I'm Begining To Think Snoop Dogg Is Overrated As Hell.

Snoop is nothing but a cartoon character and that's what keeps him going. I have seen Snoop quite a few times in person. Dude is around LA a lot lol and i even worked on one of his music videos. He can be a pretty funny guy when he wants to.

But lets be real... EVERYONE knows Doggystyle is his only good album. I mean is there any other Snoop album you can listen to front to back?

He's had some ok songs on his albums here and there... but 50% of every album since doggystyle is filler.

Dude is now on a Jason Derulo track (I despise Derulos music like the plague) and it's called wiggle... with Snoop talking about typical Snoop stuff.}

Bitches, sex, bitches, sex, weed, weed, weed, bitches, and maybe a reference to gang life. lyrically Snoop has never been special even on Doggystyle. He had good rhymes but nothing jaw dropping.

And the stuff he did with Pharrell was pretty good... mainly CAUSE of the production. Not anything else going on lol

Snoop is always relevant for just being snoop. But as a rapper and music artist i really think he's one of the most overrated hip-hop artists of all time.

Snoop's 'cool' factor has helped him way more than his rapping skills. He is more of a personality than anything else. But hey, he made it to the top ten list of celebrities that have killed someone, so he can't be all that bad, right?

http://listverse.com/2011...d-someone/

eek

Top 10 Celebrities Who Have Killed Someone

We have many lists on the site relating to murder, killing and death in general. This list takes a slightly different angle from those in that it relates specifically to celebrities who have killed, or been accused of having killed. None of the entries here are celebrities because of their crimes; they are all people who committed (or were accused) after their celebrity was already established.

10
Snoop Dogg
Rapper

Snoop Dogg 1

The rapper famous for his duet with D. Dre in ‘Ain’t Nothin but a G Thing.’ He was arrested and put on trial in connection with the death of Philip Woldemariam, a member of a rival gang who was shot and killed by Snoop’s bodyguard, McKinley Lee. Both Snoop and Lee were defended by Johnnie Cochran at the trial, and were both found not guilty on grounds of self-defense. He has since gone on to enjoy a lucrative career.

9
Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle
Silent Film Actor

Fattyarbuckle

A silent film actor who acted alongside the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Mabel Normand. Some of his most notable films are ”His Wedding Night,” “Coney Island,” and “Out West.” On September 5, 1921, he rented rooms 1220 and 1221, at the San Fransisco St. Francis Hotel, and invited several women along. One of these women was a party loving actress named Virginia Rappe. Rappe was already in poor health as a result of heavy drinking and multiple abortions. A drunken Rappe claimed that Arbuckle tried to rape her while she was unconscious. After she died, a week later, it was theorized that Arbuckle may have raped her with a Coca Cola bottle, resulting in her bladder rupturing. He was found innocent at a trial, however his career never recovered from the scandal, and it haunted him until his death, in 1933.

C-Murder
Rapper

C-Murder-Photo-1

Rapper C-Murder, aka Corey Miller, who was part of the rap group TRU, with his brothers Master P and Silkk the Shocker, was at the Platinum Club in Harvey, Louisiana, on January 12, 2002. After an altercation resulted in 16 year old Steve Thomas being beaten and shot to death, Miller was identified as the assailant. After being convicted of second degree murder, the verdict was overturned by the Louisiana Supreme Court, in 2006. A second trial found him and the brother of rap mogul Master P guilty, and they were sentenced to life in prison. It has been said that the motivation for the killing was after Thomas embarrassed C-Murder during a rap battle hosted at the club that evening.

7
Gig Young
Actor

Gigyoung.Jpg?W=500

Academy award winning actor Gig Young, won Best Supporting Actor for “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” and appeared in films like “Sergeant York,” “The Three Musketeers,” “Teacher’s Pet,” “The Touch of Mink” and “Game of Death.” He married his fourth wife, 21 year old German actress Kim Schmidt, at the age of 64. Three weeks after their marriage, the couple was found dead in their Manhattan apartment. Police ultimately concluded that Young killed Schmidt, and then turned the gun on himself. No motive for the killing was ever made clear.

6
Don King
Boxing Promoter

Don King

Don King has promoted some of the most well known names in boxing, such as Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Evander Holyfield. After dropping out of Kent State University, he ran an illegal bookmaking operation and was charged with two different killings, 13 years apart. After he shot Hillary Brown in the back, it was found to be a justifiable homicide since Brown was attempting to rob him. King was convicted of second degree murder after he stomped Sam Garrett to death, an employee who owed him $600. He served just under four years in prison.

