Freda Payne/Band of Gold “I was still in New York when I connected with Brian Holland,” Payne recalls. “We had gone to high school together. And, Lamont and I spent three years in school as well…from the 6th grade to the 8th grade. We went to Hutchins Intermediate, where Aretha Franklin also attended school.” Having left Motown in 1969 over a royalties dispute, the trio decided to play with the big boys and compete with Boss Berry. Starting their recording venture Invictus/Hot Wax Records, they needed to find their own star and flew Freda into town to begin working on sessions. “They had their own recording studio, which was on Grand River Avenue,” she says. “Working with them was a wonderful experience, because I finally felt as though I was on the right track in terms of becoming more successful in the recording industry.”

I've always like the song "Band of Gold" and the lyrics are not hard to figure out, but I never actually got the "meaning" of the song. It sounds like erectile dysfunction?

I was a little kid when "Band Of Gold" was a hit, but as I got older I began 2 appreciate her Capitol albums, "Stares & Whispers" and "Supernatural High," even tho they're rooted in Disco, but hey...Soulmusic.com put 'em both out remastered and prior 2 that, I've had 2 endure years of snapping and popping on my turntable! She's a goddess really. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up. | |
