2014 Soul Train Awards Thread I guess I'll start this thread for the Soul Train Awards of 2014. Honestly, I don't like Wendy Williams, but I'll watch it for the performances. Who else is gonna watch?

I'm watching now, but will have to turn at 9pm to watch The Walking Dead mid-season finale....otherwise, I'm DVR'ing the Soul Train Music Awards. Chris Brown's opening performance was just okay to me. He didn't do anything spectacular...and Wendy Williams' entrance was just okay too. Don't know why but she seems like an odd host to me. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The 2014 S.T. Awards Show lived up to its history of A on the Awards Show report card standards. If you have not seen it yet, you be glad you did if you catch a rebroadcast and the first rebroadast is probably later this week. BET and the S.T. Awards Team deserve a lot credit for the amount of creative effort they put together to make the 2014 show as muscially potent, sexy (in a VERY GOOD PG type of way, even above their normally very sexy standards and that is particularly valid for the female participants), educational, classy, majestically large scale, agressively smart and high tech. The 2014 edition, as always, slickly (in a good way) mixes and unifies the multiple generations of R&B and Rap together to honor and celebrate each generation and a few of the top ladies and gentlemen performers in each generation. The celebration of Kool and the Gang included several present generation R&B males as the lead vocalist on covers of the bands' songs and there was also a classic S.T. Awards Show highlight, in my mind, tribute from the female all star team of Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Da Brat, and more. Rapper Mase also did his tribute song. Questlove's introduced and explained the incredible breadth and amount of Kool and Gang songs that were sampled in subsequent songs. This is another can't miss solid, classic treat that any enthusiastic R&B and\or rap fan should enjoy. Excellent performance to represent the 1990s by Jodeci. For the people that enjoy this type of stuff, you have got to see the woman in the green dress that is shown as Jodeci sings "Stay". There were plenty of other very sexy women (Elle Varner, Mc Lyte, Wendy, several in the audience, Michelle Williams, and more) who were balanced out by the male presenters and performers and, probably to match the level of several of these women, around 30 seconds from the Chippendales. The annual musical obituary from 3WB was quite an elegant and effective way to honor recent those who recently passed away. Stephanie Mills demonstrated her virtuouso, soulful vocal skills with a performance that hinted at her success on the charts in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Chris Brown was his studly dancin' and singin' virtuoso self. Excellent performance from him towards the start of the show.
Kem and Ledisi's emphais on love was a key reminder of that particularly potent facet of R&B music, whether it is a ballad or an uptempo song. Wendy Williams looked good and contributed her charm and hostess skills but was not as much a featured hostess as past hosts such as Cedric and Anthony Anderson. Doug E Fresh did perhaps his best TV awards performance of his career as he literally supervised, MC style, each and every second of the finale to the show in quite an on-the-beat yet impromptu, it seemed, freestyle delivery. And there was plenty of excellent stuff additional to all of this.

So I basically fast forwarded through the bulk of it while looking at it in it's entirety when I got home this evening. By far the weakest Soul Train Music Awards show ever.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I felt the same way. It wasn''t bad, but the Soul Train Awards have been so great over the past few years- I kinda felt like it was a bit weak. And I had hard time enjoying the Jodeci set too. Maybe if they would pre-recorded the vocals, I don't know. But singing straight from the cd bothered me.

I am not sure why this award show is seen as the B list award show. Back in the 90's MJ, Janet, Whitney etc went to the Soul Train awards, hell and even performed. The Soul Train awards was poppin back in the day. I do appreciate the fact that the show does try to give the R&B soul singers some shine. I just wish they would give them more awards and nominations. The nominations are still screwed up. I missed Jodeci.I'll catch it on the net.

Do you mean as far as the A-list music artists not bothering to show up for it, or in the view of the public? I agree with you that in the past, it was definitely a MUST SEE event. Now it's fallen to a D-level type of event. It's not even exciting anymore. When they brought it back a few years ago, it started off pretty strong...especially when you could see the effort being put in to highlight some of the R&B acts of the past and have them perform...but now, it's gone down again. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Agree 1000%. There's something up with the whole lip synching straight from the album. Perhaps some members where MIA during rehearsal and it was a last minute management decision. They didn't even have any chemistry on stage together. In fact, I could sense some tension between them on stage. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I mean as far as the A-list black music artists showing up. I think it is a slap in the face of the legacy of the show and just shows that the current black acts really don't support one another. Even in the 90's they had B-list, C- list, and even D list acts with MJ, Whitney, Mariah, Janet etc on stage and at the show. MJ didn'tsay I am to good to perform on the bill with the likes of Mint Condition or Keith Sweat People can say what they want but they came out and supported those black R&B/Soul award shows (and they did not have too because by that time they were more "Pop"). I think the same thing could be done now but this is a different generation of black artists who don't really care about supporting their own. These current black A-list acts think they are to "popular" for the show. I just wish Soul Train would stop nominating these acts that never show up to their show. They need to start giving awards to Janelle Monae,Melanie Fiona Anthony Hamilton, etc (Acts that actually represent Soul music and who come out to support the show). I am just tired of the bullshit
It was nice to see Jodeci but they were miming...to the C.D.
