Tove Lo - Habits I just heard this song last week on VH1, and I kept wondering what swear words they were blocking out, but apparently it was about getting high in order to cover up the pain of a lost relationship. But it's a cool song.

This is the kind of song that is a demonstration of white female privilege. I'm not trying to start a big conversation on race. I mean that. I'm just saying that if a black chick dropped a song like this with the same video as a new(ish) artist, she'd be called all kinds of sluts, whores, and so on and her career probably woouldn't get far unless she was extremely attractive. This chick is average looking and can get away with doing a video like this. Hell, Ke$ha pretty much did a more PG version of the same concept. Its just something that white women can get away with doing with less consequences than any other woman in American society. I get the song and the video and I'm not criticizing it. Its escapism. I'm just saying that its a perspective that white women are better accepted delivering. If a black woman did this she'd be a slut, hoe, skank, THOT, etc. If an Asian woman did it, she would be bringing shame to her family. If a North African/Muslim woman did it, she'd be stoned to death. If a Latina did it, she'd be a puta, chunga, etc When a white woman does it, she's a free spirit. I'm not hatin' - I'm just sayin'.

I'm surprised that someone with your mentality knows that many words...it's a SONG dude, not a social commentary. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I find it ironic that you imply stupidity while simultaneously suggesting that I examine the song with even more simplicity.
The song is very much a social commentary, just not the one i spoke on. Its a commentary on escapism. Chick's got a problem. She uses drugs and sex to escape from her pain. Furthermore, there is no resolve at the end of the video, which is a soft sell on okaying that behavior. They may as well have put "sponsored by Seagrams" at the end of the video. Essentially, thi is a softer version of "Smack My Bitch Up" only less violent and instead of the big reveal at the end, you know from the beginning that its a woman. However, I bet this video doesn't get boycotted by women's organizations. Whatever. Its "just a video" that will get played over and over and watched millions of times by impressionable youth online, right? Basically, this song is "Fuck The Pain Away" by Peaches with drugs and more detail. [Edited 7/22/14 4:22am]
