We’re sad to report the death of noted soul, jazz and funk man, August William “Augie” Johnson at age 65. As the leader of several popular bands in the 1970s and 80s, Johnson combined great musical vision and a sense of humor to carve a permanent place for himself in R&B music lore.
Johnson formed the band Side Effect in 1972. The act was popular among both R&B and jazz fans and featured a revolving door of very talented female lead singers, including Miki Howard, Sylvia St. James and Helen Baylor. While not big hitmakers, the band charted several times, most notably with “Always There” and “Make You Mine.”

Side Effect initially split in the late 70s, and Johnson formed The Boppers, which he later renamed the L.A. Boppers. That band recorded several albums on Mercury, and combined brilliant musicianship with a sense of fun, making their funk/jazz discs an unadulterated pleasure during a time dominated by disco and straight up funk. They landed their biggest hit with “Is This The Beat (Bop Doo-Wah)” in 1981.

Both during and in between stints with his groups, Johnson made an impact working on albums of other artists such as Michael Jackson and Boz Scaggs, with whom he worked on hits like “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” and “Lowdown.” The Jackson connection came into play in early 2014, when Johnson attempted to clear up an internet rumor, admitting that he, not Jackson, was the father of Brandon Howard (son of Miki Howard), who had been rumored to be MJ's offspring.
Side Effect reunited in various forms over the years, most recently as “Augie’s Side Effect.” Under that moniker, Johnson recorded a song honoring the Olympic athletes as Augie’s Side Effect in 2012.

Augie Johnson was a one of a kind performer who will be missed.

Augie Johnson Founder of Side Effect Dies

*Wow, this is one of those “How can it be, I just saw him” moments.

That’s surely what it’s like for hundreds of record and radio industry associates who were at the annual “Legends and Icons” picnic at Woodley Park in LA’s San Fernando Valley last Sunday.

Augie Johnson and his Side Effect crew was there like everyone else having a great time as folks reminisced about the good ol’ days, family and all kinds of stuff like that.

Augie and Side Effect even regaled the picnic-ers with some of their acapella styling. In fact the song they sang features their female vocalist who wasn’t present, so Kathy Sledge (of the legendary Sister Sledge) , who was also there, helped the guys out as you can see from the picture below.

We don’t have specific details, but EUR was told that Johnson apparently died in his sleep Friday night and his girlfriend discovered him Saturday morning. She says he told her he wasn’t feeling well and was going to bed. She reportedly called him several times Saturday morning, but since he didn’t answer, she went to his place and found him dead.

EUR will have more details as they develop.

Let’s remember Augie by flashing back and checking out Side Effect’s classic “Always There” from their appearance on Soul Train:

Rip.

I can't see Brandon changing his tune about his paternity, in spite of the sad news. He is very consistent about his claims.
