In Your Opinion, Who Is The Most Important Artist In History? Leave the critics aside.
You must've gone through some important & essential records in history from known and famous artists.. So who is the singer/band/artist whom you think is more essential to the music history than anybody you ever heard...? |

I'd say Miley Cyrus had more lyrical depth in her material, and she was a far better lyricist than any of her peers such as Katy Perry, Rihanna and Beyoncé, who are fairly regarded as important figures in lyricicsm & songwriting. |

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

It's a coin toss between Louis Armstrong (for jazz) & Robert Johnson (for the blues AND rock & roll). |

I'm gonna go with The First Lady of Song the Late Ms. Ella Fitzgerald...Her Strength & Endurance helped an entire Race, an entire species of Female singers and she changed the face of Music. There hasn't been another Singer to come along that Trumps her.. |

It's really a toss up between Lance Bass of NSYNC and Kevin Richardson of Backstreet Boys.

The Beatles, probably.
Yeah, a boring answer, but given their enormous popularity, huge influence on others and their stylistically diverse output they pretty much define what the word "music" means. They've done "black music" too, for that matter (or at least something that's very close to it and they were always very respectful towards their own influences).
Some people would be inclined to bring up someone like Mozart or Beethoven, but I believe in the grand scheme of things classical music doesn't really represent an "ideal" of what music has been about for centuries. It's such a niche form of expression in the end as most people even during the past centuries got exposed to entirely different type of music (pffft, most probably never got to hear a symphonic orchestra as it was mostly the elite that had an access to such things).

Never thought anyone would dare have the words "lyrical depth" and Miley Cyrus in the same sentence... In comparison to Beyonce she actually does, (not) surprisingly.
EDIT: Now that I think about it this question is really no different from asking who's the most influential artist in music history. [Edited 7/19/14 14:14pm] |
