It's what I keep reading too. You don't always have to wail to get your vocals across. Janet is best at what she does. Her voice can be soft and subtle, or it can be tough. She adapts to the type of dance music SHE does, and does not have to be a Patti or a Mariah to do it. She also has some of the best background harmonies in pop/R&B. Listen to COME BACK TO ME and SOMEDAY IS TONIGHT, just to name two songs. "Get up off that grey line"

Hell she can just steal Blood Orange from Solange. Apparently she's on the outs with him, and they're both so indie and underground no one would realize it's a co-opt. >

Well tbh no one was on the level of MJ...to this day, I might add. Though I agree they were the Big Three.
As for Janet, she would never have become so huge were it not for the video age because she can't sing. But I guess same can be said about Madonna.

Nothing about that performance indicates that she's struggling.

Joe Jackson Pens Open Letter To Janet: ‘I’m Proud Of You’Janet, the youngest in the family is very very smart. She was more like a tough kid. She was real rough. I mean she was rough. What do they call them… yes … tomboy. She was a tomboy. She could whop all the girls. Really rough and really really smart. She is really easy nowadays. She has mellowed. She is now married and living a good life with her husband. I always felt that she was a natural when it came to acting. She did that movie, with the late Tupac Shakur. I thought it was a very good movie, and I was very proud of her performance. As great and known as a singer as she is, I think the world has yet to recognize her extremely great talent as an actress that surpasses her singing. She wants to have a good part in a strong action movie. I can’t wait to see her in one. She did surprise me once, picking me as her date to the premiere of the movie she did with Eddie Murphy. Now Eddie is a great friend and I consider him one of this generation’s greatest comedians, but right in the middle of watching the movie, as proud as I was of Janet, I never let her know that. She asked me what I thought and I remember telling her “You should be bigger than this. You should be the lead actor in the movie and carrying it”. I know the comment upset her, because she became quiet and I knew it. But i know her so well, that I knew she was going to channel that anger to prove that she could do better and was right. She came back even stronger with greater movies. And you have not seen the best of her yet. That’s my girl. When I suffered 4 strokes last year, and was in the hospital recovering, only two people in my family traveled all the way to see in the hospital. My granddaughter Brandi (Jackie’s daughter and my baby girl Janet. She sat right next to me as I lay in bed, spent time with me, talking about a lot together. It meant a lot to me. I lay there listening to her as she talked about how she was going to get married. I am happy for her and wish her nothing but the best ! I never tell you this, but I am proud of you Janet.
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Joe recently penned letters to everyone in the family, including Katherine. Love what he wrote about Janet there. "Get up off that grey line"

^^It may be that Joe is making peace with his loved ones because he may feel that at his age, the end is near. People tend to do that when they age, and realize that death is inevitable. It sad that it takes until then for some to say things that their loved ones wish they would have said before, but unfortunately, that's just the way some people are. [Edited 7/30/14 21:51pm]

if you're referring to me, i never said that she had to "catch up to" anyone. And she tries to sing live but......... I'm not sure how how Beyonce's career or anyone else benefits from someone else legacy but okay. surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water

I am not sure how people define a "good singer". There are a ton of good techical singers. You can pretty much find that anywhere. Hell I have that at my choir at my church! What makes a good singer however is their ability to convey emotion and connect with audiences which is something Beyonce has never been able to do unlike Janet who is a natural at it despite her limited vocals. While Janet is not a strong vocalist,I would much rather listen to her any day over a singer like Beyonce because she knows how to take you with her in a song. She knows how to become vunerable in a song and convinces me what she is singing she really believes. Not to mention, Janet is an artist while Beyonce appears to be just a "performer"
I thought Janet also did some questionable things after Michael's passing that were disappointing but there is no question she is an Icon and an artist that deserves more respect. I'd like to see her come out with at least one more album before she calls it quits.

It's always amused me how Janet fans cling for dear life to that Rosie performance as if it confirms anything. Getting quasi-lucky a few times at an attempt doesn't make you GOOD at it. Someone who sucks at bowling can get a strike or two after a bunch of gutterballs. Also and not to be rude but I never found that Rosie performance all that great so the stans who like to use it as some kind of confirmation of her "vocal talents," sorry but no sale this way. For all intents and purposes, Janet is Keith Sweats female counterpart in terms of singing. But even he had more talent when it came to writing and producing. "Janet Jackson is like an 80s sitcom that's been off the air for over 25 years; you see a rerun and realize it wasn't that great..."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think that's a great definition of a good singer.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And for someone who doesn't care for Janet and has the audacity to say that she is the equivalency of Keith Sweat (WTF?) or whatever other nonsense you're running off at the mouth about, you sure are spending a lot of time in a thread where she is the subject, flattering subject or not. You've already made your stance on the woman abundantly clear. Everything else is just trolling. So get the fuck out. "Get up off that grey line"

You've never heard of someone "paving the way" for another? It's an actual phrase, used when someone has broken down barriers for another, making the road to whatever "destiny" they desire a little smoother. A little easier. This is what Janet and artists like her did for Mrs. Carter. Beyonce has so much as said it herself (in interviews, on her HBO docu special, on Janet's MTV Icon show, etc.). Janet not only inspired her, but paved the way, which in turn means that she benefited from Janet's legacy. It's not a hard concept to understand, unless of course you're just trying to be combative. I don't really hear her struggling there, but I also don't hear any great vocals. Just passable, which is fine. Same goes for many singers. It counts against her though. She's a singer who is average at singing, at best.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I see what you're saying much more clearly now and yes I've heard of people "paving the way". I've never seen an interview with Beyonce giving praise to Janet but I'm not surprised. Like I said before, Janet had great songs that I and so many others enjoyed and I'm sure Beyonce was one of them. She paved the way, okay. I'm not trying to take any of that away from her. That wasn't really my point. The reasoning for my original post was Beyonce can sing. So Beyonce has room to grow and have a chance to release better songs. That was for the "Beyonce Bashing Bunch". surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water

Beyonce talks about MJ way more, but I distinctly remember her talking about janet on MTV in 2001 and looking up to her as a dancer/performer growing up, and saying no one in the industry hasn't been influenced by whitney, mariah or janet. Her bandmates also praised janet, with michelle saying she used to wear makeup like hers and dress up as her for halloween.
Also, janet tackled ballads beautifully in the 90's though she's had her moments too in tours after where she's out of breath and couldn't do it like before. If you're looking for whitney, mariah or hell, even beyonce in her, you've set yourself up for disappointment. If you want to enjoy how soothing, calm, pretty and emotional it is, you'll appreciate it more.

Escapade is a masterpiece. I dig a lot of her singles, the albums are ok. . You have to give her credit though, no other female artists of the time reached the intensity lyrically that she did, imo. Maybe do, just not like did before

. I never saw the appeal in Beyonce. Yeah she's beautiful, that's about it. Her voice grates on my nerves because it's so fucking obnoxious and overdone, and her songs just seem like typical plastic R&B songs that were done better by Mariah Carey 20 years ago. Plus her lyrics are stupid as hell... I can see why she and that talentless hack Jay-Z are married. . I'm also pretty sure Beyonce was inspired by Janet a lot, but i don't really see any reason for Janet to be inspired by Beyonce.. [Edited 7/31/14 21:56pm] Maybe do, just not like did before

She was, and she made a point in saying it on her HBO documentary, on Janet's MTV ICON special, in print and in interviews.