5
Paul Kelly
Actor

Paulkelly

Stage and screen actor, Paul Kelly won a Tony Award for his role in the play “Command Decision.” During a fistfight, in 1927, with actor Ray Raymond, he ended up beating Raymond to death. He spent 25 months in San Quentin prison. Kelly later married Raymond’s widow, Dorothy MacKaye, who was briefly imprisoned as an accomplice. He died in 1956, of a heart attack at age 57.

4
Sid Vicious
Bassist for the Sex Pistols

Vicioussid

Sid Vicious was the bassist for the controversial punk rock group the Sex Pistols. Along with his girlfriend, prostitute Nancy Spungen, he suffered from heroin addiction. One night, while staying in their room at New York’s Hotel Chelsea, Sid woke to find Nancy stabbed to death in the bathroom. He was arrested and charged for her killing. He frequently changed his story saying that he stabbed her, not meaning to kill her, in the middle of an argument, and then claimed he didn’t remember what happened. Sid died a few months later from a heroin overdose.

3
Phil Spector
Record Producer

54950654

This legendary record producer has backed numerous music legends such as the Beatles, the Ramones, Ike and Tina Turner and the Righteous Brothers. After actress Lana Clarkson was found shot to death in his mansion, Spector claimed the gunshot was self inflicted, but numerous people have claimed to have been held at gunpoint by Spector in the past. The first trial resulted in a hung jury, while the second trial found him guilty, and he was sentenced to 19 years to life.

2
Robert Blake
Actor

02-Robert-Blake

The actor who starred in films like “In Cold Blood” and the TV series “Baretta”, also started out as a child star in the 1930’s in the “Our Gang” series. In 2000, he married Christian Brando’s (Marlon Brando’s son) ex girlfriend, Bonnie Lee Bakley, who had a history of exploiting older men, especially celebrities for money. The couple went out to eat and, after leaving, Blake claims he went back to the restaurant with Bonnie in the car, to retrieve his gun he left at the table. When he returned to the car Bonnie was found shot to death. He was put on trial for her killing, but was later found innocent. Another jury found him liable for Bakley’s death, and he was ordered to pay her children $30 million.

1
O.J. Simpson
Footballer and actor

Oj-Simpson-Smiling-Murder-Trial

O.J. Simpson was recently divorced from his wife, Nicole Brown. When Brown and her friend, Ron Goldman, were found stabbed to death, much evidence pointed towards Simpson whose high speed chase and trial became headline news for over a year. He was eventually found not guilty in a controversial verdict, despite DNA evidence and a long history of spousal abuse. He was found responsible for their wrongful deaths by a civil court, and in 2006 wrote a hypothetical book explaining how he could have killed them. Some say he did it, some say he didn’t. We will probably never know.

Notable Others (not found guilty or just not included): Christian Brando, John Holmes

Doggystyle is pure genius. A stone cold hip-hop classic. Has he ever topped it? Nah. But he's made several enjoyable albums, like Doggfather, The Last Meal, Paid The Cost To Be The Boss, and Ego Trippin.

Several rappers are in the same boat, really. Nas has never outdone Illmatic. DMX has never outdone It's Dark And Hell Is Hot (although Flesh Of My Flesh was damn close). Ja Rule has never outdone Venni Vetti Vecci. Jay-Z has two classics - Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, but the rest of his catalog is mediocre, with some of his albums being utterly terrible (Blueprint 2, American Gangster and that recent Magna Carta one were all unlistenable to me for the most part). 50 Cent has never outdone Get Rich Or Die Tryin. Mobb Deep have never outdone The Infamous and Hell On Earth. Eminem has never outdone The Slim Shady LP, although MMLP was close.

I think the only rapper with a string of classics is 'Pac. Thug Life Vol 1, Me Against The World, All Eyez On Me, Makaveli : The 7 Day Theory and even the posthumous RU Still Down and Still I Rise album = all classics! And as far as groups, I think A Tribe Called Quest's discography is damn near flawless.

Um, yeah, thanks for bringing this thread back to earth, Militant.

You guys have no sense of history: Doggystyle and Snoop's work on The Chronic, helped usher

a new style of rap music into the American consciousness. Yeah, he's a character, but he used

to be a dope emcee. And he can put together a really well written verse when inspired.

But he's hardly overrated. Not shocked that this forum can lack historical perspective sometimes!

He's been in the game for almost three decades, c'mon!

Two classics. ATLiens and Aquemini.

Speakerboxxx/Love Below doesn't count. Those are Big Boi and Andre solo albums packaged together as an Outkast set.

Bullocks to speakerbox and love below not counting.

And stankonia is classic as well. Miss Jackson, so fresh so clean and nonnsingle faves like gasoline dreams, Xplosion, we love deez hoes. I wasn't, but much of the world was huge on B.O.B. even tho it hit hard in my rave period.

