Kelis' Food: yay or nay?

I loved the preview tracks, so maybe my expectations were too high. But it's kinda meh on first listen. Too samey sounding, songs lack strong hooks. Hopefully it's a grower.

Heard the preview tracks and wasn't that impressed. Only songs I like are "Jerk Ribs" and "Hooch". Perhaps it's a grower album but right now I'm not impressed enough to buy it. shrug

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Its a beautiful "press play" record. Kelis really outdid herself.

I'm a huge admirer of her work and therefore I'm going to pick up a copy this afternoon.

Yeah its definitely more of a grower type of album. Ive had it for over a month and I play it all the time, but it didn't blow me away on first listen. Give it a chance. Its definitely worth it IMO.

Change it one more time..

I have not heard the album yet, but I bought a ticket for her NYC show in June so I'm gambling it will be a big "yay" for me.

It's brilliant... Production is amazing, horns are great... Really can't wait to get even more into it as it's got a lot of depth.

Yes! Kelis is my favorite female solo artist after Patti Labelle and Whitney Houston! Food is a great album. I've been listening to it ever since it first previewed on the internet. Now, is it me, or does this album sound a bit like Prince's 'Sign O' The Times'? "Forever Be" sounds like it could come right off SOTT. biggrin

Yea. It's her best album since Wanderland. I even like it more than Kaleidoscope.

My first response to that was, "Whaaa'??", but, on thinking about it, actually I can 'hear' it being done with a Prince vibe. Maybe not so SOTT-like in my head, but a 'La la la, hee hee hee' or 'Good Love' kind of feel, with big synth snares and a Camille voice. cool

I love it. She's such a unique artist. Shame people are always sleeping on her. There's more out there than the 3 or 4 artists that the public always seem to flock to.

It's funny, I played Jerk Ribs for a friend, who's a big Fela Kuti fan - think that song has a definite Fela vibe. And she was like, "Oh, sounds like Prince!"

Jerk Ribs is sooo good. There's some other class tracks on the album, Friday Fish Fry, Runnin, Hooch, Bless the Telephone are all nice

My favorite track is Biscuits and Gravy. Runnin is haunting as well. Its really cool how she integrated her "sound" but came with something completely different. I am gonna make a bangin Kelis playlist this weekend as I'd love to hear all these tracks with classics like Marathon, Suspended, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, I Don't Think So...

.

Bless The Telephone is beautiful, isn't it? Apparently a cover from the 70s featuring TV On The Radio lead singer Tunde Adebimpe.

Its good when an artist releases something and you get back into their older tracks. I've just re-discovered the Cee-Lo track she did - Lil Star - I haven't heard that in ages

biggrin I know what she means. I think of it as 'Fela meets Five Star'. There's something about the melody that reminds me of that 80s R&B pop sound.

The honest simplicity of the original is nice, but her cover has the edge for me.

I love her music but this is a hard album to listen to.The songs are not bad but it seems like it just drags on.Maybe its because of the energy on flesh tone.Hopefully its a grower.
