Controversial Music Opinions Part 2. I did a thread like this months ago. And it went rather well me feels like. Here's the rules... Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Hmmmm... a few of those ^ i need to digest. I'll start with those that are on my mind: 1) Rob Zombie (post White Zombie days) is a better filmmaker than songwriter/musician 2) PJ Harvey making guitarless songs sounds as good as vocalless choir music. 3) Lady Gaga makes people unconfortable because shes like a walking personification of the fakeness of everyones everyday life. Insofar as mainstream American culture is fake and inspires people to live as fake people tryong to impress strangers, Gaga is a hyper representation of that same mainstream America 4) Courtney Love is/has always been just as talented as Kurt Cobain Change it one more time..

just curious...what songs on that album (Thriller) do you consider to be "filler"?

Baby Be Mine zzzz give me the nyquill. The Girl Is Mine is just cheesy and i never liked it. I liek some cheese... but that's the whole nacho. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

"Filler" doesn't mean "a song I don't like" or a "song that doesn't do anything to me". It means the people making the record didn't have enough strong material for the record and used something even they considered substandard to fill up the expected playing time for the release. It's not a subjective term that can be used to describe just about anything.

Sorry, but #1 is complete nonsense.
"The 7 Day Theory" is the greatest album that Pac ever made. "White Man'z World", "Krazy", "Hold Ya Head"..... rarely has the true black struggle ever been expressed so beautiful across the whole range of emotions....anger, fear, pride, mistrust, strength, the need for unity. The consequences of fame, Pac's internal struggle. The album is his masterpiece, and not just my favorite hip-hop record, but one of the greatest examples of black sociopolitical commentary of all time. It's up there with Gil Scot Heron and Public Enemy in that regard.
Thug Life is not bullshit, people misunderstanding what Thug Life is, is where the problem is. Thug Life was intended as a manifesto for urban youth to rise up and take control of their destiny, through unity, education, co-operation. 2Pac and his stepfather Mutulu Shakur united Bloods and Crips in 1992 to sign the code of Thug Life. Parts of the code included things like, no selling of drugs to children or pregnant women, the declaring of concerts and parties to be neutral gang zones of no violence, and that harm to children is completely unacceptable!
To say that Thug Life is bullshit is a complete misunderstanding of what Pac was about. To say that his music on Death Row was bullshit means you ain't listening properly. Listen again to "Hold Ya Head", "Staring Through My Rearview", "Life Goes On", "Shorty Wanna Be A Thug", "Lost Souls", "Until The End Of Time", "Letter To The President"...... ALL Death Row songs! |

I actually think many people overthunk of MJ's songs on Thriller. The only tracks that could be considered as influential lyrically and musically are Billie Jean and Human Nature. I still consider Thriller one of the best 10 albums I've ever listened to in my life (Growing up, that was my friend). It's just that when it comes to artistry, almost every song is about love, romance and passion, themes that are so easily to be dealt with, MJ approached that with disco/funk music but nothing was groundbreaking except the sonical value of the recordings. I've seen some orgers here accusing me of comparing Bruno Mars' music with MJs while they're obviously similar (I'm talking about Off The Wall & Thriller & Bad). Michael went to deal with more mature themes in HIStory but the music sucked.

- "Purple Rain" si actually Princes best album. Period. Most fans and purists love to disagree because it's too accessible, too pop, too mainstream.
- Tom Waits is the best lyricist ever. (And regarding that, Bob Dylan is way overrated) - punk music is 99% garbage and useless (I still dig the looks and the graphics from that era). - Rihanna has better music, videos, looks and music diversity than Beyoncé (though beyonces voice is slightly better to my ear) - Jamie Foxx "unpredictable" album could have been the best album of th last decade. But singing about having sex in 263849 ways in almost every song fucked that up - common is sooo underrated. "BE" and "finding forever" albums are classics IMHO. - the best soulful act of the 80s was British : Sade. (Hell even George Michael was way soulful than 90% of black Americans acts from that era). - Prince holds a big responsibility in the over-sexualization in current black (and white pop&B) music. - thanx to current dull slow ass trap/shit hop music and binary stupid electro dance music, clubbing has become boring than ever. - the Backstreet Boys sang some of the best and catchiest pop songs of the 90s. - All Saints (the spice girls "rivals") debut album is one of the best female R&B album of the 1990s. - all of D'Angelo's music is overrated. Most of it is good, but not as good as people pretend. - fuck the hipster bashing, Coldplay first 3 albums are classics. - stop the grunge dick-riding, because besides nirvana, grunge music has never been that big (besides in the US). - Brazilian music from the 60s is underrated. Best "Latin" music ever. - jamiroquai music was not as good when they quit drugs. - I don't get the tupac vs biggie comparison: tupac was wayyyy better. - same for Nas vs. Jay Z : Nas output ejaculates on Jay Zs. - same for the Beatles vs the stones. The Beatles win, hands down! After the Beatles split, the stones made 2 good albums and they went down the shithole afterwards. - besides Bob Marley and a song from random artists here and there, reggae music has never been that interesting. - the Smiths is the best British rock act of the 1980s. - oasis and blur both sucked. - AIR (French band) make the best elevator music. - African guitarists are underrated. African music sometimes have the trickiest guitar playings I've ever heard. - Timbaland kinda lost his magic touch when he distanced himself from Ginuwine, Aaliyah and Missy. - French touch house music is better than Chicago house music. - Adele deserves her success. I'm not a fan per se, but I'm happy to see a 'normal looking' woman singing simple love song with her clothes on. And she CAN sing! - no, Whitney Houston and Anita baker didn't kill funk and danceable black music. Muthafuckin NWA and early hip hop mainstream acts did. Whitney was never about music for clubs. Hip hop was (or claimed to be). - Kanye west made more 'classic' albums than any other hip hop act in history : College Dropout, Late registration and My Dark... Eminem is second, ex aequo with Jay Z and Tupac. - indie/ underground music is not that interesting and innovative anymore, they tend to all sound the same to me : same hip hop/ electro beats + nonsense lyrics + whack band names + lot of reverb and They ALL sound the same to me, vocally, males and females. Coldplay bores me to tears.
The Smiths is way better than Morrissey Solo Career.
Jobraith should of have been more popular than Ziggy Stardust(Love you Bowie, just saying)
Nine Inch Nails only good album is Pretty Hate Machine.
Marilyn Manson aesthetics are ripped off from Virgin Prunes, Rozz Williams and Bowie
Nothing in Rock N Roll is original.
Roxy Music was better with Brian Eno.
Most "metal" music bores me.
Metallica Sucks.
Punk is way better than Metal.
never really got the appeal of The Beatles Or Nirvana. Sure they have good songs. Just never liked them as a band.

