Superstars inThe 90s In The 80s we had about 4 superstars. Prince,Michael, Madonna and Janet. There was also George Michael, Tina, and Whitney who where superstars in some countries. But what I want to know is who was super in The 90s. When it comes to The 90s I don't remember many. Mariah, TLC and maybe Toni Braxton are all I can think of. What about Allanis Morrisette? SUperstar remember is an artist with global sales over 10 milllion. Working up a purple sweat.

Kurt Cobain, Tupac, Shania Twain, The Notorious BIG, Guns N' Roses (became big in the late 80's but were stadium superstars with the release of the UYI albums in the early 90's).
I wouldn't call Toni Braxton a superstar. Alanis and Mariah yes.

Garth Brooks & Shania Twain sold a lot of albums and maybe the Dixie Chicks, Brooks & Dunn, and Ace Of Base too. Vanilla Ice's 1st album sold over 11 million in the US and Billy Ray Cyrus' Some Gave All album sold 9 million in the US and over 20 million worldwide. As for the 90s, I don't really know. Pearljam and Radiohead maybe...

My Way, Usher's second album, made him a superstar. And that was in the 1990's.

Kylie's 90s career is pretty much nonexistant bar Confide In Me. She had a lot more success in the 2000s.

I agree she was more internationally successful (counting north america) in the 00's than the 90's

As for biggest artists in the 90's sales wise, I would say TLC, mj, celine dion, mariah, whitney, madonna, janet, nirvana, alanis morrisette, oasis, shania twain, garth brooks, backstreet boys, spice girls, p diddy, will smith, 2pac, biggie, ace of base. [Edited 9/9/14 9:50am]

Correction, if you look in Wikipedi you'll see My Way only sold 7 million copies. He didn't go over 10 million til Confessions.

It makes no difference. Usher was still a superstar in the mid-1990's, at a time when the internet was still young and some people were downloading whatever the hell they wanted back then, the fact that 7+ million fans actually brought the album counts for something.

At 10 mil and up you're a superstar. At 4-5 mil you're a star. It took him till 2004 to get anywhere close to the class of Michael and James Brown. Working up a purple sweat.

If individual albums is the criteria, then I don't think James has any that sold 10 million. I doubt most of his albums even went platinum. Well James is an older artist. There weren't as many people in The World then. Also people weren't selling 20 million then. Working up a purple sweat.

The 90's are hard. I don't think there were any that quite reached the level of the biggest 4 of the 80's: Michael Madonna Prince Whitney I think the closest though would be.... Mariah Garth Kurt 2Pac It's interesting how the biggest of the 80's seemed almost otherworldly with their images (except maybe Whitney). Growing up, Michael, Prince and Madonna may as well have been aliens with their level of fame and eccentricities. The 90's superstars seemed to take a more down to earth approach with their image. Mariah was just girl next door, Garth was a good ol' boy, although he was in his 20's, Kurt was the poster boy of the angst ridden 90's teenager and 2Pac was straight from the hood and that was the image he wanted to portray as well. The 90's superstar didn't seem interested in being "out there" in the way the 80's stars were.

By THOSE^ standards that only you want to use, Jimi Hendrix was never a 1960's superstar, never mind the fact that he is THE most influencial guitarist of all-time.

Will some of you please stop overlooking Shania Twain & Celine Dion! Those ladies were superstars in the 1990's.

I was trying to narrow it down to just 4 though and I feel like Mariah sort of defines the 90's more so than Celine and Shania. Mariah was so massive from 1990 straight through the end of the decade. She was churning out an album per year pretty much and breaking all sorts of chart records. She also kind of started the whole featuring a rapper trend on her songs. She was also a bit of a sex symbol, all dudes wanted to fuck Mariah back in the day. Celine had the whole Titanic association which was a cultural phenomenon but as a 90's teen looking back on it, she just didn't seem as massive as Mariah. Now had Shania had the sort of success she had with Come On Over throughout the whole decade, I would probably replace Mariah but she was only massive 1998-99. Another strong contender would be Alanis of course. That album was an absolute phenomenon. I still say that none of the names mentioned here hold a candle to the superstar power of the top 80's stars.

Though Mariah was huge in the 90's and still remembered for a lot of her hits, Celine will always be remembered for not just My Heart Will Go On, but also Falling Into You album, and the Beauty and the Beast, Power of Love days. I guess it depends where in the world you're from really...
Mariah did not start that trend at all, it was already happening in the 80's and early 90's, she just was the queen of doing it more often and crossing over with it, that it just became more commonplace since.

That wasn't it. James wasn't really a big album seller and King Records was like 1960's Motown in that singles were the focus, not selling albums. For most of his early career James (and other acts pre-1970's) released albums and singles really often, either under his own name or under others. There was a period in the late 1960's, James put out 4 or 5 albums a year in addition to non-album singles. . For the most part the blockbuster album sales really started in the 1970s. Beforehand, the labels didn't milk albums like Rumours lineup Fleetwood Mac and later Michael Jackson's Thriller. Albums mostly came and went, but there were exceptions, usually Broadway musical & movie soundtracks before The Beatles came out.
