jim morrison conflicted yet a great musical recording artist jim morrison must have felt a tremendous burden while being a vocalist/member of the doors.
i often wondered why Jim went so far away in regard to the heavy alcohol/drugged haziness he lived through. after looking more closely at Jim's stand out history during a time when flower-power, social change and the Viet nam war was at peak levels, one might be able to understand why he ran to the destructive side of his young self. check out this irony: jim morrison's dad "rear-admiral george stephen morrison," played a huge part in the war in Viet nam and the regulation. as follows: George Stephen Morrison (January 7, 1919 – November 17, 2008) was a United States Navy rear admiral and naval aviator. Morrison was commander of the U.S. naval forces in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident of August 1964, which sparked an escalation of American involvement in the Vietnam War. He was the father of the late Jim Morrison, the lead singer of the rock band The Doors. In 1963, Morrison took command of the Essex-class aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), flagship of a 3rd Fleet Carrier Division in the Pacific, and based at Naval Air Station Alameda, California. Morrison was in command of the Carrier Division during the controversial Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964, which resulted in a dramatic escalation of the Vietnam War. In 1966 he was promoted to Rear Admiral; at age 46. In WestPac in 1968, he was Commander of Task Force 77 (CTF 77); the USS Hancock (CVA-19) served as his flagship. Besides operations against communist forces in North Vietnam, the task force was diverted to Korea in December of 1968 to support South Korean forces battling North Korean infiltrators. Morrison successfully led the Task Force in the interdiction of communist North Korean forces in spite of attempts by Soviet Navy destroyers to prevent flight operations by attempting to cross the path of USS Hancock. In 1972, he was appointed Commander Naval Forces Marianas. As such, he was in charge of relief efforts for Vietnamese refugees sent to Guam after the 1975 fall of Saigon. Admiral Morrison was the keynote speaker at the decommissioning ceremony for Bon Homme Richard, his first ship as an admiral, on July 3, 1971 in Washington D.C., the same day his son, rock musician Jim Morrison, died in Paris, France at age 27. read more: http://en.m.wikipedia.org..._Morrison. Jim always steered away from the truth when asked about his family, per the following : excerpt: once Morrison graduated from UCLA, he broke off most contact with his family. By the time Morrison's music ascended to the top of the charts (in 1967) he had not been in communication with his family for more than a year and falsely claimed that his parents and siblings were dead (or claiming, as it has been widely misreported, that he was an only child). read more: http://en.m.wikipedia.org...m_Morrison man Jim Morrison must have suffered greatly from hours of being preoccupied with depressing thoughts and painful introspection.. IMO his handsome face spelled moodiness coupled with bouts of broodiness. his voice was rock-bluesy awesome [Edited 4/9/14 8:10am] “Transracial is a term that has long since been defined as the adoption of a child that is of a different race than the adoptive parents,” : https://thinkprogress.org...fb6e18544a

I go back and forth with Jim Morrison and The Doors. Sometimes I think he was a genius, othertimes I think he was an idiot.
Same with their music, sometimes I think it's great, othertimes I think it's s**t. 3121... Don't U Wanna Come?

Interesting to find out more about his dad's activities. I can understand why a young person of Morrison's generation might have wanted to reject/ deny his father with a military background/ record like that, whatever view history may take of it.
I think Jim came up with some great words and imagery in some of his lyrics and was a charismatic singer and performer, but personally, he appears to have been quite immature for his age (many rock stars are, eg Elvis, MJ) and would have needed to grow up a whole lot had he lived much longer.
And we must never underrate the Doors as a band, the three musician guys in that band were a unique unit in classic/ psychedelic rock and were very influential on later bands such as Blue Oyster Cult and The Cult, whose lead singer Ian Astbury went on to become lead singer with a revived line-up of the Doors (Doors of the 21st Century) with Manzarek and Krieger in the early 2000s.

My guess would be: he was addicted to drugs and alcohol.
It's easy to go far away under those conditions.

It's easy to go far away under those conditions. well due to groupies and hangers on, many great musicians got caught into the drug-funnel. (i know, i've been backstage many times & have witnessed this) however in morrison's case I feel convinced much of his heavy drug and alcohol usage was to keep hisself sedated to play to the flower power era facade he profiled. i mean if his/the doors followers were aware of Jim's father's roll in the viet nam war, he would have had to answer many uncomfortable questions about his father. “Transracial is a term that has long since been defined as the adoption of a child that is of a different race than the adoptive parents,” : https://thinkprogress.org...fb6e18544a

Musicians don't get into drugs because of groupies and hangers-on. They get into drugs because they like drugs. Don't blame the free love chicks for Jim's addiction. Those people are just part of the scene, they can be kept away if the musicians want them kept away.
I think musicians ARE more prone to drug abuse and alcoholism than people in other lines of work, for a lot of reasons. Maybe a big one is that once people have tasted total ecstasy and transcendence through their art, they start to seek it out anywhere they've heard it can be found.
Once they're into it, it's the most enabling lifestyle - that's when it becomes a problem there are groupies and hangers on who want to party, and maybe there are people from the business side that might prefer it if their artist is kept too stoned to think. Their presence doesn't help. But that's not the cause of musicians getting into drugs.
As for uncomfortable questions about his parents, Jim used to answer those by saying "My parents are dead."
