Michael Nesmith is the godfather of country rock. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

-Lady Gaga is the biggest star we've had in the past 6 years -I fail to see how she's like Madonna at all -Sign O The Times is a rather dull album and does nothing for me -From what very little I know and understand about the genre, hair metal was not that bad at all -The Beatles are the most overrated act in history -Rock is the most overrated genre of music in history -Disco > rock -Rihanna is far more interesting and has better music than Beyonce -All the top stars of the 2000s are interchangeable -Having to dig for today's good music is a chore that no one should have to subject themselves too. I listen to underground rap so I don't quite mean it this way but if ithe music is not mainstream then it's not worth listening too -The 80s British Invasion had a lot more variety and gave us much better music than the original British Invasion -Detroit is the greatest musical city in the world; any city that had Motown to its name is deserving of that title -Adele deserves her success more than any other act in music that has debuted in the past 6 years -I like Biggie and his music but Tupac was always better than him -Kanye >>> peak Jay Z -Yeezus is garbage and easily Kanye's worst album -David Banner is one of the GOAT rappers -People need to get over Janet's Superbowl incident already. It's been 10 friggin years... quit whining about it -Heal the World is not that bad -We are the World is easily one of the GOAT songs solely based on the talent involved but in and of itself it is a very good song -Miley could probably make decent music if she weren't so pathetically desperate, she's a good singer

Love this thread... 1. Prince is the most talented and artistically complicated pop musician (instrumentalist, vocals, producer, performer, songwriter, creative drive) of the last 50 years. 2. Prince has given up on introspective lyrics. 3. Bjork was better with outside writers and production. Her music has become stale and unlistenably introverted. 4. Anyone under the age of 25 has never seen a great concert. 5. Michael Jackson's overall catalog is very disappointing when you factor in the highlights and his extreme talents. 6. Solo Beatles' albums are embarrassingly bad. 7. U2 is way overrated.

I can agree with this. As great as his catalog already is, MJ could have definitely had an near flawless one if he was more like Prince in terms of stepping out further from his comfort zone sonically and artistically as well as not being so held up on outselling Thriller.

- Sad that none of today's pop singers don't care about making social conscious music like the past. i.e. James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye etc. They have a platform where they could use their music to influence people but only seem to care about their money and not the problems everyday people, the same people that put money in their pockets go through -I like Mariah but when you sit back and really look at her accomplishments in retrospect, she really did not make that big of an impact and only has a few classics. - Jodeci is far more influential than Boys II Men. They are more interesting and have a more eclectic disography - There hasn't been an interesting and athletic female entertainer since Janet Jackson - There is a hidden agenda in today's pop music industry to only specifically market 5 pop singers. - To many ass kissers in today's industry and not enough people who have the guts to really say how awful today's music really is. - Dangerous and HIStory are Michael's best risky works. They are artistically and lyrically superior to BAD and Thriller. This debate is pretty tired and ridiculous at this point because its only people who have not bothered to listen to his music after BAD. - This "new generation" of stans have really killed music debates and discussions on music forums - Fantasia is the best female pop vocalist of her generation. The comparisions to Patti are well deserved IMHO. The girl can sang and is underrated as a performer. - All the disco acts, Bee Gees, Donna Summer etc created some of the greatest music of all time and deserve a hell of alot more credit for their impact on the music industry. - Raheem DeVaughn's Love Experience album was one of the most interesting and daring R&B albums in a long time. - Black bands like WAR, Sly and the Family Stone etc have made a bigger impact musically than The Beatles who I find extremely overrated besides a few songs. I do like solo John Lennon though - Chuck D is the ONLY Hip Hop legend who actually stands up for black people and doesn't sugar coat the truth about today's music. I love him.

***I know that Justin Timberlake isn't very popular on this site (lol) but I think he's done some great songs."My Love","Suit And Tie" and "Rock Your Body" are excellent singles.....as good as pop music gets these days.
***'The Gold Experience' was truly the last brilliant album that Prince made.I love it all the way through and I never have to hit the "skip" button when I listen to it.
***These days, alot of artists are trying to do a retro-soul/R&B/disco/funk thing, but nobody does it better than Jamiroquai.I am starving for a new album from them.

All music is real and it can't be proven that one genre or act is better than any other. There is no such thing as "real music by real musicians". If it's a musical sound, then it's music, no matter how it was created. . Just because someone records message music or protest songs doesn't make their music any superior to bubblegum, love, comedy, or novelty songs. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Strongly agree with all of this.
Not sure if this is "controversial" exactly, but for a supposed singles band, I always thought the Jackson 5 recorded quite a few very good whole albums. I find every Jackson 5 album easier to listen to from start to finish than any solo Michael album post-Bad.
On that subject, I also consider Michael's solo Motown work to be sorely underrated, way more than HIStory, BOTDF or Invincible are. [Edited 9/9/14 8:37am]

Tupac is easily better than Biggie (my grandfather also met him before his death, at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY) . Lady Gaga is more talented than anyone else out there . James Brown and Little Richard are overrated as hell, and unlistenable (SORRY!) . Mariah Carey IS very influential, like her or not. . Limahl should have had a dozen hits!
Maybe do, just not like did before

There are some that are that. But given the high points that are Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Ram, Band On the Run, All Things Must Pass, Dark Horse and RINGO, I think they have one of the better solo outputs of any band ever. What other band has had at least one bonafide classic album from ALL of its members?

. His music is the type you can listen to a few tracks and see a clip or two of him dancing and think "Oh cool, so this is the guy who basically *made* Prince and Michael, etc..." . But that's about it I'm sure he's very talented and innovative (a lot of R&B owes to him), but I just was never interested in his music and even after giving it a chance, found it dated and boring. Maybe do, just not like did before

. Lots of eighties music, whether it be synthpop/dance, rock/metal, funk, R&B.. Nineties mainstream music, Indie rock bands Really love The Eagles, My music taste is pretty diverse, in the way I can love a 60-year old piano tune, or a full blown arena rock ballad, or a catchy little dance song. . Don't know why JB never struck me. But that's the beauty of opinions Maybe do, just not like did before

There are some solo Beatles records that are better than Beatle records! In my opinion Imagine, Ram, McCartney and Plastic Ono Band beat Let It Be [Edited 9/9/14 16:28pm] "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"

Here's mine, CONTROVERSIAL???
1. Led Zeppelin really aren't that good, the vocals are not great to listen to. 2. MJ's Invincible is one of the worst pop albums of the 90's 3. Prince should sing more about religion purely because of how good The Rainbow Children is (I'm a massive Dawkins supporting Atheist) 4. Sheila E was one of Princes worst drummers 5. All Saints were better than The Spice Girls 6. The Rolling Stones are massively overrated 7. "MIDNITE VULTURES" Is Becks best record 8. Kate Bush is still sexy [Edited 9/9/14 16:39pm] "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"

Eminem is a better lyricist than Tupac, Biggie and Jay Z. Groundbreaking wordplay and fantastic tempo changing. The only ones who deserve to be in the top 3 are Nas and Rakim. (Rakim being #1 IMO).
