One that came to my mind was Bobby Brown. When he came out with his second solo album - 'Don't Be Cruel' and then released "My Perogative," his stardom certainly eclipsed what New Edition was doing or had done up to that point.

I think the OP meant someone that was still in a group. Bobby wasn't when this was released. Johnny Gill was still in NE when he released the album with Rub You The Right Way & My My My.

When Sisqo released his solo album in late 1999, he was on top of the R&B world. He was the lead singer of Dru Hill, and he was a budding solo superstar. Then he released the "Thong Song." It became his biggest hit ever, but his credibility was damaged severely after that, as most people outside his R&B fans thought of him as a novelty act.

^I think something that also factors into Sisqo not making it, is that his sophomore album didn't live up to expectations. 'Dance For Me' off Return of Dragon was bascially 'Thong Song pt. 2', but nowhere near as exciting despite not repeating the same lyrics 3 times over.

Everyone was going "yeah Sisqo, we've heard this already from you, last year; when you gonna come up with a new trick?"

He was competing with Usher's 8701 album at the time, and it ended badly for him. The little beef that was stirred between the two of them, was decided in Usher's favour. By that point, Sisqo had become a 2nd stringer, and he failed to capitalize on the genre-shift in R&B which was latching onto the crunk-infused sound like Usher did on 'Yeah'.

To me, R Kelly and Public Announcment weren't a "real" group". This was R Kelly's first album, but the record label was hot on male groups at the time and basically made him make a group- thus Public Announcement not being in most of the videos- and slowly being phased out as the album started to get hot.

I did like the one song PA did "Body Bumpin," I have the remix maxi single.

"Chaka" left "Street Player" in the dust! Then, of course, "What Cha Gonna Do For Me" and "Camoflauge" were both released in 1981.
