Why he isn't better known in the U.S. is criminal. The guy has vocal chops, is very good-looking, and is everything and more Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias or even Pitbull is... at least in Turkey and throughout Europe.

He's really handsome! I have no idea why we don't know about him in America. We still have a lot of cultural imperialism here.....the whole world knows our music but most Americans don't know about the rest of the world. Obviously, you can see on this thread that there are Americans who enjoy music from around the world but we're not the majority in the US lol

This is one of those absolutes to which I could never commit. There's Bjork's stuff. There's a ton of ancient chant I love. There's Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twin's glossolalia. The list goes on and on.

That said, "Pas le Temp" by French R&B band Native is definitely one I return to very often.

Thats a nice song. Ive never heard of them before but I think I might have to check them out now.

The cocteau twins are my favorite band ever. I didn't consider them for this thread though because I dont think Liz ever sang a full song in gaelic, if she did sing in a language it was in a heavily accented english. Most of her songs are portions of glossalalia with real words dashed here and there.

My favorite Bjork song in icelandic is Vísur Vatnsenda-Rósu.

The whole album that that's on (Chansons des mers froides by Hector Zazou) is great. It also has a great track by Siouxsie.

Change it one more time..

I can't post a spanish-language song because there's far too many from so many genres that I would be posting all day...so I'm posting a song that I love in another language that is one of my all-time favorites.

I believe it's in Senegalese? Or is it French? shrug

They're from Senegal so I assume it's their native tongue.

I like Serge a lot, but that's not even my favorite track on that album, much less my all-time favorite song of his. It's like saying "Purple Rain" is your favorite Prince song.

I discovered Mylene Farmer back in 2000 and on a visit to Paris I bought everything I could get my hands on!

Europop of the highest order, her song Plus Grandir has a very odd video...one of her other songs had a long form video directed by Luc Besson of 'The Fifth Element' fame. Big budget affairs!

Plus Grandir is hard to find, but fr those of you with iPhones here's a link:

Here's the Spanish version of a beautiful song by Marc Anothony, loosely translated it means "I Was So Blind". I can leave this on repeat all day!

IIRC the following are originally afghan folksongs.

This one i believe is originally a folksong of the iranian people living near the persian gulf.

lol Seems like you love yourself some Marc Anthony, huh SeventeenDayze?

These are my two favs from him;

Salsa

Cannot get enough of this song. Although - I wonder how he feels about it now that JLo up & left him!!! lol

Ballad

POWERFUL song. Love the emotional build-up and then at 2:45 - BAM! - you get the release.
And this gets me every time -

"...LUEGO vino la traición

Y cual si yo fuera un niño

me dijo que su cariño
lo brindaba a quien quisiera

éres otra bandolera

que jugo con mi querer.

Ya no creo más mentiras

ni en el llanto de mujeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer..."
bow

Both songs sound as fresh to me today as they did when I first heard them.

Oh yeah, I am craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy about Marc Anthony and Hasta Ayer is one of his best! I think between that song and Caminare those are my favorite ballads of his.Yeah I think about the irony of Valio la Pena now that he and JLo are split up! smile I wonder if he even performs that anymore! smile Marc Anthony is this generation's Hector Lavoe, sin dudas! smile

I like Marc's music, but Im not really into salsa that much. The little that I do listen to is either La India or Eddie Santiago.. And generally anything Willie Colon wrote (most of Hector Lavoe's stuff, Ruben Blades etc or his own work) I enjoy.

With Merengue Im a HUUUUGE Milly Quezada fan, and I also own just about everything from Sergio Vargas and Fernandito Villalona.

With bachata im a huge Raulin Rodriguez fan.

I can't really select a favorite from any of these guys though because I like the majority of their catalogs.

HOW could I forget about THIS?!?!?!?!?

This is "El Bajio" by Celia Cruz with Johnny Pacheco.

I heard this song for the first time back in college.

I searched for this damn song sor over a DECADE afterwards!!! I went to every Tower Records and Record World that I could find looking for it.

FINALLY when internet came along and file sharing, I found it via Beashare. (I'm dating myself big time here).

Love this song so much, I created a video and posted it to Youtube...

Sorry for my Marc Anothony binge but here's "El Cantante", first sung by Hecto Lavoe. The song is very insightful about the pain of being an entertainer. Look up the translated lyrics if you want to learn more....

I'll name for starters two songs in two different languages, French and German... they're not ENTIRELY foreign to me since I studied these languages in my teens and I actually remember these songs from that time...

First, the French song by Khaled (which also has parts in Arabic):

and the German song from Rammstein (just one of many good songs from that band):

and if I go for my native language which hardly anyone here can understand, Icelandic, there's SO many songs from me to choose from, but I go for just one that comes to mind right now...

this is a local classic from the early 90s (as you might guess by looking at the video), this is the type of song that you wouldn't understand the lyrics to unless you were fluent in the language, and even then you might still scratch your head listening to some of the lines lol - P.S. you might recognize the lead singer, who later joined the electronic pop band Gus Gus.

EDIT: I just HAD to add one recent Icelandic song, a reggae/dancehall song from Iceland (!) - THE summer hit here - just a party song about shaking booty and making out biggrin

There is another version of that song that you can find on Youtube but I could never find THAT one, so I was compelled to share it via Youtube myself.

There is something magical about that song IMO.
