Well, one of the main reasons McCartney and Lennon shared a fair ammount of musical differences that led to the split up is that Lennon was the "deep guy" while Paul was the "mellow, silly guy".

This song says "Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs.
And what's wrong with that?"

He's right, you know, Paul is goddamn right. I'm here to discuss a topic that is long overshadowed in all music forums: Why music snobs tend to hate THESE songs,, cheesy sweet lame corny love songs? Why hate that? Aren't they the reason there's a smile on peoples faces everyday?

Silly Love Songs was actually a reply song to John Lennon's How Do You Sleep, which was about Paul's solo songs. John said they were "muzak". George Harrison played slide guitar on How Do You Sleep.

I think the Paul song you're thinking of that 'replies' to John's How Do You Sleep is Dear Friend, from the Wings Wildlife album. 'Silly Love Songs' was in part Paul's general response to critics (including Lennon) saying that McCartney had 'gone soft' since leaving the Beatles. Of course, it was a huge hit, and if you listen to the intro, it has an interesting 'avante-garde' tapeloop of what appears to be factory sounds, as if Paul is 'churning out' those 'Silly Love Songs' by the dozen .

One of the reasons critics don't like ballads and adult contemporary because a large part of the audience is female, so it's not macho. They're going to go for guitar rock, not Air Supply. Back in the 1970s, the audiences for music like prog and hard rock was primarily male. But in the 1980s, hair metal groups had more women in the audience as they did power ballads, which the regular metal bands didn't really do. Music popular with women generally is not considered cool, like teen idol pop, disco, dance music, bubblegum, Lillith Fair style folky singers, Whitney Houston/Celine Dion/Michael Bolton style balladeers, etc. It's why Peter Gabriel is considered cool and Phil Collins/Mike + The Mechanics are not. They make jokes about light rock and call it "yacht rock". They don't talk about easy listening acts like Percy Faith & Lawrence Welk either.

The intro threw me off a bit, because it's like early industrial music from the same time period.
