Now, is she taking the piss here?

Elvis Presley WAS criticised, PRECISELY for his 'twerking'. A fair bit in fact. I get what she's trying to say, but she couldn't have picked a worse example. Conservative America was losing its mind over Elvis's sexual persona, it wasn't until he toned himself down into a singing buffoon in films that he was embraced.

Hell, it's not even like this is some obscure piece of Elvis trivia. It was in the Kurt Russell movie and everything.

I'm pretty sure what is now called twerking existed in Africa long before Elvis was born or there was a record business. As far as Elvis goes, he was shown waist up on TV because of his dancing and called a n-lover that sang jungle bunny music that was corrupting the (white) youth. Rock 'n roll was said to cause juvenile delinquency. The FBI even spied on Elvis and kept a file on him. So I don't know what double standard there is.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

THe classism evident in that video is crazy. For those of you who didn't make it all the way through watch just the last few minutes. And to think this is one of the kinder commentaries about Elvis made in the 50's by the "establishment".

It probably wasn't an accident that Elvis was drafted and sent off to Germany. They might have figured he was a fad and his popularity would be gone when he got out. There was the payola hearings in the late 1950's that was designed to kill rock and roll. There was payola before rock but the government wasn't really worried about it, it's only when rock n' roll became popular with teens. Colonel Parker cleaned up Elvis' image while he was away. Parker got Elvis songs that were less rock and put him in a patriotic style movie when he got out - G.I. Blues.

There was a time decades ago, that Elvis Presley was know by his critics as "Elvis The Pelvis". But of course, someone as young as Miley wouldn't know jackshit about that because she doesn't know her music history like she should.

No, she said Elvis was the original twerker and that he wasn't criticized for it. Because he's a man I guess. So she said there's a double standard. Elvis never twerked, but he did get complaints about his dancing and he was censored on TV, so he didn't get away with anything because he was a guy.

I'm reading a new book about the Staple Singers and Mavis mentions Elvis.

.

In 1957, the Staples performed on a Goodwill bill that included a young Memphis gospel group, the Dixie Nightingales, with 16 year old David Ruffin, future vocalist in The Temptations.

.

"He was a little skinny guy - even I was taller than him," Mavis recalls of watching Ruffin perform at Mason Temple, a Pentecostal church with more than 3,500 celebrating fans in attendance. "But he sang with so much feeling, he'd go all through you. You'd just have to sit there and hold yourself to keep from exploding. Cleedi couldn't keep herself from shouting, she just had to let herself go. But I'd fight it. You see he was bad."

.

Ruffin's cool was pierced by Rufus Thomas, ever the practical joker. "Rufus jumped down off the stage into the audience with this can, opened up the can right in David's face, and out popped a 3-foot [fake] green snake, and David's eyes got as big as...he thought it was a real snake!" Mavis says. "He shot down the aisle. He eventually came back to his seat still shaking."

.

While the Staples performed, three leather-jacketed figures appeared in the wings just offstage. Mavis noticed them because they happened to be just about the only white guys in the room, and they were carrying motorcycle helmets. After she got offstage, one of the bikers struck up a conversation.

.

"He told me his name but it didn't register," Mavis says. "He knew our music real well, though, and he told me he loved the way Pops played his guitar. 'I like the way your daddy plays that nervous guitar.' David Ruffin comes up to me afterward and is all excited. 'Do you know who that was?' I just shook my head. 'That's the guy who sings Blue Suede Shoes!' "

luv4u said "Twerking has been around years before Miley was born".

By saying Elvis was the original twerker Miley already is saying twerking has been around before she was born. So what's your point?
