I was 11 this year and discovered Terence Trent D'arby, hence the high rating of his first album.

.

1. Sign o the Times - Prince (Seriously this outpaces everything in this year, and it is a fine album), probably best album of the 80s too.

2. The Joshua Tree - U2 One of my favourites and one of their finest and most raw.

3. Introducing the Hardline according to TTD - TTD, again a very fine record that introduces his versatility along with some very unforgettable pop songs.

4. Bad - Michael Jackson, fxxk you all, this is a great album

5. Tango in the Night - Fleetwood Mac, a very good comeback and very relevant sounding

6. Whitney - Whitney Houston, a very good album with some great pop and ballads (Although Love is a contact sport is less good)

7. Faith - George Michael - Despite the commercial success, probably his best album, its free of most of the loopy self indulgence and patchiness of his later material.

8. Appetite for Destruction - Guns and Roses - Although I am not a huge fan of hard rock, the quality of this album is very high, with some great rocking songs and catchy singles. The finest of all the late 80s hair metal groups.

9. Uplift Mofo Party Plan - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Their best album to date (Their 3rd) has great songs like Fight life a brave and the hidden Party on your pussy. Way before they became commercial and some amazing punk funk.

10. Jill Jones - Jill Jones - Yes a Paisley release makes the chart, some amazing pop songs here, Mia Bocca, All day all night, G spot - wow

.

.

Worst albums of 87

1. Never let me down - David Bowie (I mean what the honest fuck)

2. Dinner with Gershwin - Donna Summer (Rumour has it even his ghost was a no show here)

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I originally was going to put Invisible Touch instead, but it came out in 1986. There were still singles being released from the LP in 87 though.

Part of the reason why I put my list up. Everyone here is either hardcore Rap/Rand B or hardcore Alternative/Metal, hence why I know my taste in mostly Pop and Rock would get a different list.

.

Unlike everyone else so far, I just feel that Sign of the Times is a great album full of classic and high quality songs.

I love the Chili Peppers

The first album I ever bought was "Californication" becaused I loved "Scar Tissue"

but after listening to that album I have bought all their music ever since and also all their old stuff

They really are an awesome band

Love you "RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS"

I can't seem to understand why they nominated Dolly Parton's Trio album to ALBUM OF THE YEAR prize ignoring masterpieces such as Strangeways Here We Come or TTD's Introducing The Hardline.

You must be one of those people who don't realize how popular country music is (and was) in the US, especially in the "heartland". That's why Farm Aid tended to have country acts or heartland rock like Bob Seger & John Cougar Mellencamp.Trio was a big deal at the time and so was Linda Ronstadt, particularly after What's New. I think Dolly's variety show was on at the time too. The Smiths were not popular mainstream, I never heard them on the radio. The people who were listening to them were the goth kids who didn't like Top 40 and liked to brag they were listening to underground music. lol

Not sure I can pick 10... For example Whitney is a terrible album compared to her 1st and 3rd LPs, only the first and the fourth singles are good songs, the rest is pure filler. Bad has a lot of great songs but as an album it never worked for me, some of it is incredibly dated. Tunnel Of Love is a major disappointment after Born In The USA, never got into it.

Of course Appetite For Destruction, Sign 'O' The Times, Nothing Like The Sun & Faith are all amazing records from that year! I also happen to enjoy David Bowie's much-maligned Never Let Me Down.

I am really surprised at where SOTT fell on many lists here. Tops is and remains, IMO,

Prince -- Sign O' The Times

The rest, mostly favorites but a few whose impact I can't deny, in rough order --

Eric B & Rakim -- Paid In Full (all it did was help define hip-hop for a generation or more)

Terence Trent D'Arby -- Introducing The Hardline . . .

The Cure -- Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

LL Cool J -- Bigger and Deffer

Michael Jackson -- Bad

Wendy & Lisa -- Wendy & Lisa

George Michael -- Faith

REM -- Document

Guns N' Roses -- Appetite For Destruction

I never cared much for the songs "Slow Love", "Forever In My Life", "Strange Relationship" and "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man". I was surprised that last one was released as a single and hit the top ten in the U.S. The albums ahead of Sign O The Times on my list I liked more consistently.

Cool list cool

I nearly forgot about that Cool J album, I had it when I was at High School and loved it to death, his rhymes were right on point.

.

"Instead of whining and talkin ill about me, why don't you take yo monkey ass and get a college degree" "When youre 73 years old and people asked you what you did with your life, You say I hated LL and I carried a big knife"

.

Then there's the Bristol Hotel "Bang bang boogie, she was so immune, I saw her at the clinic getting blood transfused"

.

Back i the days when I loved rap. Ice T's Rhyme Pays is no where near as good, Colors is alright, but the rest is average, his 1988 and 1989 albums (Power and Iceberg) are much better.

.

Rap in the 80s was great before all this gangsta and bling bling gees up hos down shit arrived. Ice T and LL never rapped about drinking Cristal or doing Ice, both thought drugs were wack.

.

Remember back in 87, everything was dope or wack?

That was my first reaction, but I totally respect your opinion and those expressed on this board. There are very broad musical palates on the org and I must admit that I still need to explore many of the albums listed here.

Thanks, and I agree. Especially on Ice-T. There was dopeness and wackness, then Eazy drops "Boyz In The Hood" in '87 (as East Coast heads pointed out to me later, a dead ringer in style and flow to Schooly D's "P.S.K.") and a new era was upon us . . .
