i dont agree with mariah for 1997 either, her album may have been huge but lauryn hill's presence was clearly bigger. i know mariah was extremely successful commercially but i just dont remember her really dominating the scene at any period. i dont remember her ever being THAT CHICK, the one every girl wanted to be, her face on all the magazines, dominating award shows,ect.

She was big from late 95 to mid 96 rather than all of 1996, I guess Toni Braxton filled the second half well.

In 1997, it was quiet for divas but she broke records when she dropped Honey and the singles kept coming though there were no commercial releases. Janet did put out Velvet Rope and Madonna put out Evita, but Janet had a slow start until things picked up with Together Again, and Evita was a soundtrack that sold well but took awhile to do so.

I agree Miseducation was released end of summer 1998, but Brandy was also hard to get away from. Music, movies, tv, she was everywhere.

I thought 'Loose' wasn't as big in the US as Canada, but it's definitely one of the best albums of 2006 and very underrated.

They probably mean LIVING black artist. And not to discredit her if it's true, but I would find it more believable if her and Jay'z annual earnings makes them highest paid, I don't know about individually though she's done well the past few years, and it's not coming to me who else besides Rihanna would make a candidate.

Living, I would find it more believable but for some reason I doubt that's what they meant to say.

I know Rihanna had quite a string of #1 hits from 2010-2012 but I wouldn't consider her one of the highest paid black artists.

I was disputing the "highly rated" part about the HBO Special not the tour itself. The viewership ratings weren't high.

Adele owned the industry during her, "21" era.

Madonna earned over 150 million dollars in 2012 and Beyonce was down the list. Beyonce made the most money this year and she did not even make as much as Madonna in 2012. Ya'll need to stop feeding into her PR hype. There is no way Beyonce is the highest paid living singer and she damn sure is not the highest paid in history!

I disagree with some of the placements on this list. I think Janet needs to be listed in 2001. I also would list Adele at 2011. I also would like to know what criteria are they using. Are they going by just album singles? Are they going by number one singles? Some of these placements would not exist if they were strictly going by number ones and album sells...just saying. I was pleased that Brandy was listed. Her commercial success and album sells are always underestimated.

I totally agree. I would say that she is probably the most hyped up and talked about female singer of this year, and that's all thanks to her powerful and well paid PR machine making sure she stays being talked about in the media while making her seem like this larger than life person who has achieved world domination.
