You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Oh nice! seems like DLR has toned himself down a bit in his old age. Which is really nice to see.

Toned down?! I was at one of his shows around 91. This young girl walks past us looking dazed, confused, traumatized. Come glazed in her big hair! I ask this security guard, wtf happened to her? "Oh she just blew diamond Dave and his crew!".

Is there a point where the best bits start in the interview? I can't give DLR 34 minutes of my life

Uhhhh yeah that's the point. That was in 1991, this interview is from 2014. lol

I didn't say he was toned down in 1991. He was drugged out and whored out back then.

I used to think Dave was the absolute coolest when i was a kid. I watched interviews and thought he was the funnest and hippest guy.

Then i got older... and watched those interviews again. And read a couple Van Halen biographies, stories from management and the band members. And he was an obnoxious little shit lol amazing stage presence for sure. But, i heard people couldn't stand to be around him more than 5 minutes usually. Which is why he never musicians never stuck around him too much. Unless they were sharing some of that kush and coke pimp2

He had some good stories and tid bits in the long interview. And wasn't as annoying as he usually is. I am actually curious as to the work outside of VH he is doing in the future smile

Another Roth story. He was playing a show in NY and a couple miles from the show was the usual rough part of town, strip clubs, dive bars, etc. Some kids that I knew hanging out and Roth runs up to them in a panic. Gives the kids $200 to "borrow" a bicycle so he can peddle to the auditorium they are playing. Tells the kid just show up at the auditorium and ask for so n so and he will get his bike back. He said he lost track time and needed to get to the show, was running a few minutes behind. I think that had to be 88? Or 89? They got the bike back no problem.

I remember the other story was when Extreme and Cinderella opened for him? Thinking it was 91. True and he was boozing that day. I was a big time Extreme fan and Gary got me some passes that day. I hung out with them a couple weeks before that show at a radio event. The guys from Extreme had a limo that this radio station sent them. They did a signing then a show for radio station and actually sent the limo to get coffee specifically from McDonalds. Haha! I don't think Starbucks was happening quite yet. Roth was doing shots of jack I believe that day of show w Extreme, Cinderella. Extreme killed them all that day.

I always thought Roth solo that he was best w Steve Vai. The live show then just had more energy. After Vai left it was interesting but not the same but I do like the 1998 release. I fell same about Stephen Pearcy working with this cat called Mark Zavon, that was short lived. They say good guitar players come a dime a dozen but I don't even believe that anymore.
