Janet was just around longer, but didn't outsell Mariah at anytime though she could have. Having said that, this list is just a push to sell Mariah's flop album.

I would have been embarrassed to print my name on the byline of that article. Pop music is becoming the all purpose, non purpose music of the ages.

Had Janet put out more albums in the 90's I definitely think that she would have had a shot at out selling MC. To be named the 2nd biggest artist of the 90's is pretty damn impressive when you consider the fact that she (Janet) only put out 2 albums that whole decade. I like some of Mariah's music don't get me wrong, but putting her above all of those other better artist is ludacris. BlackCat1985

She was NOT the second biggest seller of the 90's, though she was in the top 5 best selling females of the 90's. Celine and Whitney were definitely ahead of her. Would have been great and deserving though. I love Mariah too and have almost all her albums, but always thought she acted tacky about numbers and a few other things.

billboard named janet the 2nd biggest artist of the 90s behind mariah, they dont just base it on sales.they include chart success as well.rhythm nation was technically released in89 but they included it for the 90s since it was still huge up to 91. mariah put out like 8 albums in the 90s alone.

if billboard is not the offcial 'bible' of the industry we can throw out all those #1 singles mariah has and her breaking the beatles record is null and void because it comes from the billboard charts.the RIAA does certifications, the label or artist pays to have their records certified...if sony shipped 10 million copies of a mariah album and paid to have it certified, guess what, they gonna certify it. soundscan tracks the actual sales and reports to billboard, thats how the hot 200 chart is determined. saying billboard is not official is a contradiction on your part since this thread declaring mariah #1 is based on a billboard list.

Mariah's smartest career move: marrying Tommy Mottola being married to the president of her record company basically guaranteed that she would have all those hit singles.

Yes Exactly! I never said that Janet was the 2nd best selling artist of the 90's. I said that she was the 2nd biggest artist of the 90's. BlackCat1985

Sorry you're wrong, Diamond means a certification issued by the RIAA, not the sales number reported by Nielsen SoundScan. Mariah's Music Box & Daydream are both certified Diamond for their shipments. SoundScan did not cover the complete market back in the 1990s, this is why there is a discrepancy between the certification and the reported sales number. It's a misconception that Sony "overshipped" her albums to score certifications. Other 1990s blockbusters, such as TLC's CrazySexyCool or Jewel's Pieces Of You are both reported to be in the 7.5 million sales range just like Mariah's two efforts by SoundScan but they are certified for 11x and 12x Platinum, respectively.

Stop hating [Edited 9/5/14 23:02pm] Still doesn't mean she's a bigger star than the people she topped on the list. Why can't she simply be an excellent singer who had a lot of hits without trying to make her sound bigger than she really is?

Having said that, it appears the Lambs are spinning her legacy to make sure people remember her, just like Madonna's fans did in the 2000's. As for other divas, we may talk about Janet Jackson a lot here, but she barely registers as a blip with younger audiences. Whitney Houston is that lady with the huge monster hit love song that did too many drugs and ultimately died, Celine Dion is that lady who does Vegas shows, and Christina Aguilera was that judge on The Voice. And don't even ask young people today about the Beatles, Motown, or the original Woodstock artists; that's for people in nursing homes.

I disagree with this. She was without a doubt, the biggest album seller with the most hits of the 90's but calling her the BIGGEST ACT of the 90's is an exaggeration. I think it is fair to call her one of the biggests acts. Mariah's problem is outside of her sells and her vocals, she doesn't have that much influence. Her disography hasn't aged well and despite her sells/hits she doesnt really have alot of classics which is why her past hits really don't mean anything now.
Janet has alot more influence than her even with the younger audience today. People really underestimate Janet's influence. Just because someone is not visible does not mean they are not influential.

Yeah! I don't know where that person got their info from because I definitely see young new female artist mentioning Janet. Zendaya, Tinishae, and Selena Gomez to name a few. And these young girls weren't even born when Janet was in her hayday. BlackCat1985
