This IS one case where I'm grateful for Michael Jackson fans. The media will try to make Justin the successor, but MJ fans are too irrational, vocal and just batsh!t crazy to let that happen. Unless Justin decides to give up on music and focus on an acting career. Everyone seems determined to make him gifted at that too.

All this being said I think even some detractors (a couple obvious people notwitstanding) can admit that Justin has put out some enjoyable, solid work. He and Timbaland (who claims Justin co-writes everything) have stumbled into a groove.

Maybe the whole "charm" thing has rubbed some the wrong way. He's good looking which I think gives him a pass in many situations. It reminds me of the "30 Rock" episode where Liz tries to have a relationship with Jon Hamm only to realize that because he's so good looking his life is radically different then hers. I mean just look at all the press he gets for co-hosting Saturday Night Live. He's good for SNL acting, but performers who have really killed it as hosts (Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars) don't get half the press.

The whole appropriation thing goes beyond music into sociology. R&B used to be a haven for black artist. There was a time when Luther Vandross and the like were having multi-platinum albums yet rarely saw a pop chart. Then they crossed over. Now it seems the only way to sell R&B is to be white. It's kind of a strange phenomenon especially if "all things black" are supposedly inferior to the culture. But then that goes back to if you don't have to pay blacks to do it then why pay?

So my final verdict on whether Justin is racist or not is a confident No.

The part where you wrote that MJ fans are too irrational, vocal and batshit crazy made me laugh. I am gladly part of that camp as well smile

. . . and it clouds your judgment when assessing a recording artist in the same vein, a la

Justin Timberlake.

MJ fans are rabidly insane about protecting his legacy and will hold off any artist who makes

an attempt to equal or god forbid (!) surpass his stature as the King of Pop. But the thing is

is that MJ was transcendent; you do not transcend the transcendent. Rest easy: Michael

Jackson's legacy is irrefragably immutable.

But this does not mean that we can't enjoy those who dare aspire or are heavily influenced by

that legacy.

You called him a "douche" as if he's personally attacked you. And your vitriol towards him

seems over the top; it's hardly influenced by any facts, just some type of personal resentment.

For example, you claim that he makes imitation R&B music. But you never tells us what real

R&B music is! No! Don't do it; don't list real R&B artists (in your opinion) and expect that to

count as a valid definition. It's as if your disdain for him overtakes reason. And you did call

him out:

"Justin is a dooche...He is an asshole which is why people do not like him and its as simple as

that."

I don't care if he's a douche. And/or an asshole. You know who else in pop music has been

referred to similarly?

Prince.

I just like the man's music and don't enjoy that experience based upon whether or not I agree

with his personality traits. I'm tired of people always hollerin' about "It's my opinion! I'm en-

titled to my opinion!" Look - you can have all the opinions you want. But sometimes,

opinions are stupid, in that they are based off of emotions with little thought to support them.

You are entitled to have the opinion that the sky is red. But that don't mean that opinion ain't

stupid!

I called him a douche because that is my opinion whether you think it is stupid or not. This has nothing to do with me feeling "personally attacked." Everyone's stating an opinion in this thread and nothing is a fact neither are your opinions. Where did I call what I stated as a fact? nuts Your the one that sounds like you have a personal resentment towards the criticism some here have for Justin. I think its ridiculous because people can say whatever they want to say and they don't need your permission to say what they want.

Agreed. I think that's the M.O., make inflammatory remarks that they probably don't even believe anyway. Just do it for the shock value. To me, the concept of "black card" is ridiculous and I don't think I've met many other black folks who agree that there even needs to be such a thing as a "black card". I don't know where this concept came from but it's ridiculous because really, there's no such thing as a "white card", or is there? LOL

Just because some men in suits decided on that and then got some rich and famous black people to publicly co-sign does not mean he has a "black" card.

I think only the "New Blacks" tell white people they have a "Black" pass. It's a nice little addition to go along with their privilege card.

.

It's a flimsy concept to begin with.

I totally agree with this.

I always find it bewildering how black people give passes to black celebrities or either white celebrities that disrespect the black community. I will never understand it. We give to many excuses on things we should be more vocal about.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this thread is specifically about one person and not an entire race of people but keep in mind that when black people screw up, it definitely gets discussed as an "epidemic" in our community. Nuff said.

No where have I said you are not entitled to your opinion. You seem to feel you have a right to personally attack people because you simply disagree with them. I have given more then another reasons for why I think Justin is an asshole. If you disagree with that, then fine go right ahead but it makes you look childish to call other people's opinion stupid simply because you disagree. For the record, you haven't really supported your opinion either. All you have done is reverted to personal attacks and name calling.

Carousal, where did I ever say that you said I wasn't entitled to my opinion? Never. That is

not something I would say. The people who say "I'm entitled to my opinion" are usually the

ones who are trying to defend something completely stupid they've said. Chuck and stupid do

not mix. I have given you reasons why your opinions on this matter are vapid and inane. Y'

know, it's usually dumb people who can only defend their opinion by saying they have a right to

their opinion. Not once did you reply to my argument that Timberlake doesn't make poor imi-

tation R&B music and that he wasn't an R&B artist. You never answered my request for you to

tell us what "Real R&B music is" if you going to say someone is imitating it. I told you that Tim-

berlake making fun of Rihanna's mother and Prince have nothing to do with his music, and that

Prince made fun of other recording artists as well. You said nothing. And I've explained how it

is that a white boy fell in love with Black culture and happily makes music that is historically

Black without that music being bauble. But I also chastised Timberlake for using the word "ninja,"

and gave you reasons why. Don't say the only thing I've been doing in this thread is name

calling and attacking people personally.

Finally, you contradict your post ethics - you accuse me of personal attacks, while you call

Timberlake a douche, and you accuse me of name calling, while you call Timberlake an asshole.

You can't have your cake and eat it too, kiddo.

So, I'll ask you again:

You said Timberlake makes poor imitation R&B music. Well, what is real R&B music? How is

Timberlake's music a fakery and what makes real R&B music real? And don't list a bunch of

your favorite R&B artists as an explanation. I'm not asking you who R&B artists are. I'm asking

you what it is.

You said that Timberlake makes money off of Black music, as if he is doing so disingenuously.

Prove it. Show us how Timberlake has managed to pilfer and con the masses by passing off

his music as being "black." What is "black" music? Why is Timberlake not allowed to be

influenced by Black music.

And don't hide behind, "well, it's my opinion and I'm entitled to it." We know, dude. Now give

us reasons.

He has made a ton of inappropiate comments about black people but then wants to make his money off of black musi.
