I like the track that they show the video for. His vocals actually reminded me of Prince.

I think the Bittorrent idea makes great sense too.

Thom Yorke is the First Artist to use BitTorrent's New Paywall Feature

Thom Yorke has sympathized with fans who pirate his music in the past, and now the Radiohead frontman is taking advantage of those pirates' favorite tool: torrenting.

The artist's latest solo album, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, is the first BitTorrent Bundle that will be partially locked behind a paywall.

Yorke said in an announcement that the album release is "an experiment."

He and producer Nigel Godrich want to see if the Yorke-loving music populace "can get its head around" the new business model.

Previous BitTorrent Bundles let torrenters have a free taste of some content and unlock the rest by providing an email address or an optional monetary "donation."

BitTorrent's Director of Communications Christian Averall said in 2013 that the company wants to "make the transaction easier" between artists and consumers.

Yorke fans will be able to download a single track and a video from the new album for free, but the singer will require more than an email address to cough up the rest.

Thankfully $6 isn't a lot to pay for an entire album. In this initial test of BitTorrent Bundle paywalls the artist handles the transaction and keeps 90% of the money, with the other tenth going to BitTorrent itself, and users have a limited number of downloads per transaction.

If people buy in and the "experiment" proves fruitful, more artists could go this route and provide fans with a cheap, easy way to get what they want through established technological channels.

Yorke's Album a Success For BitTorrent, 430K Downloads

Thom Yorke surprised fans on Friday with the release of a new solo album, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, made available exclusively at
BitTorrent for the pay-gated price of just $6.

As of Monday, there had been 430,000 downloads worldwide of the album. Some were free, as one track and a video in front of the paygate can be previewed before purchase. While that number can't be revealed under terms of the agreement, Matt Mason, chief content officer of BitTorrent Inc., said that the company has "been really, really happy at the conversion rate."

The numbers can be found at Yorke's Bundle. Mason noted, "The experiment was a massive success as far as we're concerned," and that consumers "can expect to see a lot from more us."

For BitTorrent, the release of Yorke’s album exemplifies its attempts to get in the good graces of content owners — many of whom have viewed the company’s software as facilitating rampant piracy. BitTorrent notes that it does not link to pirated content from its own services or software.

Under the deal, BitTorrent takes 10% of the profits, with the artist receiving 90%. Yorke had noted, in a joint statement with producer Nigel Gorich on Friday, "If it works well it can be an effective way of handing some control of Internet commerce back to people who are creating the work."