Artesian

He peaked too soon, IMO. He hasn't had another album that's performed in the same neighborhood commercially as Doggystyle. Most longterm "big" acts have at least two *huge* albums, even if one did a little better. It's like that one couldn't be topped or decently matched, and wound up making everything that came after it feel underwhelming. I think being acquitted for murder took away a lot of Snoop's early 'edge' that made him initially appealing to the masses. Afterwards he became less "gangsta" and more of this sort of laid back and "bohemian."

Snoop is NOT overrated.

It's just like that thread saying LL Cool J is overrated or a sell-out. They set the standards!

I hate putting down another artist to prop another one up, but all I had to see was a rapper young as hell like Mac Miller trying to freestyle, and then Snoop freestyling off the top of his head, sounding SMOOTH AS SHIT to know:

a) Snoop is talented

b) He always had it

c) He still got it

d) He's BETTER STILL than rappers that were floating in they daddy bag when "Deep Cover" was hot.

Especially in the field of rap where being NEW is key, Snoop's style was ahead of the pack in the early 90s, made its impact, and continues to sound current.

And he is highly prolific, but still made many albums not as good as his debut that were still better (as far as RATING anything) than a lot of rap talent.

Snoop was one of the many victims of all the drama at Death Row Records. I mean, first off, the label was successful because Dre was at the top of his game with his production on The Chronic and Doggystyle. But it's no secret that Dre and Suge were never really that tight - Dre used Suge's muscle and gang connections to get him out of his contract with Eazy-E, Jerry Heller and Ruthless Records. It's said that Suge literally held a gun to Jerry Heller's head to get Dre, Miche'le and others off Ruthless.

After that, and after the success of those albums, Dre didn't really need Suge and he didn't like the direction he was taking the label. There was always tension between Snoop and Suge because Snoop was a Crip and Suge was a Blood. And then when 'Pac came to the label, he got all of the focus, because he was more popular and more versatile artist, had an insane work ethic, had the kind of personality/charisma that meant everyone liked him and wanted to be around him and were excited to work with him, and he had Suge's ear because he was also rolling with the Bloods.

So Snoop became less of a focus. And also, Dre jumped ship, so Snoop wasn't able to follow up with the partnership that had worked so well on Chronic and Doggystyle. It's a credit to Snoop and DJ Pooh that The Doggfather album is as good as it is even with no Dre. But by the time it came out, Tupac had been murdered, Suge was about to get sent back to jail and Death Row had almost completely fallen apart.

He might have languished completely if it hadn't been for Master P bailing him out and signing him to No Limit. P had enough money to do it, even though they had to pay Suge on every release because Snoop still had contractual obligations to Death Row that he was violating. That's why a few albums later, he did that "The Last Meal" record. The idea being that that album was the last meal Suge was ever gonna have off Snoop's back, cos he didn't owe him any more albums after that. And I recall that around the same time, Suge hit back by releasing a compilation of Snoop outtakes called Dead Man Walkin', the title of which was Suge's threat to Snoop. And also, he photoshopped the picture so Snoop was wearing a red outfit on the cover, which of course is the color of the Bloods.

I was at that time, and still am, a huge Death Row Records fan. The history of the label is fascinating to me.

The phrase "it's not what you say, it's how you say it" comes to mind.

He is as charismatic as anyone you could name on the music scene.

His voice is distinctive and compelling.

Those are his key traits which make him a star.

On top of that, he's written a bunch of great songs earlier in his career, then sporadically some good ones since then. No doubt his success has made him lose some of the hunger he had as a writer in his early years...that's not unexpected and happens to most.

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I really enjoyed Ego Trippin. It was his best album in years. "Sexual Eruption" is fantastic.

The only thing was, like most hip-hop albums these days, it was far too long. There was a solid 8-10 enjoyable songs on there, but it's a 21 track album! If you trim all the fat, you've got an incredibly solid album.

I have felt that snoop has been tarnishing his legacy for the past decade or so and while this money grabs and weak tracks shouldn't erode the legacy of what originally got him fame and renown it does. Don't get me wrong, most of us like cashing those cheques ( as we all do in our jobs) I feel he is overexposed and more likely to hang with Beiber and one direction than to give a chance producing an underground rapper with his own money and collaborating with him................................................................................................................................................

His greatest strength as a star is his weakness as an artist. An ability to transcend authentic genre specific credibility to be the now avuncular black exploitation lite token cool rapper who can be embraced from middle America to the prep schools of Beverly Hills. I agree with militant that ego trippin was a good but overlong album and I enjoyed his cover of cool by the time. But his Beckham lovin' Marley rasta reincarting dance pop cameoing butt is becoming more post war, film making Elvis. He had a cool flow, a likeable persona but at the end of the day he is a reverse iceberg. The more you know him the less cool he is.
