What Do You Consider Rock or Metal?

There's always debate on what is metal VS rock. Yes some metal is obvious... such as death metal, grindcore, black metal, shock metal etc.

Some people see Van Halen, Motley Crue Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Kiss etc. As metal... others see them as rock. I see them more as rock myself.

Some call Alice In Chains grunge, some call them metal. Some say even a band like Def Leppard is metal lol

What about hair metal? do you really see it as ''metal'' in a classical sense. What do y'all see as heavy metal VS rock?

Rock music paved the way for metal music. I'd like to consider Metal as a rock subgenre, it ain't one, but its obviously influenced by that. Metal bands can be sometimes so theatric and dramatic, which is good, but often they overreact and overproduce their songs to an unbearable point. I hate death metal, it just pisses me off.

At some point in Led Zeppelin's LZ II, I skip many songs because they get so agressive and mad... Like, it just ruins it for me, same goes for Deep Purple's "Deep Purple in Rock" album... I ain't saying metal sucks, but overdoing metal does.

Great question.

I've always looked at it as metal is the type of music that you basically get high or drunk off of (nothing wrong with that of course, as long as you aren't hurting other humans or animals). lol Rock music is the type where you can sing along, dance, shimmy, slither, yell or whatever else you want to do. You can have fun with rock music.....metal is limited IMO. You grab a beer, headbang and chant.

I know that the historians consider Led Zeppelin as one of the earliest hard rock groups in existence, even crediting them with being one of the earlier metal bands but I disagree, I just think of them as just flat out rock or at time "hard rock". They are legendary beasts! I don't consider Guns N' Roses as metal either...always felt they were more rock.

Bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Black Sabbath, IMO are classic metal bands.

Generally if a band became well known prior to 1980, I am more likely to consider them "hard rock" then "metal" unless we're talking Priest and Scorpions.

Not sure where the line is exactly - Pat Travers is hard rock while Ratt is metal, Billy Squier is hard rock while Dokken is metal. Maybe, guys using their own names are likely to be hard rock while bands are likely to be metal? But what about Yngwie? It's complicated!

If they have long hair, leather jackets, chugging riffs, and howling Halfordesque lead vocals, or at least three out of five, then they are metal.

I thought groups like Def Leppard & Ratt were called "glam metal" or "hair metal". Then there was the more hip hop influenced "nu metal". Black Sabbath didn't consider themselves heavy metal and that wasn't even a term when they came out.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Some call Def Leppard ''pop metal'' some glam metal... which too me pop and glam metal can almost be the same thing lol

Its a time thing, for the 70's i think Sabbath and early KISS were metal, at least that is what it was called, to me id say that stuff was just hard rock if even. Later Kiss was pretty much pop/rock.

Aerosmith to me is a hard rock band at times others Rock and then pop/rock, Bon Jovi and Motley could be hard rock at times especially early but then sometimes be straight pop and rock.

To Me there is way to many labels on things, I never got the whole GRUNGE label, to me that was about the "content" of the music and what the artists "wore" it had nothing to do with a sound. To me Nirvana is hard rock, Foo Fighters hard rock/ rock, probably honestly the Foo Fighters are one of the last Rock bands that can still be heard on the radio.

Van Halen again id say probably just Rock, there is alot of "camp" with that band at times, Queen to me early on was harder then got more melodic rock, then at times pop. I think the eras define the wording of things. Hair Metal bands i never understood the term outside of just them having big hair, but then you gotta lump 80's KISS in there and even OZZY who looked like a clown in the mid 80's and later 80's especially, plus he was bloated. I wouldnt call any of the bands from then Metal, to me that term METAL i would leave it for the likes of Slayer and Pantera, bands that just beat the instruments to death while on stage, when it gets more "structured" thats when i just call it "Hard Rock" like an Aerosmith. When it gets really ballady or just very structured like a Bon Jovi or Def Leppard i call it Rock and evven POP/ROCK.

And of course Metallica especially early i would call metal now Hard Rock.

If the music suggest doom on the horizon it is probably metal.

If it suggests a party on the horizon it could be hard rock or it could be hair metal.

Hmm... your assesement is not that bad. The distinction between the two is kinda not that clear cut. I kinda like to call it what Ozzy calls it. He simply calls it heavy rock and lumps it all together. But then I'd say, if it is a more straightforward crunchy, riff based guitar sound it's hard rock and if it's a more polished, distorted, virtuoso guitarsound/work with a wailing singer in a higher register it's Heavy Metal. But at the end of the day, there is no clear line. As you can get both from many bands.

To me, metal is reserved for specific types of music. Metal is rock music set to some extreme. If you take one of rock 'n' roll's more abrasive elements and take it to a far-off limit, it becomes metal.

hard-rock is a subgenre of rock music, title says it all = HARD-rock shrug, both lyrically and sonically

heavy-metal is basically a british genre developed in the early '70s by Black Sabbath (many folks also consider Purple and Zeppelin metal,-more like proto-metal in my opinion) and THEN refined by Judas Priest in the late '70s...

metal found a huge audience in Europe and then in the USA during the whole '80s decade; I don't give a damn if Steppenwolf had that line "heavy metal thunder" in the Born to Be Wild song; heavy-metal was originally british IMO

and then there are the multiple subgenres of metal, of course...

I agree that Sabbath had that HUGE Cream/Hendrix influence, but the lyrics, image, attitude, the tours, etc were already metal

Priest and the NWOBHM bands sure were more metallic than Sabbath, but Sabbath had already paved the way...

"Rock" is a pretty generic term like "pop" or "dance music". It can mean anything. Metal is an offspring of "rock n roll", the same as others like country rock, heartland rock, southern rock, funk rock, soft/light rock, Latin rock, psychedelic rock, horn rock, folk rock, jazz rock/fusion, punk rock, etc. There's also many sub-genres of metal, it isn't one thing or sound. These acts could all be considered "rock":

Bob Seger

Little Richard

Crosby Stills Nash & Young

The Eagles

The Beatles

Styx

Ozzy Osbourne

Elton John

Jimi Hendrix

Rush

Genesis

America

The Cure

Bon Jovi

Chicago

Marshall Tucker Band

The Mamas & The Papas

The Cars

Bread

Eric Clapton

David Bowie

Guns & Roses

ZZ Top

Stevie Ray Vaughn

Yeah. That looks better. I know that Black Sabbath is considered heavy metal, but sorry, none of the Ozzy-era Sabbath albums, the time which laid the ground work for them to be considered heavy metal, spells out heavy metal to me. I'm just not feeling that.

That's what they say about Zeppelin too but as I said before, no parts of Zeppelin are heavy metal at all. Hard rock (at times), yes, but metal...never. Even Jack Black stated something about them being "metal" at the Kennedy Center Honors when Zep was being honored...but the real fans know the real deal. Hell even Led Zep themselves have said that they don't consider their music "heavy metal". So, don't know how they are being looped into that.

As for Black Sabbath, I just said IMO that they were metal, but then again, I'm not really a fan of theirs, so there is room for me to stand corrected.

Its still a tough thing to call because of the different times, again Sabbath back then were Metal if they came out like that now not so sure they would be, a band like Alter Bridge or Three Finger is now what is called metal. Where would Nirvana and Pearl Jam and say Soundgarden fit in there? at times i would just say Rock and at times hard rock, grunge like i said was not a type of music to me, it was a statement about the theme and clothing worn of the artists. Before it became Pearl Jam, it was Mother Love Bone and they were opening for Warrant and had the same audience at times, so Warrant was in that hair metal class, so who knows.

in todays terms i would consider Metal as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Sabbath. All the 80's so called 'Hair Metal' like Whitesnake, Def Leppard and such are Hard Rock, although i would still class Motley Crue as Hair Metal because they've never been anything else, Whitesnake were a Blues rock band to begin with. And now you have many sub genre's. The ones that gets my goat is Grunge, very lazy, all the bands that got lumped in it are all very different. Nirvana are a punk band. Pearl Jam are more classic rock sounding. Alice in Chains were metal ish although now they're more classic rock. Soundgarden are just heavy rock.

