It's, um, back. It's just gone (slightly) underground.

I don't agree with the big band comparison at all. Just because you don't hear "proper" rock music on the radio channels that play mainstream TOP40 stuff doesn't mean that rock music has gone away.

Most bands in the world play rock, most bands in the world that play live play rock, most people that go see live gigs go see rock gigs and there are so many unsigned rock bands in the world that it's not funny.

Big bands went away because it's impossible to maintain a big band ensemble unless you're making enough money of it. Being able to play in one usually demands formal education, which is not the case with rock music.

Don't get me wrong, I love Gary Clark Jr, but he'd damn lucky guitar music is dead, because I don't see him standing out in the 70's based purely on his playing.

Agree with you to a degree. Big Bands went away because that style of music was no longer popular, money comes with popularity. The music itself never "goes away". I saw the Benny Goodman orchestra as a kid (dating myself) and he still had that swing and this was 40 + years after swing was the rock and roll of the time.

I don't think current indie rock or punk rock are that far removed from "guitar music" to start worrying about it disappearing.

After Dusty Hill, the bassist for ZZ Top fell and broke his hip and caused the cancellation of the co-headlining tour of ZZ Top and Jeff Beck, Beck went on to headline three dates on the East coast, and all were sold out.

For those that don't know, Jeff Beck is noted for all instumental guitar music since his best-selling 1975 album BLOW BY BLOW. His shows are majority all instrumenatl dominated by his superb guitar playing.

I think he is a testament that guitar music is not totally dead. BTW he will be touring the US inthe Spring of 2015.

The guitar has been pushed into a background role or even eliminated at times in todays world of pop, rap, and r&b music. There are no current guitar icons to inspire todays youth such as Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Prince, Ernie Isley, Steve Vai etc. to inspire them to want to play and the music departments in many schools have been deminished considerably. It takes passion, patience, and dedication in addition to talent to be great at guitar or anyother of our other top 5 instruments and examples of this are now few and far between. It may never return to what it once was thanks to our current crop of producers, musical trends, etc.

Yeah It's really sad about the lack of music in schools now. I'm 24 and when I was in elementary school I was learning the violin but by the time I got to high school there wasn't any music classes anymore (unless you wanted to be in the marching band which I wasn't interested in). I probably would have picked up playing bass sooner if there was but I learned how to play in my 20s which is pretty late I guess when it comes to learning to play instruments lol I also was inspired by kim deal and melissa auf der maur to start playing.
