There have been many over the years that really shocked and sadden me, but I have to say the deaths of John Lennon and Amy Winehouse really got to me.
I was 17 when JL was killed. I remember exactly where I was and how crazy it seemed (and still does). I couldn't believe someone had actually shot him. Why? I still can't answer that to this day. I always think of all the cool things he would've done had he still been alive.
Amy's death was just plain sad. She had so much going for her. Sure, she had drinking problems, but the girl could write and deliver a song beautifully. She also died on my birthday
Was not surprised by the death of Michael Jackson, Elvis or Marvin Gaye. Very sad though. I'm not surprised or shocked by many drug overdoses. I have to agree to agree. both john Lennon and Amy winehouse deaths got to me emotionally. john was a part of being a generation shifter. I loved his smooth courage. Amy winehouse's voice and originality (at the beginning of her musical trek) touched my inner self. I actually grieved for her, even before she died. “Transracial is a term that has long since been defined as the adoption of a child that is of a different race than the adoptive parents,” : https://thinkprogress.org...fb6e18544a

Wow! I forgot all about Minnie. Its eerie what you said. I discovered her when she died also! The spooky thing about it. I was listening to a tribute of her on the radio back then & Teena Marie was doing the tribute! The song "Memory Land" still spooks me out to this day. Minnie's husband produced Teena's second album Lady Tee.....

Isn't that spooky, Rude Boy?! I spend most of my days talking to the angels around me (the ones whom have passed) cuz I'm a spiritual brotha, so I know they're always around me, watchin' over and hearin' me. I always felt that Minnie was reachin' out 4 me on that day in the record store and bein' the lonely, withdrawn kid that I was, it was as if SHE needed a friend TOO and I was happy 2 oblige the gorgous woman with the Jeri curl on the front of the album. And yes, Richard produced Lady Tee's "Lady T" CD one year after Minnie passed on. They only pass ON if u pass 'em UP. If u keep 'em near and dear and talk 2 'em often and ask 'em 2 guide your steps, they stick around (always.) I never use the word "dead" and I always speak about 'em in the Present Tense. They like that. Nite! Think about DATT!

Michael Jacskon's death was shocking and very sad for me. Just living in a world without MJ in it?
But, Teena Marie's passing truly unexpected and sad. A rare gift to all that appreciated her music.
Whitney Houston, although a great voice she was not my all-time favorite singer. But the difference with her passing...I just tear up often thinking about her struggles. My favorite thing about Whitney is her voice and song choices on the Preacher's Wife soundtrack. That girl was singing directly to ME. For that I will always love her! ThankUPrince!

Pac & Biggie's death affected me because both murders seemed so senseless to me. Completely unneccessary. I was really angry about it. To me that was Hip Hop's worst moment. The whole instigated hysteria of the so called "Eastcoast vs. Westcoast" crap was pretty much the writing on the wall that eventually somebody was going get severely hurt or killed. And when Pac was gunned down looking like a deer in headlights; mentally, I started my clock then to time how long it would take for them to get Biggie. I hated that era. - I think it also affected me because they were around my same age when it happened. - - - - Still hard to believe Mike's gone. [Edited 4/22/14 7:55am]

Amy's got to me in a weird way. I was at the U2 show at TCF and my friend took out his phone to take a pic and saw the news. When Bono dedicated "Stuck In A Moment" to her and you could tell a lot of the audience didn't know she'd passed.Kurt Cobain's was sad. In my teen angst I had written him a letter before his death telling him how much his music meant to me. I'd also written a letter to River Phoenix and then he died. I stopped writing letters. Wow...that's spooky. I wudda stopped too. Kurt's didn't bother me till years later when I found out he had crohns disease and the pain and problems from that affected his mood heavily...along with drug use... Anyways...I have crohns and the problems its caused me...including drug use..have brought me to some vary dark places. I don't condone suicide...but I understand.

Biggie. I got to work and my boss said a lot of people were calling me, crying. Every takeoff that day we shouted "it was all a dream!" over the radio. For weeks after when the Hynotized intro dropped at a party, it was like the crowd exploded. RIP since Run & Them were saying "Here we go"

Michael Hutchence's death affected me more than any of the others. It was one that the press didn't really know how to handle (autoerotic asphyxiation) and I think that's why he didn't get the full Rolling Stone cover story, front page news that other high-profile musical deaths do. . INXS were a huge part of the 80s, and to this day I still listen to them routinely. .

I grew up around a lot of Latinos, so Selena's death was a big deal. She was so young, and on the brink of crossover, so it was very sad and out of nowhere (shot by a close associate over nothing really). For some reason, Heath Ledger and Roger Ebert were two celebrity deaths that affected me a lot. I had just watched Brokeback Mountain several times and was extremely touched and thought he was super talented. And Ebert - I loved reading his blog and reviews, and then he/they were gone! So sad.

Absolutely MJ...I was pretty crushed when I heard about it, one of the heroes of my ill-begotten childhood And so close to his comeback...it was the stuff of greek tragedies, really...
Closely followed by Freddie Mercury...I was 8 years old when he died, but I still remember the news on the tv that day..the world had just lost the best frontman there ever was and ever will be..miss him to this day.

Stevie Ray Vaughn... I was looking forward to he and his brother, Jimmy, going on tour to support their collaboration, "Family Style." My fiends and I went to go see a tribute band called "Texas Flood" which was lead by the then unknown Corey Stevens. It helped ease some of the loss.

Its a tie between Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, both of their deaths were so tragic, unecessary and came too early in their lives. Both had phenomenal talent and both had their demons. I was very sad when they both died.
Thats all I need to say. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

At this moment i would have 2 say Michael Jackson. His death was surreal. After that(no order), Teena Marie, Jam Master Jay and Paul Raven( bassist for the band Killing Joke).
Of course the deaths of tupac, biggie, Roger, marvin gaye, Whitney, freddie mercury, Jame Brown, lennon, etc were shocking as well.
