, she clearly doesn't enjoy it, says herself that many of these performances are subpar (in "apologies" like the one she tweeted after this one), and, quite honestly, doesn't seem to have any artistic interest in what she's doing. So why do it, and why, if you know her, encourage her to continue doing it?

the problem for Mariah is...she is known as one of the greatest voices of the last 24 years. She set high standards for herself. So when she has a sub-par performance, people freak out. It's one thing for singers to lose the power of their voice as they age,but Mariah isn't even "old" yet. She's not in her 60s.She should have another decade or so of powerful vocal performances. As I mentioned before,I don't think it's drugs or alcohol.I think it's a case of not taking care of her instrument.A few sessions with a voice coach might be able to fix things.

When this story broke Radio Personality Joe Pags decided to air Mariah's Live singing of "All I want for Christmas"..He edited out the music and let his radio listeners hear her vocals....Mariah sound Good and even on a cold day she's a better vocalist than those that came after her. I was shocked listening to her vocals cuz I was expecting 100% Whispering. She didnt hit the High notes but she really sound Good...You have to hear the perfeomance without the music to judge her vocals....

I don't understand why this performance (of all) is spreading through the media. She's given MUCH WORSE performances. One commenter said she dodged the whistles. Umm, this song doesn't have any whistles.

Besides, Mariah's vocal during this performance is better than any artist currently being played on Top 40.

Instead, they should be dragging her for the contouring on her double chin. Good lord, did Coco Montrese do her makeup??

She did sound dry though!! I'm a lamb but I tell it like it is.

Absolutely not true. lol

Anyway, pretty much every time I've seen her sing live, she struggles. She has never been able to replicate her studio versions live.

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know who on earth are these people on the Top 40 charts that sounded better than Mariah even on this performance??? I seriously have no clue who on earth you could be talking about. The charts are absolutely atrocious these days. Enlighten me, please.

Artists on the Top 40 for this week that sing live waaaaaaay better than her tree lighting performance:

Sam Smith

Jessie J

Hozier

Beyonce

Bruno Mars

Sia
Ariana Grande

Man, even Ed Sheeran, Fall Out Boy, Nick Jonas and Maroon 5 sing better live than she did in this performance.

Oh yeah, as for her not being able to replicate her studio vocals live. That's a flat-out lie. She sang better than her studio vocals back in the '90s. Look at any of her hundreds of performances from 1990-1997. Those performances kill every last one of those artists you mentioned.

Seriously, one bad performance and everybody is ready to lynch this woman. I guess having the greatest voice in the world at one point will cause everybody to call out every little mistake you make. SMH. Keep listening to that trash you listen to though. Your ears are the ones that are being assaulted, not mine.

Ok, I'm gonna take it easy on you because it's now apparent that you're one of those creepy emotionally-tied-to-an-artist type fanatics.

Everyone one of those artists sing better live than this performance - which is what you claimed none of them can do. You're wrong, but your Mariah kool-aid drunkness will never allow you to admit this. I understand, it's out of your control.

There is no doubt that at one point Mariah was an excellent singer who sang very well live, but it's simply not true that she sings better than her studio recordings...but I guess to someone that has no musical background or experience with studio work might be ignorant to this fact. That's cool, if that's you...again I understand, it's out of your control.

As for the artists I mentioned above, I'm not actively listening to any of them but I have seen every single one of them sing live and unlike you, I can see things for what they are because I'm not in a fanatical haze that so many people seem to be in when it comes to artists they obsess over. I can still see talent even though I may not appreciate the music.

Mariah is a talented singer who at one point was at the top of her game...those days, sadly appear to be gone.

This performance was shit.

Now, I'll wait for your "don't flatter yourself" (weirdest thing to say) type emotionally charged reply full of LOLs. Gives me a good laugh.

Okay, listen [Flame/name calling snip - luv4u] what YOU think. I could give you a list of hundreds of performances anywhere from 1990-1997, 2001-04 and 2005 that are BETTER than her recorded studio versions of songs. Whether YOU think they are or not is irrelevant because frankly your opinion doesn't really matter because at the end of the day it's an opinion, NOT a fact.

"I'll take it easy on you"

[Name calling snip - luv4u], I'm not one of those people who gets their feelings hurt easily especially over the internet so you can save your little "take it easy on you" lectures.

[Snip - luv4u]

Rotterdam, Paris, Tokyo Dome 1996 Daydream Tour Performances

Arsenio Hall Performances from 1990-93 (look them up)

“If It’s Over” live at the Grammy Awards, 1992.
“Love Takes Time” at the NBC Thankgiving Special, 1993
”We Belong Together”/”Fly Like A Bird” at the 2006 Grammy Awards
”Emotions” live in 1991
”Joy To The World” live in 1994
”Joy To The World” live in 1994, and then in 2004
”Vision Of Love” live at the 1991 Grammy Awards
”Hero” live at Tokyo Dome, 1996
”My Saving Grace” on Oprah, 2002
”Open Arms” live in Madison Square Gardens, 1995
”Forever” live in MSG, 1995
”Without You” live in 1993 (NBC Special)
Very rare live performance of “Vanishing” from 1990 (audio only)
”Anytime You Need A Friend” live on the David Letterman show, 1994
”My All/”Stay Awhile” at the Lady Of Soul Awards 1998
”My All” at Pavarotti and Friends. 1999 (Fantastic Quality)
”Hero” performed by Mariah and Pavarotti in 1999 (Fantastic Quality)
”I Still Believe” on the Letterman show, 1999

”We Belong Together” live on Letterman, 2005
”Anytime You Need A Friend” live on Wetten Dass, 1994
”Can’t Let Go” live on Top Of The Pops, 1992
Singing “I Still Believe” and “Hero” in 1999 at Michael Jackson and Friends
”My All” on Saturday Night Live, 1997
”Butterfly” live on Saturday Night Live, 1997
”Honey” live at the American Music Awards, 1998
”Without You” live on Top Of The Pops
Tokyo Dome Compilation – 1996
Tokyo Dome Compilation – 1998

Any performance from 1990-1992 (including her MTV Unplugged show)

BET performances from 2001-02

^That's just a tip of the iceberg and it's fine if YOU don't like them, but to say that she's just a studio singer is a LIE and frankly almost all of her live performances in the '90s were better than her studio versions. Just because YOU say they aren't doesn't mean shit!

I really don't care if you report me and I get banned because at least I got my point across.

And last thing, those performances of hers are enough to blow away anything those people you listed previously have ever done and will ever do in their lifetime.

I apologize, I've just had enough of people on the internet and in the media and everywhere absolutely just going in at this woman's throat. I am SICK to DEATH of hearing it. This woman gives a couple bad performances and people want her to retire and to kill herself. It is utterly ridiculous. I'm usually not like this. I've just gotten fed up and I'm tired of arguing with people over the internet over someone's dumb, irrelevant opinion. If we were dealing with facts, I wouldn't be so hostile, but I've taken all I can take and I absolutely am through with people and their opinions. First, I'm arguing with people over on YouTube and now I come to Prince.org and now I've got to prove my points (subjective or not) with ignoramuses here. I'm just so over it and frankly, I don't care what anyone has to say about anyone anymore. Let's just listen to what we listen to and be happy. I'm sick of the arguing and I'm sick of the fighting.
