Why Ringo Starr wasn't people's favorite Beatle? He was so overshadowed by Lennon and Paul, at least George was known for his philosophy and trip to India, it's just that people never shown so much intrest in Ringo. [Edited 4/13/14 15:52pm]

He also wasnt as active in the songwring thing. He had some...octopus's garden and don't pass me by. He was also older than the other Beatles and performed a bit longer than the others. He had a level of professionalism that kept him out of some of Paul john and Georges shenanigans. He was a drummer and was usually out of the the way of the front men. [Edited 4/13/14 21:51pm]

On the contrary...Ringo reportedly received the most fan mail during Beatlemania.

He was Marge Simpson's favorite!
More puzzling, why do people who claim to know something about "good musicianship" put him down? He's awesome.

I think Ringo was the most popular in the early years. He looks better with a beard. Just Music-No Categories-Enjoy It!

Ask some people from back in the day...Ringo was the most popular when they hit it big. Everyone I know who was there all liked Ringo the best at the time. They said he was the funniest and most personable (they thought). I personally think he has aged well...he looked and sounded good on that Beatles special a few months ago. Paul sounds good, but looks wise not so much imo.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I always though in the actual Beatlemania days that Ringo was the most popular

It doesn't really have anything to do with the original question that started the thread but there is a great quote by John Lennon when he was asked if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world:
Cracks me up everytime.

I wasn't around then, but I got the impression that he was pretty popular--and the first two movies are more or less built around his sad puppy dog appeal.

Fun Fact: Ringo actually had more top 10 hits post-Beatles than any of the other members.
I think Ringo is a lot more popular than he gets credit for nowadays. But John was the brewding artistic one, George was the serious one, Paul was the cute pop guy.... To be honest, Ringo is the only Beatle I'd actually want to sit down and have a beer with and he never gives off the impression that he'd be too good for you. He just seems like a guy who wanted to have a great time, play great music, and enjoy himself. So in some ways, he's my favorite Beatle.
He's also a criminally underrated drummer. I never thought so until I watch the Anthology again and realized how lucky they were to have him.

Ringo wrote Octopus's Garden, Don't Pass Me By, and had co-writing credit on What Goes On and Flying. I think he was an excellent drummer and a fair actor, definitely a vital part of the Beatles sound. [Edited 4/23/14 10:01am] [Edited 4/23/14 10:02am]

Recent research gives that quote to a journalist who was interviewing John Lennon. The quote mistakenly got attributed to Lennon. John Lennon was a great supporter of Ringo Starr's playing and songwriting.
