Silly Love Songs was actually a reply song to John Lennon's How Do You Sleep, which was about Paul's solo songs. John said they were "muzak". George Harrison played slide guitar on How Do You Sleep. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think the Paul song you're thinking of that 'replies' to John's How Do You Sleep is Dear Friend, from the Wings Wildlife album. 'Silly Love Songs' was in part Paul's general response to critics (including Lennon) saying that McCartney had 'gone soft' since leaving the Beatles. Of course, it was a huge hit, and if you listen to the intro, it has an interesting 'avante-garde' tapeloop of what appears to be factory sounds, as if Paul is 'churning out' those 'Silly Love Songs' by the dozen .
And what's wrong with that?

One of the reasons critics don't like ballads and adult contemporary because a large part of the audience is female, so it's not macho. They're going to go for guitar rock, not Air Supply. Back in the 1970s, the audiences for music like prog and hard rock was primarily male. But in the 1980s, hair metal groups had more women in the audience as they did power ballads, which the regular metal bands didn't really do. Music popular with women generally is not considered cool, like teen idol pop, disco, dance music, bubblegum, Lillith Fair style folky singers, Whitney Houston/Celine Dion/Michael Bolton style balladeers, etc. It's why Peter Gabriel is considered cool and Phil Collins/Mike + The Mechanics are not. They make jokes about light rock and call it "yacht rock". They don't talk about easy listening acts like Percy Faith & Lawrence Welk either.
