Most Consistent Artist Ever? Inspired by the thread suggesting Elton John was overrated despite his solid 70's work, got me thinking, is there actually any artist who doesn't have a period of work that looms over the rest of their discography? Or has no failed experiments or embarassing albums in there?
Someone like Hendrix (and Hendrix himself) who sadly died at or near the peak of their works quality is probably a candidate, but I'm not sure they count, as they could've made missteps if they had the chance too. [Edited 9/17/14 15:32pm]

I like all of Swing Out Sister's albums. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The beatles definitley quit while they were ahead, but if you consider solo stuff they don't qualify! My Legacy

Artists that don't do any type of "party music", don't rely on trendy sounds and don't try to please large audiences are good candidates for such a title.

Even if an artist isn't making party music, using trendy sounds, and not trying to please large audiences their music can still suck.

A lot of folks will disagree with me, but I will say U2. Sure, some albums are better than others ("Achtung Baby" vs "Rattle & Hum"), however, they seem to consistently change and when they change it isn't to 'latch on to' the latest craze, it's to challenge themselves. And they consistently put out good lyrics, good music. "She made me glad to be a man"

i thought of U2 also ...
I am not a huge fan ... i have seen them live ... and i loved actung baby ....
but - similar to "talking heads" i find their music to sound the same ... most of the time ...
although i must say - I like a few of their albums for the same reasons ... they change it up enough so it sounds "fresh" or new ....
this new album - that was free - i rolled my eyes at - but i just read a review by someone who i respect in musical review etc and he said he has listened to it for 2 days and likes it .... so .... hey ... for free ... hell ...

I don't think Coldplay have released a bad album yet. Foo Fighters are also on a hell of a winning streak to when it comes to albums.... their first one, which was more of a demo album, is the only one that's a bit average. www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

As I see it, inconsistency -- exploring and developing new themes and sounds -- often leads to consistently enjoyable music for artists.
Others enjoyed a pretty good burst: De La Soul, Van Hunt, Jamiroquai, Janet, and so many others.