I agree. Baby Be Mine is one of Michael's greatest vocal performances on a song. It is one of his most underrated songs. His vocals are flawless and so pure on the song. Its a nice bubble gum R&B tune. If it would have been released as a single, it would have easily been a R&B classic.

I think pretty much everybody acknowledges that The Smiths are better than Morrissey solo. I've never heard anyone say they prefer him as a solo artist.
As for NIN, sorry, but no. Pretty Hate Machine is indeed my favorite, but "The Fragile" and "Year Zero" are both amazing records as well. |

100%! My second fave song on the album. And as much of a good feeling song as Human Nature is, lyrically it NEVER made sense to me. Maybe it's supposed to be a stream-of-conscienceness thing

Ooh, fighting words there. RS is where they start getting really imaginative and interesting, but the stuff before that is innovative in a different way. American Garage Rock starts with Twist and Shout, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and I Saw Her Standing There. It's different from the American stuff that came right before it, more hard. Oh yeah, it's great.
Demonstrably false if you come over my house. I haven't bought Anaconda though so maybe you have a point. I just watch it on Youtube a lot.
Mingus is waaaay up there for sure and maybe should get more notice than he does but it's hard for me to place anyone on the same level as Miles except for maybe Duke Ellington. He went to so many places, so completely out there, before anyone else had even tried. Miles had more visions for new kinds of music than any other three legends you could name, combined.

I wouldn't argue the point but, both bow down to Slayer.

Definitely a masterpiece, however; r&b fans prefer Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999. Unfortunately pop fans didn't take notice of Prince until Little Red Corvette. Just because pop music fans didn't acknowledge Prince during his previous 3 masterpieces doesn't make those releases any less credible than Purple Rain. Unfortunately that's the attitude with some pop music fans on this board and you will have a few that will try to undermine r&b classic albums with a snobbish attitude. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I'll also say one other overbuzzed thing about Michael Jackson. This man was a phenomenal singer when he was young, and growing up in the 70s he managed to soften his voice to a very high pitched range, by 1982 or so MJ still had the strong voice, as the vocals on Beat It & Billie Jean are all time killers, it's just that something went wrong after that, beginning from the Dangerous tour, MJ's vocals live sucked big time, he had to lip sync almost every song, and when he tried to actually sing, he sounded like a dying frog. With that in mind, I don't see the point from people claiming that MJ is one of the best vocalists of all time, he's literally nowhere near Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke or Jackie Wilson, or even Prince in that matter.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This is complete B.S. MJ is far more superior to Prince vocally. I also think MJ deserves to be called one of the greatest pop vocalist because he was but of course that is my opinion. He is actually underrated as vocalist.

I always thought Human Nature was a stream of consciousness which is why I always thought it was lyrically interesting. The production along with the vocals really set the tone of the song.

Muzak, adult contemporary, light rock, & easy listening performers should get more recognition and not jokes calling them "cheesy" or "elevator music" or "yacht rock". They're just as valid as any other music. The Lawrence Welk Show didn't last for decades for no reason. People liked the show and watched it. PBS still shows the reruns. Johnny Mathis' Christmas albums continue to sell every year. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. I think that is happening less in the new era where everybody likes "all kinds of music". Hipsters are going to start getting into Andy Williams before we know it, It will be described as a reaction against the blase lack of sincerity in modern music, people will want to hear singers who sound like they mean it. I remember Sonic Youth talking about the Carpenters in such terms 20 years ago, why shouldn't their progeny reach even further back?
Hey, anybody listened to "Music To Watch The Girls Go By" recently? That is a pretty groovy tune. Although today it would be blasted for being partiarchal and heteronormative. Once it's no longer OK to to like art like that, the Easy Revival will come to an end.

1.The Beatles.........the most overrated group in music history.
2.Mj was a great entertainer but he focused 2 much on the video format and not enough on the actual music as an adult.
3. 95% of all Hiphop/rap drives me batty.
4. Any artist that can't sing live should NOT be allowed 2 make records
5. Anyone who claims 2 like music and doesn't like anything Prince ever did, I simply don't trust.
6. I don't understand Madonna or Lady Gaga's success at all. Not even a little.
7. How did Pat Boone make it as an artist?
8. Donny Hathaway, one the most underrated vocalist of all-time.

Well, I don't think Whitney Houston, Kenny G, Luther Vandross, & Freddie Jackson killed anything. There was adult contemporary long before funk existed. Whitney wasn't the 1st to do it and she wasn't the 1st to get airplay with AC songs on R&B stations.
