Who are your favorite present-day artists? I'm all for talking about how badly music sucks now as well as the people who make it while listening to the vastly superior and quite frankly, comparatively untouchable music of the past but despite the severe nosedive in quality with today's music, there are a literal handful of current products that keep me on myv toes. With that, I have to ask who are your favorite artists of today? I know I feel the same way as most of the org when it comes to the present day music scene but all the same I'm curious, who are the artists today that maintain a glimmer of hope for you that music just might get better? For me, those artists are: -Bruno Mars -Janelle Monae -Big KRIT -Childish Gambino -Justin Timber-PSYCH!  Who are your personal aces in the hole? | |

Todays music isn't as "Horrible" as everyone says.. Todays mainstreem pop music is for the most part not very good, it's very uninspired and disposable in my opinion, but there are artist currently out there making really great music. Some of my favorites are:

I'm starting to get into a few new Electronic artists too, artists like Holy Ghost!,Grimes, Crystal Castles, and a few others Frank Ocean may have a hand in helping to revive R&B as a big time mainstream genre; the man is definitely talented even though I wasn't feeling anything other than sleepy when listening to Channel Orange. Kanye is really a veteran artist, he still makes music and is one of today's top names but he's been in the game for 10 years now! Overall, his discography is solid and varied but if Yeezus is anything to look at when it comes to what you can expect from Kanye's music moving forward then I'll pass. That album was wack in every sense of the word and only served to highlight just how far Kanye is up his own ass. [Edited 7/29/14 16:00pm] | |

I'd also like to add Adele to my list. She's still riding off the success of an album that can best be described as her "Thriller" so she has her work cut out for her with her next album. So long as the media and society don't do her like they did MJ and base the quality of her music on how many albums she sells and she doesn't cave into that pressure like MJ did she'll be fine. The woman has soul and she brings a sense of authenticity and vintage-ness to the current music scene that is needed. | |

Agreed. It's all about the hook now. There are a few mindless songs that I like but it seems that with few exceptions, this memorable anthems are missing from this generation. Trolls be gone! | |

Yeah I agree. I like Adorn and How Many Drinks w/Kendrick Lamar but I can't seem to really stay interested in Miguel for some reason. He's kind of forgettable in a way. What leg drop incident? Trolls be gone! | |

Bruno Mars Adele Sam Smith Disclosure Reva Devito London Grammar Ariana Grande (lot of talent, but I've yet to hear something she really puts that emotion into) JoJo Jamie Woon Stromae Jason Derulo (huge red flag for most of you guys, definite guilty pleasure for me, and he seems like a nice enough guy) ... Haven't been listening to all that much hip hop, though I've liked what I heard by the emcees some posters mentioned above (Kendrick, Gambino), as well as the 3 albums that came out last year by veterans Jay, Em, and especially Ye. . Adorn gives me Marvin Gaye vibes so that shows me that Miguel is indeed talented and has potential and I've heard nothing many a person say that Kaleidoscope Dream is a great album (I have yet to hear it) and while I'm sure it's good, not much has really been done in order to make me want to listen to it or expect KD to simply be more than a good R&B album. If the music itself isn't just that damn awesome or flawless/ nearly flawless then there better be something appealing about the artist in order to draw me in and there's nothing really appealing about Miguel since thus far he's nothing more than "R&B singer that leg dropped a girl during his performance". For an album to truly be great, the artist has to intriguing somehow IMO. | |

While Pure Heroine is praised everywhere I turn, the album makes me feel nothing except how musically gifted this girl is. One thing I did like about her first album though is the subdued counter-cultural message it had which goes against the current mindset that has polluted mainstream music in recent years (this also seems to be her persona which I also appreciate) but it's monotonous beats are a drag to listen to and the album is quite boring. Hopefully her next album is more upbeat and sonically interesting but retains the message and elegance of Pure Heroine. [Edited 8/1/14 9:17am] | |

Not very often I pop into this forum as I find the taste in music limited, Americacentric and uninspiring. This thread hasn't done a lot to change my thoughts on that. Lol :) A Winged Victory for the Sullen, The War on Drugs, Real Estate, Smoke Fairies, Rodrigo y Gabriel, Band of Skulls, Paul Johnson, Wolf Alice, Todd Terje, St Vincent, Letta Mbulu, Ibibio Sound Machine, Tune-Yards, Gary Clark Jr, ...the list goes on. Open your ears, open your mind. There is a wealth of music, more so than at any other time. There are too many albums released each week than I have time to listen to. By a long, long way.
