I see your point, I like Pharrell, he's a good producer and all that.. but he sounds just dated now, these tracks all sound like some leftovers from the Justified album by JT, or something he done back in the day when he used to be "NERD".. Ed Sheeran even got into it also and his single is made of the same formula.. Where's the uniqueness in that? Pharrell can do much better... It's just this whole disco/funk sound he's making is just dated, just like Timbaland.

He's been hanging around JT and Robin Thicke too much, and gave them so much soul in their music there was none left for his own! It's bad enough JT and Robin Thicke already sound alike vocally, but then you have the same guy doing the same music for both of them, which is better than his own. I wish Pharrell would do more with the sound he created on Kenna's album, because THAT WAS MY SHIT!
Brand New is still my favorite song from what I've heard off the album and Gust of Wind is one of the songs I've heard. This song however sounds like funk-lite, it has no weight to it and honestly, Miley's excerpt was the best part besides the guitar riff. This song is completely neutral.
I love me some funk and I'll be one of the first to advocate for the genre making a comeback but this is not the way to achieve it.
Why is that, when someone becomes really successful, people say that they "sold out"? Pharrell didn't sellout. He's still making great music, like he always did.The difference is that, his audience is expanding.More and more people are liking what they hear from him. That's not "selling out".
Because he sold out his individual artistic integrity to appeal to the masses.
Case in point. When this:
Became this:
They sold out. Pharrell is "safe" now. I don't do "safe" music, but that's just me. Not trying to step on toes or anything.

Yeah Fergie was done simply for marketing purposes. She's a hack. No offense to Fergie fans.
As far as Pharrell being safe, he's not exactly safe on that Move that Dope song lol

Lol the only fans Fergie has are the ones in the window at her house. Of course Pharrell is going to put that one track on there for street cred. That's the formula now. Shit, Katy Perry even did it.

Stark contrast between that song and Happy You made some good points about Timberlake and Robin Thicke using Pharrell's ad nauseum. That's another reason why I'm not a big fan of Timberlake is because he's awful but has enough smoke and mirrors around him to entertain the masses. There is something so phony about that dude I just don't know where to start.
I don't think Pharrell thinks much about street cred. He's the hottest producer in the game right now so his place in hip-hop history is firmly planted.

I believe that honor would go to this guy:
...and you're right about JT. I don't trust that motherfucker. I wouldn't blink in front of him. Maybe he killed somebody before or something, IDK...

Who is the guy in the photo? LOL@Timberlake killed someone maybe Yeah he seems fake. Someone here posted a video of him trying to dance once and it was horrible. I think Pharrell and others are getting paid big bucks to help swagger jackers like Justin and Robin steal a sound and then act like it's theirs. This is why I don't understand how the other person said that Pharrell sucked and that Timbaland was a has-been but then laid all this hype on JT in another thread. That makes no damn sense whatsoever. How do you throw the originators and producers of that dude's sound under the bus but the singer gets all the credit for being the person upholding R&B????

GTFOH with that!
That's Mike Will
Ugh...When NSYNC came out with that Dirty Pop video, JT did some corny beat-boxing bullshit at the end of it. Then on the VMA's I believe, or some kind of interview, he told the interviewer that the beat-boxing was just something he came up with on the spot. Now, that is very ambiguous, because I didn't know if he meant it wasn't planned for the video and he improvised it, or that he came up with the idea of beat-boxing himself...

That was my first guess that it was Mike Will but I thought MW was dark-skinned for some reason. This guy is even working with Miley these days.....things change
As far as Timberfake goes, he probably meant in that moment or he could have been attempting to swagger jack, which is what he does anyway

I was thoroughly bored by this album. I played it once and I haven't had any desire to play it again. I agree with Scarlet that his earlier stuff just sounded fresher. This album sounded like a rehash of tracks he's done a 1000x for everyone under the sun in the music business. Not knocking anyone that likes it.. I guess its just not for me.

I can see how you'd be tired of it, especially if you're familiar with his earlier work. I guess part of the problem with producing is that you make everyone else famous with your sound and by the time you try to launch your own music career (in the forefront) people have already heard it for a decade or so.
I guess the reason I like it is that it's not too hardcore and is a bit quirky. I was surprised at the duets with Miley Cyrus though. That seemed to be a deliberate attempt to be "mainstream". But, I think Pharrell is cool and look forward to his next few projects.

Sometimes even the best can get stuck in a rut
I would like to see him work with some foreign or non-mainstream artists. Maybe he needs to change his camp around a bit to get that new sound. But then, I need to stop expecting everybody to do what Prince does lol

It's a shame that a Prince and Pharrell random studio session will never happen in this lifetime, I'm sure it would be intresting And yes, everyone can't be Prince We are spoiled to have someone that changed/changes up his sound from one album to the next, one song to the next.

I know. Us Prince fans are soooooooooooo spoiled lol
When JT's "Like I Love You" came out, Pharrells said (about his production) That it "sounds like something Prince would come up with in a jam session."

Le no, Pharrell.
Yeah it seems that Pharrell deliberately tried to duplicate MJ and Prince on a few tracks. Blatant copying without adding anything new to the table (on Timberlake's part). Although I think he is not as involved in the finished produce, I do think Justin DOES make it clear that he wants to sound like MJ and Prince, better believe that.
As far as Prince's sound goes, that's why I don't get mad if the sheeple that want just the "hits" miss out on the rest of his music. They have no idea what they are missing. How many times have I listened to the 2002 live version of Joy in Repetition?

I know! When I tell people I'm a fan of Prince, they say something like "Oh Really? I LOVE Kiss and Little Red Corvette!!" and I'm like
LOL that's a funny picture I guess that's the curse of just about every artist except Prince. Everyone wants their artist to stay the same while most of us Prince fans expect him to change. He saves the best, weird stuff for us. I said it before and will say it again, Prince fell into stardom already a superstar, he wasn't "made" a superstar. Big difference.
But, back on topic, I think Pharrell might be feeling pressure from execs to keep a similar sound. Who knows? I do'nt really know how the pecking order works in the industry. I think Pharrells success with some of his mainstream stuff may have been a curse at the same time.
i'M DYIIIIIIIIIIING for Pharell to work on a rock album.
This! i liked this album & the N.E.R.D album as well. Pharell could make a killer rock album. But who am i kidding... if he did a ''rock album'' the way he is now. It would sound like moron 5 or some shit
Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener
All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

I'm gonna start spelling Maroon 5 as Moron 5 because that's a more appropriate name. Thanks for the idea I'll check out the track you guys just posted here. Has Pharrell done any other rock tracks?

I don't know if this counts. I LOVE Pharrell's style of rock
I couldn't stand this song when it came out, because it was up everybody's ass, but I can appreciate it now
Lol just get the "In Search Of" album, before I post the whole thing. Better than anything on that "Girl" shit.
