Respect. I hope Sony does right by them and they have someone with a great business sense that will look out for them. These boys are driven not by fame and fortune but for the love of music. * Just have fun guys...and please stick with it.

Sony? Do right? Their first mistake was signing their future over to Sony. Good luck boys. And watch your back!

I'm very excited for them! but hope they're smart about this... with this being Sony and all. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

1.8 million? Obviously the age is the gimmick factor involved in it, because very few bands even slightly resembling metal would get a first deal like that. I've understood the guys are still playing instrumentals, so what are they goind to do to give the music more commercial appeal and sell some records? Add some pop hooks to it? I don't understand why their agent allowed the deal to go down at such an early age, when they haven't finished school.

- That was awesome! I wish them well. Their name is kind of corny though. Especially for a metal band.

Sony is going to push them to make as much money as fast as possible. I hope they have someone on their own team that cares more for their welfare than the business.
There's so many stories about people getting used up by the industry while they are in their prime, only to be left out in the cold when they are no longer a money maker. Being young is a gimmick that only works for a certain amount of time.
And a deal "worth" $1.8 mil does not mean 1.8 mil goes into their pockets. It makes me even more worried for their long term prospects, because that's a very hefty advance to repay. They will be in debt to the label forever unless they have a huge hit. Maybe they will be the first teenage African American metal band in history to have a huge hit. It would be great to see.
At least if they fail with the first album, they have three more years to get their diplomas.
Good luck dudes! | |

Deal had to be approved by an Adminstrative Law Judge...60K upfront bonus, rest comes with 250K benchmark for WW cd sale per/album

So if they never recoup the advance, band members earn $20,000 each. About what they would working part time at a Pizza Hut for a year.
Hey it ain't chicken feed especially for an 8th grader, but it kind of changes the perspective on a "$1.8 Million deal."
And how many albums sell in the hundreds of thousands anymore? That sounds like a contract straight out of 1992.

its a great deal.. little recoupment but huge exposure..they will make a killing playin live

How are they going to be selling a lot of records if they don't even have a lead singer?

Sign of the times, then.
Yeah well, they need to make back $1.8 million for the label first. I have to believe it's a 360 deal for that kind of coin.
I don't know, I'm a relic from another era. I am very suspicious of things that are not likely to pay off for the artist but are supposed to pay off in "other ways." We'll see how it goes.

Mariah and J-Lo are being reported as selling about 97K and 47K of their new albums, respectively, a few weeks after the release. So as long as these kids can outsell them both, combined, by almost twice as much, they're in a position to make another album.

NO they dont..those are payouts should they reach the 250K per album bechmark..they also have a 18% royalty rate which is damn high..nothgn at all wrong with this deal

It does sound like history in the making Not sure if a lead singer is in the works, though

Yes! We need more African-American metal bands. I hope those kids succeed.

Apaprently, these kids would make 1800/day when they setup shop in times sq

I wish them well | |

Guessing the current popularity of the band DEATH (and their story) had alot to do with the signing.

I first noticed this band when they played at Coachella. They are adorable.

Maybe Sony will hire Fergie from the BEP...then they can go "mainstream". Trolls be gone!

I can't imagine they'll make anywhere near that, signing to a major as an instrumental metal band. The possibility is incredibly slim. They shoulda kept on the streets and invested their own money into the band/album! The lure of those fake big numbers is hard to resist for many... Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

They know that they now owe Sony. All you others say Hell Yea!!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's true because isn't it considered to be an "advance" anyway that has to be repaid by the artist? This includes studio time as well, right? Are these kids now over a million dollars in debt? Do kids in these situations find themselves at risk for defaulting on this advance or are the parents the ones that might be on the receiving end on a raw deal? Trolls be gone!
