Robert Christgau's worst review: Donny Hathaway!

Hold onto your seat, this will hurt:

"Donny Hathaway [Atco, 1971]
Jerry Wexler and Atlantic, who would seem to know more about this sort of thing than I do, are pushing this refugee from the production booth as the Man Who Will Revitalize Soul Music. Could be, as I say, but if having soul means digging on all this supper-club melodrama and homogenized jazz then I'm content to be sterile, square, and white. Yeah yeah yeah. D-"

Wow, shocked me when I first read it. Sure, the songs are not all great but Hathaway was one of our greatest singers, at least I think so. Damn Robert.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Actually, Chrstgau was a big fan of r&b- he once wrote an article saying 2 of 3 greatest artists of the 1970s were Al Green and P-Funk (the third was Neil Young). It just seems he had a bug up his butt about Donny H for some reason
