Winner by a land-slide!!!! Just because your mommie and daddy say you're a great singer doesn't make it the truth.
I was watching something about JLO recently and it dawned on me that Beyonce completely swagger jacked JLO. I heard a long time ago that she was even using JLO's stylist and was quoted in a magazine saying she wished she were Latina.
This chick is overexposed, overrated and seems insecure about just going the hell away for a few years and spare the public of having her shoved down our throats.
Why doesn't anyone call her out about her plastic surgery, blonde weave, liposuction and skin bleaching? (This also applies to Rhianna too)
It's amazing. Not that I pay that much attention, but I can't recall the media ever uttering a negative word about her. Everything she does, they just eat it up! It's like she's controlling the media, too. For a Disco singer, she has been extremely luckey!

I remember seeing something online that sad that Mary J. Blige gets away with singing off key because she connects to people really well and it somehow still fits in the song I think she found her target audience very quickly and hasn't deviated much from that....save the times she sang with Sting and a few others.
Oops, I just now saw your edited post and it made me laugh Yes, perhaps she's more of an entertainer than a great singer. I wonder if she's ever sung the National Anthem at all. That's always a good litmus test if a person can sing or not
[Edited 6/22/14 15:03pm]
Obviously she is not the best technical singer but she does have a great voice.
And yes she sung the National Anthem and she did good :
Adorecream said: Bad =/= overrated. None of those people are praised nearly enough if at all to be considered overrated. People who receive mostly high praise and critical acclaim like The Beatles, MJ, Prince, Madonna, Phil Collins, Drake, Beyonce, Jay Z, Kane West, etc., etc. can be construed as overrated since overall their works are largely viewed as critically flawless and to a less relevant extent, extremely popular; especially the former stars. The likes of Ke$ha, Ylvis, Maroon 5, and Rebecca Black of all people can't be overrated since nobody holds them in any sort of high regard to begin with. [Edited 6/25/14 8:52am]
Well, what about new artists that seem to get lots of exposure? I've always wondered how some people can just remain around for a long time despite mediocre output. Maybe there's stuff that goes on behind the scenes in the music industry that makes it this way.
Maroon 5 probably gets too much credibility more than they get critical acclaim at this point. Now, in 20 years, some idiot might compare them to the Rolling Stones or something, then we can get the pitchforks out at that point.....
I guess those can qualify as overrated if we're looking at what the industry expects them to be. I hate how a lot of new artists get overhyped and overpushed with little to no musical credentials to justify it; they all end up looking the same in addition to the type of music they produce that infests the charts these days.
I don't hear good things about Maroon 5 at all. Then again, people somehow think "Moves like Jagger" is an iconic/ good song... to me it's just more catchy pop filler that's been played to death for many months just so people can't forget it and I guess brainwash them into thinking it has any lasting impact whatsoever.

It got to the point where I think I was having allergic reactions when I would hear that stupid whistle introduction to that song. I was also getting annoyed with people who would overreact when that stupid song would come on. Mindless drivel, to say the least. No offense to anyone here that likes that song but if I never hear that song again in my life I'm sure it will add 10 years to my lifespan...

I've heard that she's got a PR machine that's gone out of their way to paint her a certain way. But, I've also heard that in reality she's nothing like the squeaky clean person she tries to portray herself as. She rips off a lot of other artists including Shakira and Lady Gaga. I think she follows trends and her pimpish husband doesn't help either. Maybe he's just using her for publicity. How many other rappers have had a career well after their late 30s into their mid 40s? I saw a comedy skit one time that was making fun of JayZ as simply trying to stay relevant and he floated from singer to singer to be relevant. It was funny.
Who is saying Beyonce can't sing? Besides being sexy, that's all she has although there are people who are better vocalists than her.

Jay Z doesn't need Beyonce to stay relevant, he just needs to keep dropping an occasional LP mixed in with his more regular guest verses and investing money in other ventures. He's a media star and was one since before marrying Beyonce, he's just even bigger now. Beyonce's just the icing on the cake if anything.
i think the stone roses are the most over rated act of all time ,here in the uk theyve been going on
about them for the past twenty odd years like theyre the saviours of the british music industry.
like a lot of people in the pop business they are laughing all the way to the bank.
Oh I totally agree. There was some film documentary about their comeback gigs last year and I was listening to people talk about them as if they had some major pop culture influence over the last 25 years. I barely remember them. They have like 2 songs you'll ever hear on the radio if that. Apart from Ian Brown no-one on the street could even name any of the other members. What is it with that scene that makes people in it completely deluded over its importance in music history?
Of course Beyonce can sing. So can Rhianna. So can Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and Yoko Ono. Anyone who is recording music (other than hip-hop) can obviously sing. Doesn't mean they can sing well. But, they can sing.

