That was the most somber and bluest version of the song I've ever heard, and to here it on the day of his passing makes me tear up. I'm saddend first by the fact that I'm not familiar with his work but I'm going to hopefully fix that soon enough. Be at peace and rest kind soul, your treasures endure forever.

EddieC

I'm only familiar with his voice from an appearance on Lou Reed's song "Power and Glory" from Magic and Loss. It was an incredible sound. I think I might have seen him perform it live on something with Reed.

I should listen to him some more. That voice was truly remarkable.

AWESOME!!! I remember back in 1997 going to Cambridge (Boston) to Cheapo Records in search of some Nancy Wilson albums (which are finally on CD thanks to David Nathan's Soul Music Records) and Al, the owner, handing me a cassette of Jimmy's entitled, "Dream." I had previously never heard OF or anything BY him, so I brought the cassette home with me and just tossed it into a box of cassettes I had where I was in the midst of moving.

When I made it to my new crib, the first box I unpacked was the box of cassettes cuz all my CD's were buried in the pile of other boxes and I had 2 have some music 2 work with while I unpacked and cleaned. I popped Jimmy Scott into the tape player and hit play and went about my business and was alarmed by what sounded like a woman's voice coming from the other room. I thought that perhaps I turned on the radio instead, so I walked back to my boombox. It was still set on the "cassette" setting and the little wheels were turning, so I was like...WTF???!!! I called Al back at Cheapo Records and he informed me of the unmatched uniqueness of Scott's voice and how it had never changed since puberty! I was both astonished and delighted all at the same time and within the next couple of months, went on a quest to find as many of his CD's as I could! Been hooked ever SINCE!!! The man's voice is a WONDER and I can't think of ANYONE other than maybe Shirley Horn, who can take a melody and stretch it in all kinds of directions at once! Just wanted 2 share my introduction to this overlooked vocal WONDER! Hope every-1 has a great day and will go out and check out some titles from his lengthly and incredible repertoire! smile

^^Nice story. I got a chance to see him at Tavern In The Green In NY in the 90's when a friend told me he's always wanted to see him. I had never heard of him, but I wanted to surprise him and check him out myself. When I heard his voice I was like wow, guy sounds like a lady! There were celebs there to see him. I forget who though. He did 1 hr I think. Glad I got to see him. RIP

AWESOME, Joe!!! I never got 2 see him, mainly because the tickets were too expensive. He made an appearance in Boston about 5 yrs. ago at The Museum Of Fine Arts and they were asking over $350.00 per whack. THAT for ME is more than 2/3 a month's rent! LOL! Needless 2 say, I didn't go, but I'm happy 4 the discovery of the amazing voice and the CD's I subsequently acquired after having been introduced to it! Glad u got 2 see Jimmy live! smile

My favorite...

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
