I have to be honest in saying that I just learned about the musical legecy of The Nolans (originally called The Nolan Sisters) this month of April 2014.





After listening some of their greatest hits and reading up on their music career, I'm very surprise that The Nolans never made it to the USA or Canada.

They were pretty big here in the UK. I think everyone of that generation knows who they are. Two of the sisters have been on "Celebrity Big Brother" in recent years.

Well they were no were near as talented as the Jacksons

nor did they have the power of Motown behind them.

Their biggest hit was in the late 70's long after the

heyday ofthe Osmonds & the Jackson 5.

Can't find out who they are.

They didn't show up on Wikipedia

or Amazon.

Huge in the British world and surprisingly Japan. I got a greatest hits CD in 1998 thatw as all in Japanese, they were 5 Irish sisters who had about 10 big disco themed songs, none were colossal smashes, their biggest was 1979s "I'm in the modd for dancing" which got to #4 in the UK, they ahd about 10 more Top #40 hits and were big in Germany.

The group broke up in 1982/83 and one of their last hits was a good cover of "Thank you for the Music" the Abba hit. Infighting and various Nolan sisters leaving to have families were the reasons. I love this music as well. Songs like Chemistry, Gotta Pull myself together, whose gonna rock your world, Give a little bit are soft disco classics and probably are the best Irish disco songs ever made.


Ireland is more known for Celtic and rock music rather than disco so this makes a change.

There were other US groups around that time that didn't really have much popularity like The Stairsteps, The Jackson Sisters (from Compton, CA), The Cowsills, and the DeFranco Family. The Sylvers, for the most part were not as big as the Jackson 5 or Osmonds either. Sister Sledge released a few albums before they had a big hit. There was an earlier group called The Lennon Sisters that had some popularity as they appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show every so often.

I don't know for sure if this is true, but I heard that The Nolans were the first act to outsell The Beatles in Japan.