Agreed. She's the product of marketing and hair color and blablablabla lol
The weird thing about Chris Brown is that when he sings, he sounds like he's only singing half the note or something. It's like he always sounds winded in all of his songs, and I don't mean the live ones, I mean the studio songs. He's a better dancer than singer but his dancing skills aren't on MJ's level even though he's tried to convince th public that he is.
The only person alive that can do MJ justice with dancing is Alfonso Ribero, also known as "Carlton"...
Let's add to the list the teenage boy who just got an offer from Warner Bros. for a 4-album deal. I heard a sample of his music and didn't see what the big deal was. They are giving him an advance of $182k and if they "like" his first album, he'll keep recording and get royalties. I hope he reads the fine print and checks to see if WB might charge him studio fees, etc. and not pay him anymore until there's a return on their investment.
Led Zep are overrated indeed, most of their material is stolen, and their fame is just because of their image "the perfect rock band" at the early 70s.... Jimmy Page is a great guitarist but sucks live...
The Beatles are not overrated in my opinion, all their albums, all what they did was something that contributed big time in music buisness.
Bob Marley is overrated, his music is good and all, but he's not the best reggae artist of all time, he was the reason reggae music is even famous, but that doesn't mean he's the best at it, and all the world doesnt see that.
The Beatles are just about unanimously regarded as the best musical act ever, and some of their fans are obnoxiously insistent that any other opinion is tantamout to heresy. There's not a single song that I come close to liking by them, despite having heard a good 50+. While I would never suggest that their music has no value, when they are time and time again touted as the greatest ever, I find it hard to think they could be anything BUT overrated. I'm not sure that any artist deserves that type of adulation.
This right here is the problem with these threads. It has nothing to do with you Moonbeam, I just find these types of threads to be banal. All you get are a million different opinions on a topic that can't be objectively measured. What's the point?

So, if we get to the point that we cannot truly measure good music and have to completely rely on the awards shows to tell us who is great, we are in trouble. Trust me, I totally get what you are saying but I think sometimes it's good to call out mediocrity. I mean, this is why people file lawsuits when their songs get stolen and fight for their ownership as artists. The main point is that this is called the music industry for a reason. We have to be able to recognize which artists are just the result of some slick marketing or true geniuses that we all were happy to see them rise to the top. Of course, Prince is the best example of this. His success isn't due to slick marketing at all. I remember seeing a thread here a long time ago asking if Prince were dark-skinned would he be successful. I think either way, he would have been a superstar because his sound was very unique for the times (especially his mid-80s output through present day). I think he bucked the system and somehow managed to navigate it very well at the same time.
Okay folks add Justin Bieber to my list. It seems like "Migos" is/are very forgiving because they are in a studio with Justin Bieber who does a shout out to World Star. If this isn't a sad example of what hip-hop has come to, I don't know what is. Remember, Migos was implicated in a shooting just a few days ago where 1-2 people died and Bieber is just fresh off his N-word video scandals....am I missing something or is hip-hop officially dead now?
Beyond a shaddow of a doubt, Michael Jackson tops the list.
Also, a few notable mentions:
1. Mary J. Blige
2. Lil Kim (I know she doesn't sing, but....)
3. Radiohead
4. U2
5. REM
6. Beyonce
7. Ani DiFranco
8. The Beatles
Tell us some more about why you think U2 and the Beatles are overrated. Thanks!
I'll at least say about The Beatles that some people, especially of my parents' generation seriously think they are the be and end all of music. Some even refuse to admit that they had any influences in black music. My own mother won't accept that they dined out on covers for a good proportion of their early career. Nothing wrong with that at all, but when they flat out REFUSE to acknowledge that maybe, possibly, in any slightest way someone else could have done it better, there's no arguing.
A lot of people also refuse to admit that Paul McCartney hasn't recorded a decent album in over 30 years. Plus in the UK we have the American DJ/media personality Paul Gambaccini. He's pretty much your go-to guy to wheel on for the news any time a muscian dies and he will without fail, no matter how irrelevant to the subject, find some way or another to shoe-horn Paul McCartney's "genius" into the conversation.

I think we can agree that some artists are less gifted than others! But in this thread I've seen people bash The Beatles & Michael Jackson. Now people are well within their right to dislike them, but I think people shouldn't go too far in the opposite direction by completely bashing them. It seems ostentatious.
I personally think there's no way of measuring truly great music. The best method is probably just the general opinion of the public, as it allows us to create a general consensus of who can be considered the best. As troublesome as it seems, it may be our only option for truly measuring greatness.
EDIT: And for the last paragraph, I mean after some years in the future, so we see who has been remembered.

I guess this is like trying to figure out who is the best boxer of all time. Most say it's Ali and rightfully so but it's hard to compare athletes from one generation to the next because it depends on their competition. Another issue to consider is how corrupt boxing is generally considered to be for the past few generations. Outcomes can be rigged and I think this might be true in the music business as well. But, we can just go off our feelings and the feelings of other fans who feel that the artist is the best.
I have a lot of respect for the Beatles but I feel more passionate about MJ.
