R&B pioneers of the mid-50s.
Clyde McPhatter Sam Cooke Jackie Wilson Little Willie John
I belive these four brothers ushered in a new style of R&B, different than that of what Ray Charles, Hank Ballard, Lloyd Price, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, ect were bringing to the table.
Those four have a more smoothed out voice, similar to what the doo-woop groups of that time were giving the world.
Soon to be followers would be
Dee Clark Jesse Belvin (thouugh it was baritone, it was smooth and was not a gritty shouter) Joe Tex Marv Johnson Smokey Robinson of the Miracles Brook Benton James Brown of the Famous Flames Chuck Willis

Big Joe Turner You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton | |
