Queen ~ Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Elvis Presley)

Van Morrison ~ Brown Eyed Girl (Rolling Stones)

New Edition ~ Candy Girl (Jackson 5)

Gap Band ~ Burn Rubber (Stevie Wonder)

Guy ~ Groove Me (Gap Band)

Ready For The World ~ Oh Shiela (Jesse Johnson)

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Did you catch that performance last year when Stevie sang "Burn Rubber" at the Charlie Wilson tribute? It was awesome.

Hey, here's one of my favorites:
Led Zep's Whola Lotta Love was recorded by Muddy Waters as You Need Love and written by one of those forgotten heroes of rock 'n blues, Willie Dixon.

They used to play this a lot on the local oldies station and they never announced who it was. It sounded like Mick Jagger to me. I only found out who it was from some oldies but goodies compilation they were selling on a TV commercial. "Wait 6-8 weeks for delivery. No C.O.D.'s. Call now!" lol

The idea is not someone remaking a song, but that you thought a song was someone else, because it sounds like them. lol I thought Sweet Soul Music by Arthur Conley was Sam Cooke.

Okay, this is a bit of a shaky subject. I wouldn't want to feed all the old rockers who think Whole Lotta Love is a LZ original!

Thought Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" was just another Rihanna song at first. Also thought Stevie Wonder was the one who sang "She's a Bad Mama Jama" for the longest time.

Hey, there were even folks back in '65 who thought Otis did such a good version of Satisfaction that it couldn't possibly be a Mick & Keith song!

I still don't think you got it. It's not about who wrote a song or who recorded it first, but that you thought it was another singer or group. Otis doesn't sound like Mick Jagger to me. razz For example, listen to this song by Vince Everett (aka Marvin Benefield). Someone who didn't know who the artist was, would probably think the song is Elvis. Vince is a soundalike to Elvis like I thought Rescue Me was Aretha Franklin until I found out who it really was.

Oh yeah, that sounds a lot like Elvis no argument there. But I still don't think we're that far apart: if you've never heared about a certain artist (say Eric Donaldson) and you hear a band (say UB40) play something that sounds very much like them (say Cherry Oh Baby), then you think it's a UB40 song, right?

If UB40 remakes a song, then I suppose it would sound like UB40. UB40 is known for doing covers anyway, in a reggae style. But does UB40 sound like another group or the original song, that a person would think it's the other group? The Bar Kays have songs that sound similar to songs by other acts, but I can still hear it's Larry Dodson singing, so I wouldn't mistake them for the other group. Caribbean Queen sounds similar to Billie Jean, but Billy Ocean's voice does not sound like Michael Jackson's, so these would not count. Some people think El & Bobby DeBarge voices sound alike, so this would count. It's not about soundalike songs per se, but the actual singing sounds like someone else. I wouldn't have thought Groove Me was The Gap Band going by the music, but Aaron Hall singing like Charlie Wilson. When I first heard that, I was flipping through the stations and I heard what I thought was Charlie singing. I had never heard of Guy at the time.

An embarrassing one is I thought ABC's 'The Look Of Love' was sung by David Bowie. eek

.

My mother once thought 'Pamela' (by Toto) was a George Michael song.

.

On the subject of Elvis, I attributed both 'This Ol' House' (Shakin' Stevens) and 'Lonely This Christmas' (Mud) to Presley.

.

Briefly thought 'Nobody Knows' (Tony Rich Project) was a Babyface song.

.

As a child, I thought Tony Christie's 'Amarillo' was performed by Tom Jones. Around the same time, I was also surprised to learn that Engelbert Humperdinck's 'Release Me' was not a Tom Jones song.

.

And so on, and so forth.

I remember hearing a song in the 80's, but I never found out who sang it. When I got older, the only words that I could remember were, "Pass by, my man your plan...pass by" It sounded like Donna Summer in my head singing those words. Well, one day, I found the song. I can't remember how. I think on Youtube. It turns out, I had the melody right, but I was remembering the lyrics all wrong. The lyrics, actually, say, "Backfired my man, your plan". Well, I was kind of close. It was Blondie, instead of Donna Summer. I should have known it wasn't Donna Summer, because, as a huge fan, I would have found tha song by now:)

Carosuel by some one hit wonder white boy band in 2000-I originally thought it was Usher

My Love Is the Shhh-Something for the People-originally thought it was SWV when I heard the female voices

Because of You-Cover Girls, originally thought of Madonna

I'm pretty sure I heard a Charlie Wilson song years ago and thought of Stevie Wonder at first

Did the same with Anthony Hamilton and R.Kelly

In My Dreams-Darkness...thought it was Real McCoy doing a remix to their hit Another Night

Hit Em Up Style-Blu Cantrell...thought it was Faith Evans when first hearing it

Oh, I get this embarrassingly often when I listen to songs by these two ladies. I say embarrassing, because I own Blu's Bittersweet album. I don't own a Faith Evans album, but I often listen to 'Love Like This', and I really like her new single with Missy. A Blu song like 'Impatient' will come on, and I'll go "always good to be listening to some Faith ". confused

"Tell Me What's On Your Mind" by Information Society, I was sure was the new Duran Duran single for at least 2 weeks.

And when I heard "My Sharona" on the radio the first time I thought it was Devo. I'd only heard their first album and thought it sounded like a more commercial "uncontrollable Urge."

And that 90s band Sponge always sounded like Social Distortion to me. I'm still not sure which songs are theirs and which are SD's.

I once had a really long conversation with a guy who could not be convinced that Scott Weiland and Eddie Vedder were not the same person.

"Such a Night" is a popular song from 1953, written by Lincoln Chase and first recorded by The Drifters.

The Drifters' original version, featuring Clyde McPhatter, was recorded in November 1953 and released in January 1954. Despite being banned by some radio stations as too "racy", it reached number 2 on the American R&B chart in 1954.[1]

The song also became a hit single for Johnnie Ray, whose cover version reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in 1954.[2] Ray's version entered the US Cash Box chart on 27 March 1954, peaking at No. 18 two weeks later on 10 April.

Elvis Presley also recorded the song and released it on his 1960 album Elvis Is Back. Presley's version made number 13 in the UK and number 16 in the US, when released as a single in 1964.

The Four Lovers released their version of the song in 1956. The Four Lovers later became known as The Four Seasons.
