It's pretty well known that Daz actually ghost-produced "Afro Puffs" and a chunk of "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle" too. Check the writers credits on "Afro Puffs". Daz has a writers credit. The lyrics are undeniably Rage's.

But I know that's not your point. To address that - I maintain that Dre should NOT own Death Row's catalog. He jumped ship. He left that label in the lurch. He voluntarily gave up any controlling rights as a co-founder when he did that. If he wants to regain the masters to The Chronic, sure. He can have that. But nothing else. Remember, Pac's main beef with Dre was that he was lazy, and he'd show up every now and then and make one beat, while other cats like Daz and Pac himself were in the studio every damn day. Dre was only a co-founder because he was the big name at the time the label started. But Pac was right, Dre is lazy. 15 years since Chronic 2001 and still no Detox proves that. Dude has made 2 albums in 25 years. Plus, he's egotistical. If Dre bought the whole Row catalog, you'd maybe get one or two re-releases of his shit and everything else would get ignored. Fuck that shit. The real gems of Death Row are the songs that Dre had nothing to do with. Even some of the stuff he was involved with, was produced by others. Like "Natural Born Killaz" which was Sam Sneed's song.

I don't even believe that. Knowing Dre's style from 1984-1991, I hear a continuation of production style (mixing aesthetic, sample choices, instrumentation) especially in 1991's Efil4zaggin preceding 1992-1993 Death Row hip hop genre classic albums, The Chronic and D****style.

And I know he jumped ship, but I still think the catalog would be in better care under Dr. Dre (with too much money) than a random Canadian woman (with too much money).

Pretty sure it was discussed in Ronin Ro's book. Suge has also stated that Daz did a lot on Chronic and Doggystyle.

I don't know why this is news - Dre has ALWAYS had people doing the work for him. 15 years ago, it was Mel-Man's stamp all over 2001 (Scott Storch too), and Mark Batson all over recent work with Eminem and 50 Cent. The MAIN riff on "The Real Slim Shady" was Tommy Coster, Dre did only the drums (I guess) yet has the producer credit.

Another person who contributed a lot to Death Row under-the-radar was DJ Quik. He did a LOT of mixing work, keyboard work and even talkbox, most notably on "All Eyez On Me" - Thug Passion and All About U come to mind. Johnny J, who became a good friend of mine before he passed, confirmed this to me.

The way Snoop tells the story is that other dudes was making the beats and Dre was "producing" in the same sense that Quincy Jones produces or Mutt Lange produces, the pop/rock definition of the word. Which is fine. But, in hip-hop, we tend to associate the word "produced by" as in, this is the dude that made the music. And the evidence doesn't suggest that that's what Dre's role was.

I mean, peep Sam Sneed's "The Heist". This is the track that became "Natural Born Killaz". It's not very far removed from what it became.
