Pam Sawyer's take on Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross' "My Mistake"

This was a FB post that I saw. It's interesting to hear what the writer's perspective is of the finished recording:

The second American single from the album of duets by Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye - 'Diana & Marvin' (1973) - was the aching 'My Mistake (Was To Love You)'. Structurally and rhythmically it echoed Marvin and Tammi's 1967 classic 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. Contagious, with its Motown-style arrangement, and a warm, relaxed harmonica interlude at the bridge of the song that injects a country feel, it also boasted strong performances from the singers. Diana's suitably refined vocal delivery blended beautifully with Marvin's more aggressive and forceful presentation. Originally this was intended to be the first extract from the project, but Berry Gordy held it back, instead preferring his own production, 'You're A Special Part Of Me'. Produced by Hal Davis, with songwriting credits by Pamela Sawyer and Gloria Jones (a renowned recording artist in her own right, most notably for the classic soul hit 'Tainted Love'), and an endearing arrangement courtesy of Dave Blomberg, this stunning ballad cracked the American chart at #19, climbing to #15 on the R&B listing. Yet once again in the UK it was ignored when released in October 1974.

  • Kelvin I pulled this album out on Monday and gave it a spin.
  • Pamela Sawyer Thankyou. for your kind words about My mistake but it was supposed to be a I person point of view. If they had , they the producers had had the courtesy to call us and say they were changing it to a duet we would have made the necessary adaptions and said something like no Marvin it was My mistake and visa versus as I hated not knowing whose mistake it was suppose to be and that was and still is my pet peeve abou producers we don't mind you changing or adding but let the writers make the changes it then needs. Sorry It is just one of those things that could make songs feel better when we are kept in the loop. I love both the artists but they were ping exactly as they were told. Thanks again anyway and if you listen again you will see what I am saying I believe. Love Pamx
  • Ian Hey that's an interesting story, Pam, and many thanks x
  • Pamela Sawyer You are welcome just trying to keep the record straight. The public don't know what writers and artists put up with. We are always eager often desperate to have the song cut and nine times out of ten when a producer says you won't recognize it, you don't and what is worse you don't want to. It hurts doubly when you are thrilled with the artist and then (some business guy / turned producer / and it is and has always been in my personal experience a guy.) You feel such duality, pleased to have a great artist doing it and annoyed and disappointed that it has lost the feeling you had and expected to hear. Well I must apologies for my rant but as I have said so often. Why bother to cut it if you did not like the feeling. Just last week someone cut a track and ruined it changed the tempo and everything else
Sooo another one hits the dust. I don't know how these people get their gigs. Thanks for listening Ian. Glad you like the little back stories . Love Pamx
