2 of my coworkers went to the South Carolina "Panties Tour" and they said R. Kelly had a DJ backing/playing all of his Shit and not a single band member. They said he sang his azz off. They paid $150 per ticket and the concert was held at the newest and Biggest Concert Hall in Town. I asked them how did Tamar do and they said she was "aiight"...LOL...I wonder if R.Kelly left his band at home because he thinks Southern folks are ignorant? They said those women didnt want to see Tamar, they were there for The King of R&B.

I wouldn't imagine that it had anything to do with him thinking Southerners are too ignorant to appreciate a band. It was more likely a cost issue. You have to pay band members and a music director. A DJ pushing buttons is a lot more cost effective. Tacky, but cost effective.

It's ridiculous. But there are many who see him as the victim, it's a conversation those who support R Kelly will not publically have.

If you ask me, it kinda takes away the freedom of any established artist to change up the songs w/o a backup band.

I saw K-Ci & Jojo sing with backing tracks a few years ago. They were pretty good, but the whole thing just seems a bit lame without a band. BANDS ONLY, for any artists I see from now on!

Well, let me just say this. I saw R. Kelly in the summer last year... and his band was lifeless.

They were the most boring and generic band i have seen in a long time for a big artist. I mean the piano and keyboard playing was 3rd grade
There was just nothing much going on in that department. So maybe this is for the better?

Bands costs a lot of bread. Do most music-buyers or concert-goers care about live bands anymore?

I'm not going to waste my hard-earned cash to see any artist use backing tracks instead of an actual band onstage. I might as well catch a fan-posted video on YouTube for free.

Even artists who do use live bands still incorporate backing tracks. I would argue they use it just about the same amount as people who don't have live bands. Unless the artist is a real musician or someone like Janelle Monae, Fiona etc all artists use it. I just think this is a collective problem with this era of performers. Everything is not 100% live. At least he sung it live. There are artists who use bands but don't sing one vocal live.

I do...I'm not going to see Kelly anytime soon, but I always pay $100+ for Orchestra seats and I want a Big show with a LIVE band. I'm not paying my hard earned money to see American Idol or The Voice "Acts". Established artists like Kelly should tour with Live bands and give their fans/patrons their monies worth...When I see my coworker I'm going to ask if Tamar had a LIVE band...They performed at an 18,000 seat Venue this wasnt a night club....Come wit'it....People paid MONEY for those seats...

I went to see Bilal a while back, and his opening act came out and set up a Mac laptop and pushed "play". They did their set with Garage Band as their backing tracks.

I wouldn't want to pay good money to see an artist using pre-recorded tracks instead of a live band, neither. Hell, I've paid $15 or $20 bucks to see veteran artists perform and they had FULL live bands! But they are of a different generation.

I think many contemporary artists are not bothering with live bands because, again, they have to pay the band. If they can just use a DJ to play tracks or bring a laptop on stage with them to play the music (which is what most are doing in the studio), they are saving hundreds of thousands of dollars not having to pay a drummer, bassist, keyboard player and background singers. Smart, if they have the type of audience who are willing pay the dough for expensive tickets and let them get away with it. I wouldn't. But, I have a feeling the average R. Kelly and Tamar fan don't care about musicians. They are only there to see Kelly bump n' grind and watch Tamar do whatever she does (I don't know anything about her).

Last year, I saw the Backstreet Boys and they performed with backing tracks (with an acoustic set/where they played the instruments) and they didn't even have a DJ. And DJ Pauly D as an opening act don't count. Observe:
