Chicago DJ Frankie Knuckles Dead http://www.complex.com/mu...dead-at-59
5 Magazine reports that legend of Chicago House Frankie Knuckles has passed away. This has been corroborated on social media by Chicago house artists Paul Johnson and DJ Deeon, although we've yet to receive official confirmation. - - - - UPDATE (11:32 PM): DJ David Morales adds his name to the artists apparently confirming the news:
- - - - If true, it's a major blow to one of the most important figures in modern music. Knuckles was born in the Bronx in 1955, and became a disco DJ in the early 1970s, spinning with childhood friend and garage pioneer Larry Levan at the Continental Baths. In 1977, the Warehouse nightclub opened in Chicago, and Knuckles moved to the city to become its premier DJ. The music Knuckles would spin at "The Warehouse" became shortened to "house," and soon evolved into its own genre, as producers used drum machines to produce less expensive version of popular dance styles. The Warehouse became the crucible of a genre that would conquer the world and can still be heard on radio stations to this day. In 1983, Knuckles moved from The Warehouse to his own club, the Power Plant.

My chest hurts.
One of the best times I ever had was when Frankie was here in Chicago spinning at the House of Blues, Thanksgiving night, 2003.

One of my favorites Frankie Knuckles treatment. He turned Chante Moore out on this mix

Holy crap! This is so sad. He was a true pioneer in the dance/electronica music scene, and most of the DJ's who followed owe a huge debt of gratitude to him and his spinning beats. Odder still is the fact that while he was primarily huge in the urban areas of the USA like New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and his hometown of Chicago, he was a legend overseas, especially in Europe.

My all-time favorite Frankie Knuckles track.
The father of house music is dead.
How many people created an entirely really important genre of music that went on to electrify the world?
You can count'em on both hands. Maybe one.
There were arguably (or not) better DJs and producers that came after, but Frankie Knuckles started one of the most important American cultural movements of the 20th century - house music. [Edited 4/1/14 19:04pm]

FYI there is a tribute campaign to get "Tears" to chart on iTunes, it is currently priced at 99 cents.

Joey Negro thinks this is a lovely gesture but is concerned that sales go to TRAX which is notorious for not paying its artists.
i think it should mentioned that Trax Records in Chicago are notorious for not paying artists. unfortunatly they own many house classics inc Frankie Knuckles/Jamie Principle "your love". i feel something should be agreed immediatly with their uk licensee to guarantee that a decent proportion of the money being generated at the moment does goes to the right place and not just straight into their pocket
Also:
From Dj David Morales I want to thank everyone all over the world for the outpouring of love and support for our loss. I want to apologize to everyone for being quiet and not answering my phone or emails. To say that it's been a difficult time is an understatement. Thank god for family and friends and having some comfort in knowing that my dear brother has touched so many souls and was loved by many. Although we are all mourning his passing, it's something that he would not have wanted. He would want us to celebrate his ascension to a better place. Frankie was always a leader, never a follower. I have to admit to say that I wish he had taken me with him, that's how much it hurts but he would not have agreed. Frankie was many things to me. He was beyond an inspiration. He was a brother, a mentor, a friend and my king. I am very fortunate to have been able to spend so many incredible moments with him. We travelled the world together. We laughed,, we cried and we danced together so many times. I was introduced to Frankie in 1987 by Judy Weinstein at our office. It was the beginning of a brotherly love. He came to Brooklyn to visit and meet my son Brandon when he was just born. We started along with Judy a company which is now considered one of House Music's brands of our generation DEF MIX. We've mixed and produced many records together. Together we created the "DEF MIX" sound. I can only describe Frankie in one word….EPIC…Frankie had class, finesse. He never raised his voice. He never had to. Frankie had a natural death stare lol. He was an amazing cook. I would go visit him after my set at Red Zone when he was playing at Sound Factory. I would bring him reels of my new productions. When we were together in the booth, you felt it. Frankie was the parent and I was the kid on a leash lol. I have so many fond memories of my brother. I will always cherish them. The "TEARS" will never stop flowing but they will be "TEARS" of joy knowing that he is watching over all of us. He would want us to carry on and that is what we all must do. I will always play a song in his name. HAIL THE TRUE KING OF HOUSE. We will once again dance, cry and laugh together. "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"…FRANKIE KNUCKLES….ENCORE!!!…I LOVE YOU!!
