Which of these three 'Free' (Deniece) covers... After posting the Cameo one a couple of weeks ago, I'm interested in gauging the Org's opinion on three covers that came out of Deniece Williams' classic hit 'Free', all three coincidentally recorded in 1994. . First, there's Shatasha Williams - no relation to Niecy, AFAIK, but she apparently rolled with BT&H for a while: . . Then there's Debelah Morgan, later known for her tango-inspired 'Dance For Me': . . And finally, the diva, the legend, Chanté Moore, who spliced some Commodores 'Sail On' in there: . . So! Who takes the bronze, who the silver, and who the gold? Do any of these ladies of the '90s do justice to Deniece's quiet storm bedtime ballad, or are they all a far cry away from Niecy, even when they venture into the whistle register? YOU decide! . I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

My vote goes to Chanté Moore. Those other two can GTF!

I knew no matter who the other two were, Chante would win it for me. Thing is, I have no idea who those other two ladies are. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

. For those of you who don't know who Debelah is, you might just remember the minor hit she had around the turn of the millennium, which, I correct myself, is called 'Dance WITH Me': . . Shatasha, I had not heard beyond the 'Free' cover, I must admit. . I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

. Thanks for embedding those covers, Dancelot and Kit. I always love to hear this particular song get covered... when it's done in good taste, of course. Have long been in love with 'Free'. . EDIT: Also, it seems there've been quite a lot of Williamses who sang this, huh? . [Edited 4/23/14 10:06am] I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

Not a remake, but there's an interpolation of Free during the adlibs near the end of the song You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
