Bruno Mars: The Downest Dude on the Planet

Posted: 12/23/2014 11:56 am EST

2014-12-21-panoramamarsmuddy.jpg

Mars gets both his sound and his style from early funk/soul/blues artists

The curlers convinced me. Bruno Mars has to be the downest dude on the planet right now.

"Uptown Funk," a soul celebration co-written by Mars, is suddenly blasting in the background of every movie trailer and sports event I see on TV. His Saturday Night Live performance of same was one of the best I've seen on SNL not just recently, but...ever.

But the gold curlers he wore on the season finale of The Voice -- which will be remembered far longer than the winner as many critics noted -- sealed the deal for me. It was as much a cultural statement as a fashion one. Which many critics didn't get.

Neither did many viewers. People Magazine site comments the next day ranged from "He looks like an idiot" and "I don't get it Bruno." Though a couple fought back with "He should be People's Sexiest Man Alive! Wow!" and "As for the curlers, ingenious."

I don't think lots of people truly appreciate Mars. Yes, he's a cutie pie with a talent for hot hooks. I mean, he truly is "Smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy," just one of the many lines in "Uptown Funk," that make fans love and laugh with him.

But he also has a deep knowledge of and undying love for the sounds and styles of Old School funk. Those curlers were no surprise to those of us who remember the "conked" hair sported by black musicians like James Brown, Little Richard and Muddy Waters, pictured with Mars above.

So when a Mars fan on YouTube asked about the "crazy thing he does with his feet," not long before the James Brown bio pic Get On Up hit the big screen, I felt a bit sad. Knowing exactly what he's doing and why he does it electrifies that moment.

When I saw Mars live, that moment and many more took me back to the big R & B stage shows of my youth. He also reminds me of the veteran musicians on Dave Grohl's Sonic Highways who urged young music lovers to go back to the "roots" of the music, not just as an intellectual exercise but as a way of deepening their listening experiences, no matter what genres or eras they prefer.

You don't have to know the history of funk to feel it. But knowing where he gets all that funky stuff -- and those crazy legs -- makes it a whole lot funkier. And more fun.

And Mars is fun. You can see he's having the time of his life and wants you to feel the same. But the funk beneath the fun is no joke.

A famous Zap Comix cartoon says if you don't know what "diddy wah diddy" means, "don't mess with it." Mars probably knows that and much more. And can mess with it all he wants.

Bruno Mars Scores $1 Million Payday for New Year's Eve Gig

Why do artists like to work on New Year's Eve, rather than stay home with friends and family? Cash, that's why. Just take Bruno Mars, for example. He'll be scoring a $1 million paycheck for his gig on December 31.

Las Vegas hotel and casino magnate Steve Wynn confirms to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he's paying Bruno a million bucks to perform a private New Year's gig for 2,000 of his closest friends and most valuable casino guests. He tells the paper, "Bruno Mars is a music man. He is a gifted songwriter, a fabulous dancer and an amazing singer. He’s probably the pick of the litter of the young male pop stars."

He's sure come a long way. Sean Christie, who runs one of Wynn's nightclubs, tells the paper that when Bruno first performed at a Wynn property four years ago, he had no idea who the singer was, and paid him just 5,000 bucks for his trouble.

All in all, it's been a pretty good year for Bruno, who started off 2014 headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, and then progressed to headlining a sold-out tour. In addition, he's currently got a top 3 hit with "Uptown Funk," his collaboration with his producer, Mark Ronson.

MARS ROCKETS TO FAME

Bruno Mars is putting an exclamation mark on a breakout year.

After starting 2014 with a career-changing halftime performance in the Super Bowl, Mars is getting a cool $1 million to perform in front of 2,000 of Steve Wynn’s friends and best guests.

Wynn confirmed the $1 million deal on Tuesday during a phone interview.

“Bruno Mars is a music man,” Wynn said. “He is a gifted songwriter, a fabulous dancer and an amazing singer. He’s probably the pick of the litter of the young male pop stars.”

Four years ago he was on the cusp of fame and fortune.

Sean Christie, who runs Wynn’s Surrender nightclub and pool venue, had to ask who he was when his bookers brought in Mars.

“We had opened four months earlier, and it was a nondescript Wednesday for industry night,” Christie said.

Katy Perry’s boyfriend, Travie McCoy, was booked to sing “Billionaire,” which featured guest vocals by Mars, then 24.

Christie was on hand for the first dress rehearsal.

“Instead of singing the line, ‘I want to be a billionaire so (effing) bad,’ Bruno sang ‘I want to be a billionaire so (effing) bad, just like Steve Wynn.’

“We paid him $5,000,” Christie said.

Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars Top Digital Sales Chart

"Uptown Funk!" by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars jumps to #1 in its sixth week on Digital Songs, with sales of 288K. Mars has landed at least one #1 song on the digital sales chart every year since 2010. Mars and Katy Perry are the only artists who can make that claim.

"Uptown Funk!" is Mars’s seventh #1 on Digital Songs, which originated in October 2004. He’s one of only six artists to amass that many #1s.Rihanna leads the pack with 13 #1 digital hits, followed by Perry (10),Eminem and Taylor Swift (nine each), and Britney Spears (also with seven).

This marks the first time in five months that a male artist has topped the digital sales chart — as a lead or featured artist. The last time was in the week ending July 27, when Jason Aldean's “Burnin' It Down” debuted at #1.

On the Hot 100, the Ronson/Mars smash holds at #3 for the second week in its sixth week. (Note: This is Nielsen SoundScan’s week ending Dec. 21, which means there is still one week left in the Nielsen SoundScan chart year. This week corresponds with Billboard's week of Jan. 3, which makes it Billboard's first chart week of 2015.)

Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk breaks all-time streaming record!

Uptown Funk becomes the first track ever to clock up 2 million streams in a week in the UK!

He may have missed out on the Christm...er 1 crown, but super producer and musician Mark Ronson today makes chart history all of his own as the infectious Uptown Funk, featuring Bruno Mars on vocals, becomes the first track ever in the UK to rack up over 2 million audio streams in a week.

Rewind to spring 2013 when Daft Punk became the first act to hit 1 million streams of a track in a week with their then monster chart smash of the year, Get Lucky featuring Pharrell Williams. With the continued explosion of the UK streaming market, a further slew of tracks have managed the 1 million streams in a week feat since, including the likes ofAriana Grande FT Iggy Azalea’s Problem, George Ezra’s Budapest, Taylor Swift’ Shake It Off and Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass, to name just a few. However, no artist before today has managed to break the 2 million streams mark in a week.

The Official Charts Company announced this summer that from July 2014 streaming data from audio streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer, O2 Tracks, Xbox Music and more were to count towards the Official Singles Chart for the first time. And so for the first time in Christmas Number 1 race history, it’s not just what the UK has been buying and downloading this week that counts, but what you, the British public, have been listening to during the Christmas festivities too.

No doubt the soundtrack to many a Christmas party this week, former Number 1 Ronson’s Uptown Funk which was rush-released last week following the runaway success of X Factor contestant Fleur East’s performance of the track, has racked up a staggering 2.34 million streams in the past seven days, and finishes the Christmas Number 1 race in second place. In doing so, Ronson overtakes previous record holder Ed Sheeran who notched up a cool 1.72 million streams of Thinking Out Loud in November of this year, and has even managed a personal best of his own this week with a whopping 1.85 million streams. Nice one, Ed!

A further five tracks have crossed the million streams in a week barrier this week - Hozier’s Take Me To Church (1.1m), Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You (1.1m), Olly Murs’ Wrapped Up FT Travie McCoy (1.1m), Calvin Harris’ Outside FT Ellie Goulding (1m) and One Direction’s Steal My Girl (1m).

But a big congratulations to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk has certainly given it to the UK this Christmas. HOT DAMN!

Bruno Mars Buys Big Studio City Estate

Bruno Mars Buys Estate

BUYER:
Bruno Mars
LOCATION: Studio City, Calif.
PRICE: $6,500,000
SIZE: 9,033 square feet, 7 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Thanks to an entirely unexpected but certainly most welcomed Christmas Day communique from tireless real estate yenta Yolanda Yakketyyak, Your Mama learned that wildly popular singer-songwriter-choreographer and budding voice actor Bruno Mars recently made an under-the-radar, $6.5 million acquisition — via an opaque corporate entity — of a private, multi-acre estate in a discreet gated enclave in the heavily celebrified Fryman Canyon area of Studio City, Calif.

The famously fancy-footed, two-time Grammy winner purchased the property, as per public records, from Elvira Kudryashova, a young gal otherwise known as the daughter of immensely rich and allegedly shady Kazakh oligarch Viktor Khrapunov. Miz Kudryashova, who apparently goes by at least a couple other names, purchased the property, along with a man who we’ll just assume without any direct knowledge is or was her husband, in July 2013 for $5.7 million and flipped it back on the market just eight months later with an optimistic asking price of $7.787 million.

A long, hedge-lined and tree-shaded driveway leads up from the gated cul-de-sac to a roomy motor court and a front-facing, three-bay garage that will shelter six cars, per digital marketing materials. A double-height rotunda entry links to generous formal living and dining rooms done up for the seller by and unnamed “European interior designer” with a brazen and unrestrained thing for jewel-toned furnishings and intricately patterned wallpaper set off against intricately patterned rugs and intricately patterned window treatments. It’s really quite something, ain’t it, kids?

Anyhoodles, poodles, the sprawling manse also includes a wood-paneled office, a spacious family room with muscular coffered ceiling treatment and built-in bar; a temperature controlled wine room; and a center-island kitchen and an adjoining breakfast room lined with a curving wall of glass doors that open to the poolside entertainment areas.

A discrete guest wing has four en suite bedrooms, according to the listing description, and a separate a children’s wing offers two more en suite bedrooms plus a children’s family room and kitchenette. The sizable master suite is complete with a fireplace regrettably set a sad, cock-eyed angle just a little too close to the bed for this property gossip’s personal taste, as well as a private office/sitting room, a kitchenette/coffee bar, dual walk-in closets and a pair of bathrooms decked out with both steam and dry saunas.

The backyard has over the shrubbery and roof top views over the San Fernando Valley and resort-style amenities that include an infinity-edged swimming pool and spa, a built-in grill station and outdoor kitchen, and children’s playground, and an open-air cabana with stone fireplace and built-in heaters.

Fryman Canyon, at the northern mouth of Laurel Canyon, has long been a draw to a slew of Tinseltowners such as George Clooney, Teri Hatcher, Alex Trebek and “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen; other residents of Mister Mars’ itty-bitty gated enclave include sitcom veteran and famous ex-Scientologist Leah Remini and film and television soundtrack guru Kathy Nelson.

Our research shows Mister Mars continues to own a 4,000-square-foot-plus, modern-minded quasi-Hollywood Regency-style residence above Laurel Canyon that he scooped up over the summer of 2012 for $3.254 million. Mister Mars also continues to own a 4,300-square-foot-plus home in the affluent eastern suburbs of Honolulu that he bought from the heir to a firearms fortune in early 2012 for $3.1 million and, coincidentally enough, had listed on the open market late in 2013 and for a good part of this year, first at $3.5 million and later at $3.35 million.
