'Twas he who put together the controversial but big-selling posthumous Jimi Hendrix albums 'Crash Landing' and'Midnight Lightning' in the 70s and later 'Voodoo Soup' in the 90s, the latter an attempt to reconstruct the final album Hendrix was working on, before Jimi's estate released a similar record called 'First Rays of the New Rising Sun'.
All of the above albums brought in new players and newly recorded music parts unknown to Hendrix, to a greater of lesser degree, to allegedly 'finish' the tracks, especially the 70s records.
He was also a noted producer of jazz records, perhaps most notably bringing together Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach for the classic collaborative album 'Money Jungle' in 1962.
Douglas also produced John McLaughlin's jazz rock album 'Devotion' in 1970, which featured Hendrix alumni Buddy Miles and Billy Rich and the track 'Doriella du Fontaine', which featured Hendrix and Buddy Miles collaborating with members of noted rap pioneers The Last Poets in 1970. The latter track is sometimes seen as an important step in the development of hip hop. | |
