I remember buying the cassette single of this when it came out. I thought it was the coolest song I'd ever heard.

Your in the UK right? i think it was this & Firestarter that went number 1. Pretty crazy! a song like this would never go number 1 in the states lol

Yeah, I am! I recall hearing Breathe first though because I think Firestarter was banned on radio and I didn't have cable TV to see the music videos. Breathe was played a LOT on radio and I loved it from the moment I heard it. Firestarter was banned as they thought it promoted arson, and obviously Smack My Bitch Up was not played on radio either.

A popular BBC host over here actually compared my performance style to Keith from The Prodigy, so I guess they had a lasting impact on me lol lol

Fat of The Land truly is a fantastic album.

That is a good comparison smile i can see how that would leave an impression.

The UK has had some silly dance songs. But y'all honestly rock in terms of pop charts. Y'all let some real crazy artists have huge hits in the UK. Bjork & The Prodigy actually had top 10 hits there. And they let Pet Shop Boys & Depeche Mode have hits for decades. Another smart move lol

It's funny that you mention all those bands.

See, before becoming a teenager (which is when I think most people start getting into specific genres), you tend to just buy/listen to the stuff that really stands out to you, rather than stuff that comes from a specific genre.

And aside from the Pet Shop Boys, all those acts you mentioned had songs that I bought the singles of when I was a kid and left an impact on me at a young age.

With Bjork, it was "Possibly Maybe". I still remember the first time I heard it and I thought it was one of the strangest things I'd ever heard. But I loved it, I just wanted to listen to it over and over because it was so ethereal and dream like.

Prodigy as I mentioned was "Breathe" for me, the song that got me into them.

Depeche Mode, I remember watching a music videos TV show on cable at a friends house, and the new single that just come out was "It's No Good". I loved it immediately, the pounding electronic beat, and Dave's low vocals were a new style to me at that age. I bought the CD single for that as I had just gotten my first CD player. It had a cream and black cover, and the B-Side was "Barrel of A Gun". I wore that CD out!

I do remember the first Pet Shop Boys song I heard. It was a song called "Se A Vida E (That's the way life is)". It had a black and white video. I didn't like it then, and I don't much care for it now. It wasn't until a few years later when I heard "West End Girls" that I realized they had some good songs.