Most of what I consider Rock and/or Metal is music performed PREDOMINANTLY but not always by Caucasians with no danceable rhythms or melodic dance beats, features a preponderance of guitar and drum noises.

Rock has more emphasis on singing and melody, but voices are likely to be masculine and deep rather than femmy or pop sounding. Most rock music deals with topics of drinking, love, relationships and partying. It has a hard and heavy sound, but is not devoid of vocals, drums, keyboards and is not dominated by one instrument.

Dancing is not a big part of most rock music but is there, and there is chance for non stringed instruments to shine like saxs, horns, keys and pianos etc. More vocal and dancey beats is pop or dance music.

Most players of rock are from the working class and have lead a hard life and the music is accessible to other working clas people. As a result a lot of rock is worthy of respect as its stripped down and avoids the excesses of some other forms of music. The crass materialism of shit hop is absent amongst rock artists.

I can't comment on musical and note theory as my knowledge of music theory is non existent.

Metal on the other hand is music dominated by loud screeching guitars and frantic drumming, vocals are even turned down or are incomprehensible. It features shrieking and yelling and outlandish stage costumes. Emphasis on gimmicks and to me a real lack of clever musical knowledge. People bone away at guitars and bang drums quickly. A lot of metal is dark in nature and some streams are truly disturbing like death metal and black metal which is even more frantic drumming and growling vocals. I am not the best person to judge as I generally despise metal. Even the more tame forms are devoid of melody and much rhythm, to me Hair and Glam metal is more rock than true metal.

Most metal players are white, although there are glittering exceptions, some death, black and trash metal is racist, homophobic and exclusionary in its focus and in some forms is also apparently satanic and morbid in nature, death metal overwhelms with extreme gothic makeup, corpses, skulls, winged shit and other dark and stupid shit in my eyes. Lyrics can also be sexually explicit and rapine in nature.

Examples of Rock artists/groups: Bruce Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp, George Thoroughgood, The Pretenders, Nickelback, Creed, U2 etc, AC/DC.

Examples of Thrash/Trash metal : Slayer, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Slaughter, Panterra etc

Examples of Black and DEATH metal: Deicide, Sepultura, Crytopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Blitzkreig, Mayhem, Necrophilia etc

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

This post seems a little hateful towards metal. There's homophobia in metal like there is in hip-hop. But not all are like that. And i can name
Dozens of African American performers in metal bands.

This post seems a little hateful towards metal. There homophobia in metal like there is in hip-hop. But not all are like that. And i can me Dozens of African American performers in metal bands. (Wow I thought my grammar and spelling was bad lol)

I don't like shit hop either, its pretty much the lowest form of recorded sound in my eyes, and metal is not far behind it. Most modern (Post 2000) music is just garbage.

But at that same time, scanning all my posts in threads about metal and heavier rock music, I have been abused by metal loving meatheads and if not that rap heads. That comes with the territory, you think on a prince site, you would be respected for your individuality, but no, people who have the hegemonic view that shrieky metal music and drug laden materialistic shit hop is great music hold sway over art and reason.

Yes the asylums have let loose the inmates. I answered the op's question over "What defines metal and rock music" I answered it and was shot down and lambasted by someone who I suspect is much younger and probably has a 2 digit IQ. Well so what, that's my opinion and I WILL NOT APOLOGISE FOR IT!

I know what Metal is, but that does not mean I have to like it. There are selected songs I like yes, but overall my tastes lean towards sung vocal artists, some rock music, accomplished pop artists like Prince and better quality R and B music.

As a proud and educated gay man, there is very little to engender me to the barely audible rubbish that fills up most hip hop and heavy metal/death metal songs and yes it can be homophobic, racist and anti semitic. That is not however the sole reason I don not like this form of music, but it is a large contributing factor towards it, and yes I know there are Jewish, gay, black and Christian rap and metal groups, but they are the extremes rather than the usual all white, all hate filled uneducated long haired drug taking yobbos in metal and over dressed, materialistic, sexist, cretinistic clowns that dominate shit hop music.

RANT OVER, I am what I am!

I used to consider Night Ranger as "hair metal" but then I saw them live and as far as I'm concerned, they are rock and roll.
