This doesn't mean they were popular as a Top 40 pop act themselves. Johnnie Taylor had a couple of pop Top 10 hits: Disco Lady & Who's Making Love and he had a few others that hit the Top 40. But he was mostly popular with the R&B audience and this is where most of his hits were. He's not a household name with the mainstream.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

dude take it from someone who grew up in that era, johnnie taylor was not just big in the r&b crowed he was big with everybody. he was on all the top shows, plus he was played on am and fm radio.

He was not. His main audience was black. He was dropped from Columbia Records around 1980 after A New Day album because they couldn't get another pop hit like Disco Lady. His later career was on Malaco. Malaco did not have mainstream media attention. it's kinda odd how the classic line-up of Shalamar (Howard,Jody,Jeffrey) split up just when they began to crossover."Dead Giveaway" gave them alot of exposure to pop fans. The video was added to MTV at a time when many R&B acts weren't shown on that channel.Makes you wonder what could have happened if they had stayed together a few more years.Howard tried to continue the group with two new members, but their 1984 Heartbreak album was a flop.

Mickey you are being like a spoiled brat who has to be right. Let it go SHALAMAR is a household name in the Urban R&B community that stills gets spins to this day on radio and Sirus/XM. They where not a POP act, yes they had a few selections that made the POP HOT 100, but their base is R&B/SOUL. #DEALWITHIT.
and JOHNNY TAYLOR has nothing to do with the topic.

That's what I've said all along that Shalamar were mainly popular with the R&B audience and not the pop one. It wasn't me who said that Shalamar & Johnnie were popular with everybody. Her ego is waaayy outta control...She needs to check herself..I love Shalamar, but it was also about Howard and Jeffrey as well...Why haven't she came out with a CD, videos and such..She needs to go back to the basics ....If She can go that route...Her ego trippin has caused her to loose some of her fan base from what I can see...Okay then don't have a Shalamar reunion.

Without a doubt, Shalamar was a household name in the R&B community during their time. I don't think anybody who was into R&B at the time they were popular would question this. I guess Jody's anger means more to her than money. I understand having principles and I respect that. If it means so much to her that she is willing to disassociate herself from a former project then so be it. Money ain't everything...but it sure buys a lot of shit!

She has the Best New Artist Grammy curse, but hell; Shalamar is better than 99% of the "r&b" on radio today (yes i sound old and i have no fucks to give) - so someone has to be Elvis Presley level of fame to express themselves I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Home run! They were one of the top R&B acts in the early eighties. They dominated r&b radio. Hell my high school jazz band used to play Somewhere There's a Love. Who gives a shit whether they were top pop act or not. The folks I grew up with sure as hell didn't care. We jammed the hell out of Shalamar. Every black household in the neighborhood jammed their records. Don't laugh at my funk

How about a full Shalamar reunion with all the renditions? Gerald, Jody, Jeffrey; Jody, Jeffrey & Howard; Howard, Micki Free & Delisa Davis; Micki Free, Delisa Davis & Sidney Justin - now that would be hot and rep each hit with most concentration on the lineup that Watley referred to as 'classic Shalamar'. Again?
The members of Shalamar don't care for one another.... there' is not a snow ball chance in Hell they'll ever reunite. Is Jody ego trippen? A bit, but as much violence that went down between those 3, did anyone think Ms.Watley would ever forget that shit? Ms. Watley doesn't need to do a reunion but Howard and Jeffery do. Don't think sista girl don't know this. Every couple years when this reunion stuff comes up, its the same drama and long ass explanations from Ms,. Watley.
Howy & Jeff,...
I'd agreed to whatever Jody wants to do and run thangs; lick her boots, kiss her ass, and maybe just maybe, Hell will freeze over ONCE.

: True!
An open letter to Howy and Jeff, don't demand shit... are you really in that type of postition. HELL NO. Give her whatever she wants and then if she says no.... This is how we know she is holding things up!
Maybe just maybe the three of them should have fessed-up to the bullshit, harm, and violence they caused one another. If Howard and jeffery had told the truth and aplologized years ago maybe things would have turn out differently. Walty was hurt and scared by her experience when she was a member of that group, it ain't happen'.
Hell I wanted The Supremes to reunited too, look how that turned out.

I'm sorry but when I think of Shalimar the first name that comes to mind is Howard Hewitt... Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

yeah,I heard that Jeffrey was particularly violent he was even abusing his then-wife,Stephanie Mills, when they were married.

babynoz said: I'm sorry but when I think of Shalimar the first name that comes to mind is Howard Hewitt I agree here. Jody's vocals just happened to compliment Howard's well more so as a background singer as part of Shalimar. Not saying she wasn't capable of singing lead on a few more songs but Howard was clearly the star of the group and it has nothing to do with Jody's accomplishments as a solo artist. Let's put it this way Shalimar will work a hell of a lot better with Howard, Jeffrey, and Carolyn versus Jody,Jeffrey, and the Brown guy. You have no Shalimar without Howard period. Your last sentence is hilarious because I couldn't make it through that chicken scratch either. Don't laugh at my funk

A few years after they got back together in 1994, Don Felder was fired though, and he sued. Other than that, they've been together ever since, which is longer than they were originally together. I was kinda more surprised by The Police doing a tour and Diamond Dave rejoining Van Halen (or that Dave & Sammy Hagar did a tour together ). Unlike The Eagles & Van Halen, The Police didn't record anything. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. It's sad when, for various reasons, groups can't reunite.Remember in 2000 when Diana Ross planned that Supremes reunion tour? They had a disagreement over money,Mary Wilson backed out of it and Diana hired two "fake" Supremes to tour with her.Of course, the tour flopped and it was cancelled after just a few shows
but I remember something that Diana said at the same."We're not getting any younger, you know.If we don't do this reunion tour now,we may not be able to do it in the future".
just something to think about

dick griffney was the reason for the chaos that the group has had. he is no longer with us, so they can get together and make it happen. it will take a skill person to put them together.
